stupid west people. Every day they eat hamburgers(Made of meat of cows) and spill sentimental tears looking similar videos. I saw video called "shocking asia". in that movie some westerners have gobbled up brains still a live monkey. and if Russians kill one dog in the research purposes - it mean they are heartless
ahhh, don't like it? go fuck a dog you morons! think they did this because they were sadists? it was done to help save HUMAN lives, which are infinitely more valued than dogs. don't think so? you just committed a value judgement asshole. demonstrate to the rest of us how an animal shows transcedence.
Laika, tu ti fidavi degli uomini che ti avevano raccolta dalla strada. Ecco come hanno ripagato la tua fiducia. abbandonandoti nello spazio. Riposa in pace Laika.
why do you all blame russians for this? look at NASA's space experiments in where tons of monkeys died in space, and if they got brought back alive, they were dissected and experimented on. They dont put up any honours for them, but russians did and they told the truth!
I know she gave her life to the advancement of astronomy but I still get a little wet-eyed when I see photos and videos of her. I just want to cuddle the little girl.
I visited the Space Museum when I was in Moscow. Belka and Strelka (meaning "Squirrel and "Arrow") are stuffed and displayed next to a satellite. Sputnik 2 is there with not so much as a heroic statue.
Yes, it's awful that any creature great or small should ever come to harm. However, Laika's life was more than just a sad end, she proved that humans could survive the cold reaches of space, and paved way for the entirity of human spaceflight.
When much else of our time is forgotten, Laika will be remembered.
I'm curios whether can be be persuaded some human beings especially some bombers, to sacrifice themselves for humanity as Laike and others animals did. Of course I mean sacrifice without any money or other benefits in reward.
I don't get why you would call this horrific it was a sacrifice made for the good of humanity. look at how many new technological advances were made to this day and still occurring at an exponential rate. Laika will always be remembered, as the first organism to be able to reach space dead or alive (as well as other animals). Laika was a stray dog and now it is a hero of Russian airspace. In comparison to the many animals that are suffering extinction and other issues is by far worse.
so laika was the first living being to escape planet earth. Aliens will see dogs as superior beings to humans? Dogs rulled planet earth? Is Laika still up there then????
In Memory of Laika's suffering we SHOULD ALL UNITE in yearly massive Spaying and Neutering Campaigns..Campaigns that will Prevent the suffering of countless UNWANTED creatures...
That stray would of died in the street. Hit by a car, attacked by animals, contract an illness.... If I where some stray dog, I would rather die in the name of science for millions to remeber by name, and be an important part of history, than die in some ally and be forgotten....
@Ecardz Well if you were a dog, you wouldn't give a... bone... about science, or the memories of millions - let alone the space race, the cold war and the ideological reasons used to justify repression and brainwashing propanganda, in both sides. Animals are not that stupid.
LIVE LAIKA FOR EVER...
@scottmcg666 says "Unlike NASA in the 50's + 60's who dissected every animal (including monkeys) lucky enough to survive the trip home."
Not exactly true. Miss Baker flew in 1959 & died in 1984, having lived at the US Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville Alabama. I saw her many times when visiting the center.
Ham the Chimp flew in 1961 & died in 1983, having lived at the National Zoo in Washington DC.
It's sad because all living creatures deserve to live ... The same Cold War space race to build ICBM's that killed Laika -- was used to target Russian and American cities full of innocent humans too. People say "Laika was only a dog" but remember that our politics would have just as thoughtlessly murdered millions of humans too. And even if you defend her death with "the progress of Science" bluff -- Science would have been better and more humanely served TRYING to bring Laika back ALIVE!
So many animals have been sacrificed, not just Laika. The Soviets so much bad press from Laika's death every future Soviet space critter was given hero status. The next space dog, Strelka, was bred and one of her pups given to Caroline Kennedy... the only Russian space monkey returned alive and was given to Castro as his personal pet. Unlike NASA in the 50's + 60's who dissected every animal (including monkeys) lucky enough to survive the trip home.
@RumlinV@scottmcg666 because what he's told you is wrong. For example Ham, the first hominid launched into outer space survived 17 years after his mission.
@virusdapimp They were both random strays, as were all Russian space dogs. Strelka was bred as in she did some breeding and gave birth to a litter of pups. The Russians only used stray female dogs. Stray dogs don't have personality issues of spoiled housepets and cope better with stress. Female dogs don't lift their leg to pee so it's easier to contain in the weightless environment.
Laika died about 5 hrs after launch. There was a malfunction, her capsula didn't detach from the R-7 rocket. The air conditioning system was projected to be started by capslua separation, so it didn't start and Laika died because of overheat.
The life supporting system was able to keep her alive for more than 2 weeks. And also, there was food and water for this time. The system was made to kill her quickly by zero oxygen level, as soon as all oxygen will be used.
- Laika was launched into space on Sputnik 2, Nov 3rd 1957 and died between five and seven hours into the flight from stress and overheating. Her true cause of death was not made public until October 2002; officials previously gave reports that she died when the oxygen supply ran out.
Sputnik 2 was not designed to be retrievable, and Laika had always been intended to die. Enough food was provided for a seven-day flight and had planned to euthanize Laika with a poisoned serving of food on the final day.
Before the launch, one of the scientists (Dr. Vladimir Yazdovsky) took Laika home to play with his children. He said, "I wanted to do something nice for her: She had so little time left to live."
@RumlinV oficially means for you "we are in cold war so we need to act as cool as we can because the yankees are our enemy and we must pretend we beated them with this dog", right?
@RumlinV No days. Laika died after 5 hours about. Because of the overheat. The separation from the last rocket stage failed, the air conditioning which was projected to start by the separation didn't start and Laika did overheat.
