Hey the guy is just having fun. No need to make it to specs if he doesn't intend to actually race it in competition. I've built up 3 of these things and they are a cheap alternative to an ATV for riding around. For really fast speeds it's hard to get the steering stable. My last build was a Craftsman with an Enduro 17 HP. I used a 6 1/2 pulley on the engine and a 3" on the tranny. That one, which was the best I had would run every bit of 60 MPH down the road and handle good. My new one needswork
you should get a bigger front pulley i have a 10-/+ inch up front and a 5 inch out back with a 3 spd it does about 30 ish and still has enough power to pull the wheel up in second if i could keep the belt from slipping i could pull it up in 3rd but just an idea
What size of pulley u runnin on the back? I'm runnin stock pulley up front and a 3 1/4 on the back with chrome exausts XD have fun man. Please reply :)
hey quit with the negativity.. besides that is clearly a sanctioned mower built to all his clubs strict rules and hes runnin on a well built track... lol jk
so wut is the smallest pully anyone would recommend for the back? i got a mower with wut looks like a 10 inch on the back and a 3 1/2 in the front how do i go about getting max speed from the thing? (15.5 hp)
@FeatherHead308 Is all you can do is say NOTHING EVEN CLOSE TO A REAL RACE MOWER. Maybe people don't have 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 to put into a fucking lawn mower. Some people like to spend their money on other things (non like you)
@FeatherHead308 not everyone can afford to do all the modifications nessesary to make a full on racing mower, he is just having some back yard fun, leave him alone. what could be more fun than pulling an old mower out of your shed at making it go faster for only a few bucks?
@pyroboy08 Agreed, I have a completely stock craftsman lt1000 that i take mudbogging cuz i have more important things like a truck to keep running. I still have a blast with it too..
mr robot305 : an hydrostatic trany is a hydrolic pump system. more you're giving gaz more the mower will go. btw that kind of trany is the most tough and reliable. they used it in bobcat, kubota and every kind of hd thing. so that couldn't do a good racing trany. btw good luck
actually you can.. here's how, ive done it. get the ass end of mower off the ground, pull all of the hydrostatic drive shit out, including the shifter. now find yourself a 4-5 or 6 speed transaxle (its a rear axle and tranny in 1) and make yourself a couple of these L shaped brackets. now there's will be 4 holes on each side of the transaxle, 2 big ones and 2 small ones, take the brackets, mark the width for the big holes, drill them out and bolt them onto ur transaxle.
Cont'd- Then put your trans on a floor jack under the mower, lift up until the top of pulley on trans is level with the top of pulley on the engine, you can also level it from both bottoms of pulley's and centre in the frame.mark your holes on the frame and drill 2 holes on each side, if your worried about it falling or something you can drill 4 holes on each side..
this method i have found to be a very easy way to mount a transaxle. also the pulley off the trans and put a 3 inch on it.
also if you want check out my Ford racing mower video, i explain it in there. oh by the way i race mowers and have tested the way of mounting a transaxle and it aint gonna fall out.. trust me i've beat my ford mower to shit and no problems other than a couple gears in the transaxle from driver error. oh and the shifter will now be in the front, so you'll have to cut a "slot" in the front of the rear fender so you can shift.
Well, basically, a hydro is built to spin at what it is geared at stock. You can gear them up, and it will turn faster, but only for a short space of time, as it will damage them badly.
If you were to perhaps run a big sprocket from the hydro axles to a small one with the wheel on it on separate axles it could well work.
A manual on the other hand is simple. It'll require a few mods to make it last longer, like proper gear oil/drain plug/breather. But its more reliable and easier to do.
nice build man, im workin on one my self , all of us rednecks are proud to be one so give this a thumbs up

how would u make a hydrostatic lawnmower in to a racing mower cause i just fixed mine and it goes maybe 5 mph
bansheekid101 2 years ago
its basically impossible to make hydrostatic lawn tractors into racers. the gearing in them is wrong. u would need to install a non hydrostatic trany
sandblasterboy 2 years ago
i dont no if u can, ive never heard of it being done

@metalguitar1011 he cant go much faster in that small of space with out more flip risk. i run a briggs opposed twin lots of torque and power.

You mean auto (hyrdostatic) or manual. It's a manual though (:

Im concerned on wats the difficulty of turning a hydrostatic lawn mower into a racing lawnmower compared to turning a manual into one
