I've played through this game probably 8-10 times since it came out, and the whole time I always brought blue potions to this boss and thought the rods exclusively did damage to the colored heads. I had no idea they are vulnerable to the sword when hit with the proper element...
@Nirvana32058 Its head is only vulnerable from the time it leaves the exploding shell to the time its middle section starts flashing, at which point that's vulnerable instead.
@Desbreko Oh I see what you mean. After 10 years of playing A Link to the Past, I never knew you can do that. I was sure I knew all the tricks. Thanks for insight!

I could have but it wouldn't have mattered. You can't bring up the item screen while a head is dying so I had to wait before I could switch to the Fire Rod. I paused and switched as soon as possible, at which point I was already next to the Ice Head.
I suppose I could've optimized things a bit more by stunning the Fire Head, swapping to the Fire Rod, then killing the Fire Head and immediately moving behind the Ice Head to stun and kill it.

Last time I remember you were only able to kill trinexx by hitting his colored body scales and not the head.
