Capitalism is not about making somthing out of your life. Capitalism is about letting money do the regulation of all things including the ones that should better be judged by morale. Making something out of your life includes becoming wise, achieving goals compatible with social restraints and acting in an economic way. And I run my business pretty fine with that but making money is not the only objective I have whereas capitalism has no other objectives.
@malanga13 Actually, it was nothing. The boat was designed to do that, and in much heavier seas than that. As someone who sails, it would be awesome to crew on that boat.
It is so sad to see what has happened to the America's Cup. Who allowed this to happen? I believe Larry Elison prostituted the Cup .Multihulls should be placed in an entirely separate regatta. Impressive engineering but Dennis is still my hero
@freak4freedom DC was the first person to bring a multihull into the America's Cup, remember. Times change, technology changes, and Oracle is doing a splendid job trying to build the AC up instead of tearing it down like Alinghi before AC33.
Regarding complaints that the Cup is too much about engineering, I would ask that everyone reviewed the Cup's history.
At the time of the first race, British naval architects believed that a blunt bow "pushed" the water out of the way. The yacht America (the Cup is named after the first winner, not the country) was superior in its design. The America's cup is about the best team (e.g. designers, crew, infrastructure, etc.), not just the best crew. For a pure battle of skill, watch one-design.
I have been sailing for decades and I can't even tell you who is competing against whom for the Americas Cup. Since the US has lost interest, maybe its time to rename it the European Cup and they can keep it. After all, thats what we did to the Brits. We sailed over to the Isle of Wright, beat their ass and took the Cup home and renamed it. We had it for what? A hundred years or so? Let the Eurotrash play with it for a while.
Don't you get it? Speed is everything. And money increases the speed. The space shuttle is 60's technology. Imagine if private competition were unleashed in space exploration. We'd have colonies on mars by now. That's my view: take it or leave it.
@utopiandesign We do have private competition in space travel, it's called capitalism; there's quite a killing to be made in short flights into orbit, and several companies already have customers booked for trips in the near future. There's not much payoff in going to mars though =(
this is desperate and sad. Holy shit? is that american for 'we changed the rules to win something back by having more money than anyone else to throw at it??? this is nothing to do with the Americas Cup. The spectacle of Americas Cup match racing is the challenge and I refer to Australia 2 in 1983. Defeating the best on their home patch against all the odds. Win it back not buy it back!!!!
@philinthesouth haha agreed, but with a published rule book and a decent amount of funding, what team in their right mind would IGNORE the race-winning design?
No one.
Times have changed, that's all there is to it.
Having said that, I'm proud that the USA has once again introduced one-design AC45 / AC72 specs for the 34's America's Cup Series and Challenge.
I agree with robs dad. To make it relevant again and popular again, lets make it a common design and the best sailors from each country. I know. I am radical. This stuff happens off some coast somewhere a couple of times each decade and only millionairs get to see it. You shouldn't have to be a billionaire to be in this . . .
It is funny how this is not broadcast in the US. A real sport. Shows how stupid American is with the beer drinking networkcentric marketgeering stuperbowl bullshit.
@dspqpsk you know why it's not broadcast in the US?
It's an elitist sport played by billionaires and millionaires for other billionaires and millionaires.
The America's Cup lost touch with the regular audience a long time ago. It will take even longer for it to regain any of its status as a sports event that matters.
@dspqpsk I do remember when the America's Cup was a big deal in the US, back when you needed strategy and skill to win a race. I don't think it's been a real sport for quite a few years now, so nobody cares. Yes, they are amazing boats, but there is almost no real competition. So where is this a big deal?
@dspqpsk -That's Corporate America, Us Yank's that have heads on our shoulders would love the sports coverage everyone else has outside the States...... Hell, Our networks don't even show home grown racing events on our own soil more then half the time...... Shove Nascar, I'd like to subside the life size slot car track to see some real racing!
@dspqpsk youre right..Tv networks should just show stuff on tv that would fail. i mean thats what business is all about right. doing what ppl dont want. yeah that tends to make you lots of money. this isnt popular here, although it is cool, so why would they show it...dont start a business, pretty sure youd fail.
@heinrich97 yeah its pretty retarded being able to own and opperate your own business, make your own money, and carve out a place in society for yourself, and actually do something you can be proud of. i can see why all that would be wrong...so wrong. i mean, we should all just be able to stay at home and smoke a bunch of pot n be slobs with no ambission or no goals and no desire to make anything out of ones life.
my buddy worked for the company that built the boat and was on the team that worked on the mast, said it was the coolest job he has ever and probably will ever have. heh heh, go Oracle!
When and where was this filmed? The cameraman mentioned that Alinghi had a chase boat following BMW Oracle. Odd that Alinghi could see how fast the trimaran went and still challenged it with soft sails in race one sometime later.
Dear Gents we still have 2 regatta to go and the sea always give you a chance.
Surely the silly man choose the wrong way to challenge the US ( considering they got the best IT and surely a heavy wallet too ) and moreover we can't enjoy to see the AUS, NZ, UK, and all the other gents that " are " the sailing art. I'm Swiss and the best will win , but i'm so sad to think about the fact that this is all but sailing, but America' s Cup is a Sailor 's challenges and nothing else
What a muppet!!Alinghi beat NZ for the cup in the last true Americas Cup before it got bastardised by Ernesto Bertarelli...Shame shame shame on Alinghi.Ruined the cup and now BMW going to ruin them on the water
Way cool to built such a high tech sail and craft. The comments here regarding the politics of the AC are a little harsh. I am a New Zealander too. I also find the competition to be a little over the top now. And indeed if turns out to be ego vs ego, then the only joy one can take is to root for the men who actually do the sailing. But still, it is only man vs man if the boats are the same! Fuck the rich bastards and the courts who love their money.
Awsome display of nautical speed! I am impressed. But someday it would good to see an AC regatta that's affordable for more participants, and in a windy, big wave venue. Maybe even a return to 12 meter yachts for one event.
For a short golden period this event was about country versus country. Now it's about ego versus ego. I'm a Kiwi, it's sad to see that my countrymen are leading both syndicates. Perhaps we really are the barbarians of the modern world. We will fight for anyone who pays us enough. Please get back to a contest between iron men on wooden boats (OK carbon reinforced) rather than billionaires on space craft. Get back to team and skill rather than who has the biggest wallet. Still awesome technology!
@TheRobsDad If you want country vs country, watch rugby... surely the point of this is pushing the boundries of technology as much as a national competition
I agree about the nationality issue.. but you have to admit that this wasn't about "skill" from the moment it was conceived. From race number one it was all about the equipment. Sure you had to have the skill to handle that equipment but no one was under any illusion that it wasn't the design of the craft that gave it it's potential speed.
@seanomatopoeia A couple of months ago I saw Camper, a new Volvo mono hull smoking past a coastal tanker on the Hauraki Gulf. It had a code zero head sail that nearly stretched back to the stern. Quicker than 20 knots easy. Let me float the idea of a modern J-Class with a Canty Keel. Big size, massive sails (think of the billboard space for advertisers) awesome speed. But they would be completely in keeping with the traditions of the cup. Billionaires could really show who's is biggest!
I used to be a Alinghi fan when they won their first cup... but now.. they completely fucked up the ACC... Assholes! Btw the BOR is way more impressive compared to their cat.. GO BMW, kick some ass Larry!

But shame on the TV from switzerland, who didn't show it!!
Hope you make the rules back, before this AC.
The America's cup must be sailed in the traditional AC Boats!! And on a Place, where's more Wind than Valencia.
It can't be, that in an AC one Race coundn't start because of not enough wind!
