You need enough water and food to last for 90 days if you plan on staying where you are. If all food and water stopped, it would only be 90 days for all those who didn't prep to die off. In perfect conditions, most people will only last for a week without water. If you have water you can last a lot longer without food.

I keep trying to tell my family to stock up about 3 weeks to 3 months of food and water in case of emergency. Reg - it may be in you best interest to store as much food as you can. Food prices are going to sky rocket. You may be glad that you have supplemented your food supply. Dried beans of any kind, canned tomatoes, you can do lots of things with tomatoes. Sugar and flour. Vacuum pack as much as you can. Rice can be vacuum packed pretty easily. I did a test and opened a package I did a year ago and it was perfect. Buy the food you like.
Per EPA website. If the water is cloudy, filter it through clean cloths or allow it to settle, and draw off the clear water for disinfection. Add 1/8 teaspoon (or 8 drops) of regular, unscented, liquid household bleach for each gallon of water, stir it well and let it stand for 30 minutes before you use it. BUT boiling is preferred! At least a full minute at full boil.
A Gun may not be enough. I feel you will have to group together. Family or frinds, but group together, and always have someone at home armed to defend and protect your food and property. Have you heard about the weather in North Dakota and China? Eventually, if the economy doesn't screw us over, global warming will. People will panic and turn to the government for answers. The government won't have any solution and do like what they did in Hurricane Katrina to a larger extent. The fucked up part with that is the military will probably be our enemy at that point because of firearm seizing and unjust arrests.

Everything nowadays is expensive. We have to worry about being late for work, paying bills, taxes, etc. It would be better if after everything blows over and all the governments gone, we would only need to worry about living. Instead of working, we hunt and build so we benefit ourselves directly instead of going through unnecessary stress to support our families. So in a way, if whatever happens crumbles our economical and social structure, things may turn out better than it is now.
My List : 1) Water of course, best bet is a drip system they cost a lot, around $200 bucks, but work for a 1000 gallons, and you can pretty much use almost any water. 2) Food, yes you can buy canned stuff, but pails of grain and other dry goods, are actually cheaper, there are many suppliers. powdered milk, dried veggies, and rice, etc. cans go way too fast and weigh a lot if you need to move out. 3) Self defense, weapon etc 4) Network with people, there is always strength in numbers -
- If there is riots and chaos, its good to be in a group that watches each other back. 5) Basics, like first aid kit, clothing, crank radio, etc. what will you do if you have no power? no phone? planning ahead is key. also an EVAC kit, ( 72 hour backpack) in case you need to trek out fast, with map, compass , emergency blanket etc. those lipton dinner pack that cost like a buck or less are excellent, just a bit of boiling water and in 5 min a hearty meal. ask any AT hiker :))
yeah, the drip systems are great for big family, but those portable pump jobs are ok for personal use, I once bought a 20 dollar ceramic filter, its worked even on dirty stagnant water. they eventually clog up, but usually can get 20-100 gallons or so on those cheapies depending on how dirty the water is.
non- hybrid seeds are another essential. you should plan on being self sufficent and not relying on a rations cards next year. And when the economy does collapse thats what it will come too. Give up your rights and be hearded like cattle in the cities and suburbs or die free in the country where you can control your own destiny. Live and Let Live!

Although I currently live outside the US, this economic collapse will be world wide, I have made arrangements with a friend that has a big farm, and if things get bad, before I can buy my own land this year, I'll head over there. do permaculture and be self sufficient. so learning to farm is an important survival skill. no to depend on Gov. or external Supplies.

I was born and raised in the US, but currently I am a resident here in the Dominican Rep. some of he advantages of living in the tropics, is year round crops, and no need to use resources for heating. I didn't move down here because of disaster preperation, I moved here because I got a job here :). but I have always had the dream of being off the grid and self reliant. hey the pioneers did it so can we. I don't believe you have to live like little house on the prairie though.
The way I see it, the world will eventually consist of a million villages, instead of Big mega cities, there will be small cities, and millions of towns/villages of around 250 people. there wil still be cars, and some trade, but most everything will be local but this will happen after the transition period, which will be pretty bad. mostly caused by peak oil, which really is the root cause of all the economic problems we have now in the world.

Check out Berkey water purification systems. I have one of those. It purifies water from ponds, lakes, streams, rivers etc. but it doesn't work with salt water. A good investment to have.

I know it's a hassle sometimes transporting weapons from one state to another. At my job, every 7 years, we get 2 months off with pay. I was looking to take a trip around the US and looked into the laws, and it just seemed like a hassle with a weapon with so many different state laws, and I didn't want to go without. I ended up spending my 2 months traveling out of the country anyways - no guns.
I think when the economy comes down, it will be fast, over a series of days. I think once the ball starts rolling down hill, it will escalate fast! actually, you can kill bacteria with chlorine, but any toxins they have released will still be in the water, chlorine is not that healthy also. the problem with boiling is you need a heat source. for those in the city without electric and gas, could be a problem. there is a small ceramic hand pump filter that hikers use which really works well, and is portable. I have used them even in stagnant stands of water, and it came out clean and good tasting.

If you think about it, these people aren't going to fire on police/military when SHTF; but they ARE likely to use their gun against you when they become hungry and desperate. grandmarkai, that's what weapons safety classes are for. Any shooting range offers them, and they're quite inexpensive. The one I went to was very thorough, I went through almost 200 rounds in one 5-hr class - twice as many than what I did my entire military career (USAF).

actually there is no need to boil it, urine is actually free of germs. yeah it taste like piss lol, but in an emergency its safer than drinking from a dirty puddle of water. another tip is to make a solar distiller with clear plastic/glass or plexi, place dirty water under, the tilted glass condenses the evaporated water, and it drips down to container, plans can be found on a google search, "solar distiller plans"..

Great video Demcad. Might I also recommend a sixth category for collapse? Books...lots of them. We are going to become a society where everyone will have to become more reliant on themselves. We will have to reconnect with the knowledge of the past. Books on gardening, first aid, wilderness survival, carpentry, history, music...anything you can think of. If the grid goes down, computers will be useless. But at least if you've assembled a library, you'll be okay!
Wasp spray is an option for people who dont like/own guns. It causes temporary blindness & great pain. Some brands will shoot up to 25 ft. Its legal every where & costs a lot less than pepper sprays & Mace.
Good video to cover the ABCs' of being prepared. You have a fine shotgun and pistol. It's better to be caught with it than needing it and being without.
Those little bottles are NOT filters - they're purifiers. Also, note the second bottle is nothing more than vitamin C - you can get the iodine by itself, and buy cheaper vitamin C.
Did you know that ultraviolet light kills microbes? Get a clear bottle filled with water. Place it in bright sun for 4 hours - it's safe. FILTER the water first with COFFEE FILTERS. Cheap. Effective.
I think you need at least a year of food per person to be really safe. A good way to do that is to get food buckets sealed with grains, beans, lentils, etc. that last for years with oxygen absorbers int them.
Also, you might want to consider buying or building your own ozone generator. It is what water treatment facilities use to treat water. It looks fairly simple to make yourself and it kills all the bacteria in you water and actually cleans it too. No icky taste either. I saw a guy build one on some show I can't remember the name of where they dumped a bunch of people in a warehouse and they had to figure out how to survive.
I dont have a gun but if something were to happen you could use all kinds of things in your home to protect yourself. For example if you had natural gas and an air compressor, with the right mix it would be a great flame thrower. I noticed you had spam. I think corn beef would be better!
You should look into those water filter straws. You can drink directly from a ditch with it. Just stick one end of the straw in and start sucking away. It fits in your pocket and they filter about 50 gallons of water each. An example is the Aquamira Frontier Emergency Water Filter System. They're only like $15 each.
Guns are very dangerous. That's why I prefer, and have more than a few of them. If you have to protect yourself, and your family, why not get the most effective deterrent possible. Anything else (at least that is legal) could be putting you at a great disadvantage.

I think the Lifesaver water purifier bottle is the way to go for cleaning drinking water. Sure it is pricey at $140, but it filters out all viruses and bacteria and is easy to use. I saw it demonstrated at a TED lecture. You can filter hundreds of gallons and when the micron filter is full it quits working so no worries there, just put in another filter.
if there are gun sweeps in a state of emergency, then what happens to all of those guns, they get taken away? for the most part all guns have to be registered. I'd focus more on food, water, enough clothes, a compass, map, etc.
In the event of a gun sweep, many of us plan on either hiding our guns or killing the authorities as they enter your house. Gun grabs are illegal, and the gov, knows that it will end in violence if implimented.
DemCad, I suggest you get a .22 rifle for hunting small game/self protection. Ammo is extremely cheap and you can buy it in bulk, and I would look for a conversion kit for that glock so it can shoot .22 rounds. So you can change from .45 to .22 and back again when desired. .22 ammuntition is very cheap and abundent. Also, get a girls phone number that you like while you can, doesnt matter if she has a boyfriend. When you can offer protection she'll come running to you, lol.

1. Emergency First Aid Kit, and if you can get them, pain killers and antibiotics
2. Battery-operated radios, flashlights, and lanterns and a 3-month supply of batteries
3. Non perishable consumables, like toilet paper and no-name detergents (who needs fabric sheets?)
tried to figure out a substitute for toilet paper since the price is going up and couldn't come up with anything that wouldn't jack up my plumbing.

I keep trying to tell my family to stock up about 3 weeks to 3 months of food and water in case of emergency. Even if you don't believe the US is going to go down it just makes good sense to have a backup supply of food and water and a means to protect it. Thanks for your vids, I look forward to them.

Reg - it may be in you best interest to store as much food as you can. Food prices are going to sky rocket. You may be glad that you have supplemented your food supply. Dried beans of any kind, canned tomatoes, you can do lots of things with tomatoes. Sugar and flour. Vacuum pack as much as you can. Rice can be vacuum packed pretty easily. I did a test and opened a package I did a year ago and it was perfect. Buy the food you like.

Per EPA website. If the water is cloudy, filter it through clean cloths or allow it to settle, and draw off the clear water for disinfection. Add 1/8 teaspoon (or 8 drops) of regular, unscented, liquid household bleach for each gallon of water, stir it well and let it stand for 30 minutes before you use it. BUT boiling is preferred! At least a full minute at full boil.

Everything nowadays is expensive. We have to worry about being late for work, paying bills, taxes, etc. It would be better if after everything blows over and all the governments gone, we would only need to worry about living. Instead of working, we hunt and build so we benefit ourselves directly instead of going through unnecessary stress to support our families. So in a way, if whatever happens crumbles our economical and social structure, things may turn out better than it is now.

My List : 1) Water of course, best bet is a drip system they cost a lot, around $200 bucks, but work for a 1000 gallons, and you can pretty much use almost any water. 2) Food, yes you can buy canned stuff, but pails of grain and other dry goods, are actually cheaper, there are many suppliers. powdered milk, dried veggies, and rice, etc. cans go way too fast and weigh a lot if you need to move out. 3) Self defense, weapon etc 4) Network with people, there is always strength in numbers -

- If there is riots and chaos, its good to be in a group that watches each other back. 5) Basics, like first aid kit, clothing, crank radio, etc. what will you do if you have no power? no phone? planning ahead is key. also an EVAC kit, ( 72 hour backpack) in case you need to trek out fast, with map, compass , emergency blanket etc. those lipton dinner pack that cost like a buck or less are excellent, just a bit of boiling water and in 5 min a hearty meal. ask any AT hiker :))

yeah, the drip systems are great for big family, but those portable pump jobs are ok for personal use, I once bought a 20 dollar ceramic filter, its worked even on dirty stagnant water. they eventually clog up, but usually can get 20-100 gallons or so on those cheapies depending on how dirty the water is.

I was born and raised in the US, but currently I am a resident here in the Dominican Rep. some of he advantages of living in the tropics, is year round crops, and no need to use resources for heating. I didn't move down here because of disaster preperation, I moved here because I got a job here :). but I have always had the dream of being off the grid and self reliant. hey the pioneers did it so can we. I don't believe you have to live like little house on the prairie though.

The way I see it, the world will eventually consist of a million villages, instead of Big mega cities, there will be small cities, and millions of towns/villages of around 250 people. there wil still be cars, and some trade, but most everything will be local but this will happen after the transition period, which will be pretty bad. mostly caused by peak oil, which really is the root cause of all the economic problems we have now in the world.

Check out Berkey water purification systems. I have one of those. It purifies water from ponds, lakes, streams, rivers etc. but it doesn't work with salt water. A good investment to have.

actually, you can kill bacteria with chlorine, but any toxins they have released will still be in the water, chlorine is not that healthy also. the problem with boiling is you need a heat source. for those in the city without electric and gas, could be a problem. there is a small ceramic hand pump filter that hikers use which really works well, and is portable. I have used them even in stagnant stands of water, and it came out clean and good tasting.

actually there is no need to boil it, urine is actually free of germs. yeah it taste like piss lol, but in an emergency its safer than drinking from a dirty puddle of water. another tip is to make a solar distiller with clear plastic/glass or plexi, place dirty water under, the tilted glass condenses the evaporated water, and it drips down to container, plans can be found on a google search, "solar distiller plans"..

Great video Demcad. Might I also recommend a sixth category for collapse? Books...lots of them. We are going to become a society where everyone will have to become more reliant on themselves. We will have to reconnect with the knowledge of the past. Books on gardening, first aid, wilderness survival, carpentry, history, music...anything you can think of. If the grid goes down, computers will be useless. But at least if you've assembled a library, you'll be okay!

Those little bottles are NOT filters - they're purifiers. Also, note the second bottle is nothing more than vitamin C - you can get the iodine by itself, and buy cheaper vitamin C.
Did you know that ultraviolet light kills microbes? Get a clear bottle filled with water. Place it in bright sun for 4 hours - it's safe. FILTER the water first with COFFEE FILTERS. Cheap. Effective.
Only other thing I'd add: fire making supplies.

I think you need at least a year of food per person to be really safe. A good way to do that is to get food buckets sealed with grains, beans, lentils, etc. that last for years with oxygen absorbers int them.

Also, you might want to consider buying or building your own ozone generator. It is what water treatment facilities use to treat water. It looks fairly simple to make yourself and it kills all the bacteria in you water and actually cleans it too. No icky taste either. I saw a guy build one on some show I can't remember the name of where they dumped a bunch of people in a warehouse and they had to figure out how to survive.

I dont have a gun but if something were to happen you could use all kinds of things in your home to protect yourself. For example if you had natural gas and an air compressor, with the right mix it would be a great flame thrower. I noticed you had spam. I think corn beef would be better!

You should look into those water filter straws. You can drink directly from a ditch with it. Just stick one end of the straw in and start sucking away. It fits in your pocket and they filter about 50 gallons of water each. An example is the Aquamira Frontier Emergency Water Filter System. They're only like $15 each.

Btw, it doesn't kill bacteria or filter it. You'd want to boil or chemically treat the water first. I'm no expert, but be aware it exists.

Guns are very dangerous. That's why I prefer, and have more than a few of them. If you have to protect yourself, and your family, why not get the most effective deterrent possible. Anything else (at least that is legal) could be putting you at a great disadvantage.

Good vid, I would just like to say that although the mossberg and glock are somewhat good for protection, a better choice would be an AK47 because it is user friendly, very powerful and can pierce armor and concrete. and like the mossberg, it is affordable (mine was 850, but you can get one for as low as 400)

the guy from collapse was referring to peak oil not the current recession. this hysteria reminds me of the same shit that went on in the 70's and that didnt happen either. everyone made predictions of imminent collapse in 2007 then said oh wait no its 08 then 09 now its 2010 with a food crisis, then it will be peak oil in 2011. and then guess what? it will be 2012 and the world will end just like Y2K. if economy does collapse it doesnt mean you will all turn into cavemen and eat each other

I think the Lifesaver water purifier bottle is the way to go for cleaning drinking water. Sure it is pricey at $140, but it filters out all viruses and bacteria and is easy to use. I saw it demonstrated at a TED lecture. You can filter hundreds of gallons and when the micron filter is full it quits working so no worries there, just put in another filter.

if there are gun sweeps in a state of emergency, then what happens to all of those guns, they get taken away? for the most part all guns have to be registered. I'd focus more on food, water, enough clothes, a compass, map, etc.

In the event of a gun sweep, many of us plan on either hiding our guns or killing the authorities as they enter your house. Gun grabs are illegal, and the gov, knows that it will end in violence if implimented.

DemCad, I suggest you get a .22 rifle for hunting small game/self protection. Ammo is extremely cheap and you can buy it in bulk, and I would look for a conversion kit for that glock so it can shoot .22 rounds. So you can change from .45 to .22 and back again when desired. .22 ammuntition is very cheap and abundent. Also, get a girls phone number that you like while you can, doesnt matter if she has a boyfriend. When you can offer protection she'll come running to you, lol.
