I like Ozzy's lyrics a lot because I can understand them all the time, even if I'm drunk or sleepy. My nine-year-old niece can understand them too. Now she can even write like that and she could sing Ozzy's songs when she was five. But I don't get Plant's lines all the time and he fucking changes them and they don't mean the same. And my niece can't sing those songs. Yeah, definitely, I love Black Sabbath and I hate those arrogant Led Zeppelin.

Iommi flourished with other singers and solos while Page did not. Iommi is without doubt the GOD of riffs. let's put it like this, Black Sabbath was heavy metal and Led Zeppelin was hard rock. Jimmy Page was more technical as a guitarist, however Tony's riffs were so dark and unheard. Page's voice inspired so many upcoming singers in the 70's and it was loud and soaring, Ozzy's voice was dark and kind of creepy but he could "soar" as well. Sabbath's bass was louder and better IMO and the drums are equally awesome.
Sabbath were metal, while Zeppelin played heavy yet bluesy rock n roll. I tip my hat to Zeppelin, though. Plant blows Ozzy away as far as singing, Page is a superior guitarist over Iommi, I'd give the nod as the better bassist to Geezer, but John Bonham was leaps and bounds better than Bill Ward. I love both bands about equally, but prefer Zeppelin.
I think it was Scott Ian that said both are hugely influential. Led Zeppelin greatly influenced good time, hard rock and arena rock. Sabbath gave birth to heavy metal. Just about every rock band since borrows from either Led's arena rock style, or Sabbath's doom and gloom metal thunder. They're like the darkness and the light. The heaven and the hell of rock music. Sabbath sounded different, it was refreshing at that time. individually invented a whole new genre. inspired generations of bands. in my honest opinion, sabbath were 100 times more influential than zep. and clearly is the better band overall.

Over 40 years later they are still possibly the most influential hard rock/heavy group in history. Tony Iommi's riffs and tone were totally new and original. Geezer's lyrics were ahead of their time, honest and brutally true. Like I said, I love Zeppelin, but Sabbath were true innovators.

I'd say that overall LZ are the better band, i get that LZ didn't change Rock in a huge way, in many a way, some of their numbers defined compositions of rock music.

@doodleguitarist, I'm not so sure that's entirely true, considering Sabbath and Zeppelin both got their start around the same time. I'd say they both owe a certain debt to Cream, although both went far beyond Cream in aggressiveness. Sabbath went far beyond Zep in that respect. Also, let's not forget Blue Cheer. Their first album, "Vincebus Eruptum", was like nothing that came before it. Quite groundbreaking.

Black Sabbath had some ups and downs and that was bad for them, while Zeppeling stood consistent on their time. Bu I say Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin are at the same spot. Both are at the best of their genres. Zep are at the top of rock and Sabbath at the top of metal.

Black Sabbath is the absolute best. Led and Sabbath are my two all time favorite bands, but Led is not but a footnote in what Sabbath did. Led was original and awesome, but there were other bands like them at the time. Black Sabbath fucking made an entire genre. Would heavy metal, doom metal, thrash metal, any metal exist without Black Sabbath?? No. Not in the same way at least. Led Zep was influential, but like Sabbath. Lyrically and musical Sabbath completely dominates Led. Sorry folks.

Zeppelin and Sabbath....both fantastic bands. Both responsible for the birth of metal in two separate facets. Zeppelin more of the arena style, Sabbath the sledgehammer, doom and gloom style which is more closely associated with true heavy metal. Deep Purple are also responsible, but you didn't ask about them did you. We're talking about Zeppelin and Sabbath. So yeah, love 'em both. (BUT for me personally, I've always been a bigger fan of Zep, in junior high they were 2nd to The Beatles).

I like Sabbath a little. They had a really good run with those first 2 albums. But let's just say for a second that Sabbath recorded Dazed & Confused. That was recorded in Aug'68. That song is heavy and dark. Zep did it, but again, let's all pretend that Sabbath did it. Ready? They recorded it for their entire run. Boring. Zep was louder, harder and heavier in the beginning. Yes, that same band that did Stairway and Going to California. They were far more creative and grew up as they went along.

The whole argument is absolute bullshit. People don't want to credit Zeppelin because they started mixing it up after the first two records, whereas Sabbath stayed on one path with their style. Sabbath is the first true metal band. While bands before them played loud guitars, drums, and vocals, Sabbath was the first to darken their music on purpose, thus creating the blue print for all metal bands to follow.

@mentalfeed70, I'll say it again. Sabbath created an entirely new sound. Nobody before them sounded like they did. Over 40 years later they are still possibly the most influential hard rock/heavy group in history. Tony Iommi's riffs and tone were totally new and original. Geezer's lyrics were ahead of their time, honest and brutally true. Like I said, I love Zeppelin, but Sabbath were true innovators.

@TIMOTHYSAARINEN yh, but Led Zepp were innovative and original, just like Sabbath, they created a new sound, that sound that can't be replicated by any other. LZ in their early years were called vile, in-decent, inappropriate, weird and not what music should be.
I'd say that overall LZ are the better band, i get that LZ didn't change Rock in a huge way, in many a way, some of their numbers defined compositions of rock music.
just using stairway as an example, that song changed the world!

@doodleguitarist, I'm not so sure that's entirely true, considering Sabbath and Zeppelin both got their start around the same time. I'd say they both owe a certain debt to Cream, although both went far beyond Cream in aggressiveness. Sabbath went far beyond Zep in that respect. Also, let's not forget Blue Cheer. Their first album, "Vincebus Eruptum", was like nothing that came before it. Quite groundbreaking.

@mattyblues101 Don't break the bands down for comparison. Don't compare the individuals to compare the band, that's wrong, specially when Sabbath changed so many members. In my opinion: Dio > Plant > Ozzy.
Black Sabbath had some ups and downs and that was bad for them, while Zeppeling stood consistent on their time. Bu I say Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin are at the same spot. Both are at the best of their genres. Zep are at the top of rock and Sabbath at the top of metal.

Black Sabbath is the absolute best. Led and Sabbath are my two all time favorite bands, but Led is not but a footnote in what Sabbath did. Led was original and awesome, but there were other bands like them at the time. Black Sabbath fucking made an entire genre. Would heavy metal, doom metal, thrash metal, any metal exist without Black Sabbath?? No. Not in the same way at least. Led Zep was influential, but like Sabbath. Lyrically and musical Sabbath completely dominates Led. Sorry folks.

@Cerpth Now I ask you, have you ever listened to all Black Sabbath's songs?, for me doesn't matter if Zeppelin has the best guitar player, or the best drummer, Zeppelin has other style that for me sucks,(make me fall sleep) you can't compare Jones and Plant with Bultler bass or Iommi guitar, Sabbath are not a convencional band, they don't play convencional music, they don't play "rock", they discover heavy metal, so thats why i think Black Sabbath is better

Zeppelin and Sabbath....both fantastic bands. Both responsible for the birth of metal in two separate facets. Zeppelin more of the arena style, Sabbath the sledgehammer, doom and gloom style which is more closely associated with true heavy metal. Deep Purple are also responsible, but you didn't ask about them did you. We're talking about Zeppelin and Sabbath. So yeah, love 'em both. (BUT for me personally, I've always been a bigger fan of Zep, in junior high they were 2nd to The Beatles).

I like Sabbath a little. They had a really good run with those first 2 albums. But let's just say for a second that Sabbath recorded Dazed & Confused. That was recorded in Aug'68. That song is heavy and dark. Zep did it, but again, let's all pretend that Sabbath did it. Ready? They recorded it for their entire run. Boring. Zep was louder, harder and heavier in the beginning. Yes, that same band that did Stairway and Going to California. They were far more creative and grew up as they went along.

The whole argument is absolute bullshit. People don't want to credit Zeppelin because they started mixing it up after the first two records, whereas Sabbath stayed on one path with their style. If there's anyone who invented HARD ROCK it's Free! Look at Free and their descendants....Bad Company and Foreigner! That to me, is Hard Rock. Just SORTA heavy but not all the way there. And let's not forget Robert Plant INVENTED the heavy metal scream. But Sabbath was a heavier band.

Sabbath is the first true metal band. While bands before them played loud guitars, drums, and vocals, Sabbath was the first to darken their music on purpose, thus creating the blue print for all metal bands to follow.
