Yes, he had somewhere else to go, but he decided not to go back there. He burned the bridge and diidn't want to go back there. This is a vey important lesson for me. I have seen this movie at least 50 times and every time I learn something different.
An astonishingly powerful moment in a memorable movie. This film has its clunky passages -both Gere and Gosset chew the scenery here and there. But this scene is remarkable;always gets to me.Not just the cry of a desperate man, but a picture of the desperation of so many men. Gere nails this segment perfectly. (I like this scene bec. it reminds me that, on a certain level, everyone has this cry deep within them; Augustine said: "My heart is restless, till it finds its rest in Thee, O God.")
I just love this scene. The classic USMC DI has a classic bleeding heart liberal moment and gives the benefit of the doubt to a sorry shitbird who doesn't deserve it. Only in the movies.
I like the comments man!I am the daughter of a marine too!But he never laugh about this scene !!!Don`t....You ...Do.... It!Don`t!!!....You!!!jajaja!!!
Lol @The1994Gforce. I HAD to look it up! It would have bugged the hell out of me if I didn't. I do that with a lot quotes i hear that are taken from movies/songs, look them up online or on YouTube.
Foley breaking Mayo has to be one of the most poignant bits of acting ever. There are a lot of good ones, but for whatever reason, this one always sticks in my head.
best scene in the movie. Gere has to be pushed by a supporting cast because his incredible looks are too easy to lean on. Put him next to a really good actor his competitiveness comes out. In this scene he is so stripped down to raw emotion his looks become completely invisible to even himself. That is why Gossett received that little gold man. he brought that out of him. And the scene is the best acted scene in the film. Love this movie.
@pjzzxxyy the ending was the best feel good scene ...but best acted scene is this one...Gossett pushed that out of Gere... like Newman could push a better scene out of Redford... Those real handsome actors..have a hard time getting past the exterior...it takes competition from a better male lead actor...to push them to perform at their very best.
@cdee12120 And Gossett said he had a hard time doing the scenes with authenticity hanging around the cast.He distanced himself from them until the filming was over and was therefore better able to get into character.
i hope i live life like this w christ....no place else to go

It's actually "dropped on request". Not "dismissed" or whatever else I've read.
And the movie is "An Officer and a Gentleman." Some of the facts are off, but easily a top ten Navy-based movie of all-time.
