I know how he did it. Year's of practice, and an 'ear' for perfection. In his heard, he knows what he wants to hear. Then, he 'sticks with it,' until he can play it!
You are great Martin. I wish I had just a little bit of your talent. I play a lot every day, it's still a learning process. It is getting somewhat easier, after 5 years. I'm my own worst critic, everyone tells me. I'm just trying to be my best.
Unbelievable... the dobro is my favorite sounding instrument. I would love to use this instrument in my production. Thanks for mastering this instrument for us Martin!
Beautiful dobro slide rendition of this New Year's classic! But Jerry Douglas still rules, hands down, in my book (and most other dobro fanatics books, I'm sure!). Still, beautiful rendition & really well executed! Keep at it! Hank C...
Well, nothing! But in case you didn't know it, Jerry is the greatest dobro player there is (and have been so for several years now) and that was what I was getting at, a comparison in other words, OK? Hank C...
I'm well aware who JD is. I happen to live close to where he is from and I've probably been listening to him before you knew who he was. I agree he's the best, but this guy is a great player too. Besides, comparing players is just a matter of opinion. Great players are great, after that, it's personal preference.
Right, personal preference..end of story! But if you have been as long as I have in this crazy world of music (which you havn't, by a long shot! You wasn't even a glimpse in your dad's eye when I fronted my first band!!), it's quite natural to compare players doing their thing in the same type of category & that's where I think J.D. is OUTSTANDING, personal preference or not! But this, mind you, doesn't mean that I don't think Martin Gross is AWESOME, cause he IS! 'Nuff said. Hank C...
I'm 45, so, I doubt you were frontng your first band while I was a glimse in my dad's eyes. I've also been playing stringed instruments since I was 5. I highly doubt you've been playing for a lot more than 40 years. All I'm saying is, why do people have to always make comparisons to other players when they are both great? It doesn't matter. What you think is great is your opinion; it doesn't make it fact.
Sorry to disappoint you, but I fronted my first band in '58, at the age of 13, cut my 1st record in '60, my 2nd in '66 (on the US Blue Horizon label), had my 1st Cashbox hit in '69, am the only European that's had a record on the legendary SUN label, had an 8 million Hit seller in '76 on the UK Sonet label, has been voted Scandinavia's Greatest Rock'n Roll Artist more years in a row than I can remember, plays every instrument (& sings) on all my 94 records myself & am STILL at it!! Hank C..
Why would I be dissapointed? I was going on statistics. Not many people have been playing as long as you and you're to be commended for it. I didn't know Sun ever had European artists on their label. Would you mind telling me the song and year? Was it when Sam Philips owned it?
I know what you're getting at and this time I'm going to disappoint myself. Nope, my SUN experience came after Shelby Singleton had bought the label & he released an entire album by me pressed in gold vinyl (on the SUN label) in early '77 called "Don't Mess With My Ducktail", incl. the 8 million copies hit instru "Spinnin' Rock Boogie". Not exactly the 'real deal' then, grant you, but close enough for comfort! I knew Sam's brother Tom very well though, but that's another story!
Hey, there's nothing wrong with that. I was just curious because I have a pretty good knowledge of Sun as my mom was a walking music library for that era. I interned as a sound engineer at Ardent Studios in Memphis. While there I helped install a recording console for Knox Phillips around the corner from Sun studios. I can't remember the name of the studio, but a ton of R&B hits came form that complex. My mom passed away and left me a massive record collection. I bet yours is among them.
HOLY SMACK! Now you caught me totally off guard in envy! The stories alone that you could tell would probably be worth a fortune for any publisher! That area is the holy grail of Rock'n Roll, R&B and what have you! I'd given my right arm to change places with you! Ardent Studios, huh?! Could the Knox Phillips complex have been Stax? Incidentally, I bought tons of original SUN singles from Tom Phillips Select-O-Hits for 9 cents each in the late '60s!! Heck, this was truly awesome!! Hank...
I do believe it was Stax where I met Knox. He was a very nice person and a pleasure to be around. John Fry offered me a job at Ardent after my internship, but I came back to Florida to be with a lady that didn't last. Hindsight is tough sometimes. I have a lot of Sun Jerry Lee singles that my mom purchased form the Sun vaults back in the 80's that have never been played. I wish I could have bought some of the first records Elvis was selling out of his trunk for 25 cents, but who knew?
Wow... I love this!!!!!!!!!!

Absolutely the best. Everything to perfection. You are to the slide guitar what Earl Scruggs is to the five string banjo.
