We've been fly fishing for years... I love how some comment on how "bad" this guy is at tying. If you are so good at tying flies then why are you looking at a video that explains how to tie them?
its not about being sloppy....you can tie fly's the way you want theres no right or wrong....I use the the wooly bugger that he ties in the video and it is very effective...and im sure the way you tie yours is good to.
Dont "tie in" the lead. before you start the thread wrap the lead on in smooth touching turns. Then start your thread and secure the lead onto the shank with crossing turns.
It is just as malleable as the stuff he used in the video. I think it should be fine. Also solder now a days does not contain any lead. So it would be a more environmentally friendly solution :)
That's one way around here fish them like that only in faster water
but in the lakes we fish them just below the surface and twitch them occasionally .

Tie on the tail first, then the lead. You get a more even body. This guy was pretty sloppy tyer.
