Premier around this time wasn't a bad brand, and it was one of the first to adapt to kevlar heads with out having the shell collapse. Nowadays it's not the same thing.
"I DON'T LIKE IT,TOO MUCH stuff going on,JUST DRUM all the extra stuff is stupid!" ok now if I was some young kid nowadays this is the type of comment you'd see, here is my honest opinion this stuff is great lot of great sounds, loved this whole total Percussion Ensemble, pit had it going on as well, loved them set up on the field.Lots of great NEW Percussion sounds that had not been heard in percussion introduced to DCI this year If you were in this line all I can say is outFUCKINstanding
Loved the rich sound with the black bass heads and Pearl drums circa '88?- '91. the cool thing about the premier line where the "free-floating tenors (quints) Now so many corps use Dynasty....whatever though, it's the talented musicians that make them sound great. When I marched corps in '94 we listened to the judges tape and he complained that our snares were cranked too high and sounded, quote, like woody woodpecker...we had to laugh
I don't understand why Phantom can't just stick with one drum company.... They went from Pearl to Premier, back to Pearl, now to Dynasty. What's the point? They've won high drums with Pearl drums...
@jadebrew they went w/ dynasty when they first came out because they wanted to be on the cutting edge w/ this new company that had a distinctive look/sound. what they didnt realize was that the quality of manufacturing on anything dynasty produced (brass, drums, keyboards) left much to be desired, but they were bound into a 10 year contract. once that expired at the end of '09, they went to pearl/adams, a brand of much higher consistency of quality
I think this is one of the most innovative percussion books I've ever heard. I love the choice of instrumentation, etc. I began playing drums in 1993 after watching this show. Absolutely awesome!
Ok, the camera person blows. There needs to be a warning...DO NOT WATCH WITHOUT MOTION SICKNESS PILLS. And, Jeff looks like he escaped from that 80's hair band "FLOCK OF SEAGULLS." But, this was the last Phantom Drumline I really followed. I always loved the Marty Hurley Phantom. And, I love what Jeff did on this '93 year.
Anyone ever notice how pretty much no one uses Premier drums anymore? It just to be the Dynasty in the 80's and early 90's. Wonder what happened to that brand that it lost all it's ensembles...?
Premier drums had a tendency simply fall apart during play. We used them at the university of Cincinnati. Premier actually created the first free-floating snare drum, but Yamaha engineered a much better product. To this day, I can't imagine why anyone desires Dynasty. Before Scott Johnson made that deal for BD no one used them!
My university drumline had a better experience with Premier drums, after using the same set for 10 years they were still in good shape. I agree with you about Dynasty though. It's hard to believe so few corps use Pearl now. I don't think you can get better sounding drums.
Dont get me wrong, Paul Rennick did a great job with this line. I miss the sounds that Prosperie created, there was just so much to listen to, and I didnt even realize that the battery was doing all of this.
Jason White was the last tenors name, which was me.
With the exception of all the extra sectionals I caused early on, I was pretty forgettable ;), since I was pretty much trying to hide from the wrath of Patrick, the tenor tech. He was great though, as long as he wasn't calling me out ;)
TEX!! Sorry man, I'm a spaced out. I found Rick on Facebook....and there's a FB page for N.A.A.T.D. alums...check it out. Don't know what Flea's up to. Remember that free day the corps had (in NY maybe?) where Pat made us practice in the woods, with mosquitoes biting us the whole time, and he kept telling us to ignore them? What line did he come from.....like, that classic '85 BD tenor line or something like that?
This line was sick good. It was an honor to march with them. Jason's solo in individuals was the most ridiculous thing I have ever witnessed! 93 Contra Line! Suta! Just returned from finals last night! FINALLY! It was intense!!!
Center snare Jason Parent taught me in '05. I learned a TON from that guy about feel, flams and all the small things. He broke a lot of bad habits that season. He gives you an old school ass kicking but it's so worth it.
I saw them practice at westside high school in omaha a few of my schools drumline members went to check them out. i saw their entire show rite there it was amazing. and extremely hot. everyone had carrier marks from carrier...tan. burn. thing. lol
I watched it in full screen mode... now I´m.. what do you call it in english? in german it´s ship sick... ;)
Really nice to watch the heros I new just from the DCI Video! Was the first year I marched Snare (no clue at all) and saw DCI shows for the first time!!! they where like gods to me!!! :)
I'm trying to remember people's name on this line. You've got Jason Parent as center snare, but then what was the name of the two brothers on bass 4 & 5? That was some great writing....love it.
Let's see if I can remember everybody. It's been 14 years(Jesus). In the snare line, from left to right, was Kevin Lindquist, Jared Martzell(me), Chris Hansen, Jason Parent, Frankie Chapple, Lee Smith, and Jeff Valperts. Who I could remember from the Bass line was Brett Keller, Jim Devine, one other due I would recognize in a heartbeat, and the two other Lindquist brothers, Jeff and Jeremy. Yeah, we had a pretty sweet book that year. I had a blast.
sean, sorry man, i hardly check the comments here. i thought you already posted all of that stuff, i can start adding it all. sorry it took me four months to notice your comment :-)
Hey Alex, actually I wrote that comment before I bought an encoder and added all the Vids up on youtube, It would probably be better if you did not add them.

What do you think happend that the BD decided to switch to Pearl for the first time ever? Did the quality or R&D of Dynasty drums deminish?

Phantom was stuck in Oberlin, Kansas that year with the corps I was with.
