I ordered the extreme duty chain kit today. I figured while it was apart why not do it now. I am planning on having it all installed in march-april time frame. Really anxious to see how it drives after it's all completed. Thanks for all your answers.
I bought the hot cam kit last week but, I have another question for you. When you installed the hot cam, did you also upgrade to the LT4 extreme duty timing chain? In the box the kit came in it recommend it for operation above 5500 RPM. Thanks for your input
@richcory Nope - I left the original timing chain in place. A few years later I replaced it with a heavy-duty chain when I rebuilt the engine as a 383.
Find the link to this vid on corvetteforum... The pic of that car launching is all over google images when you search C4's.. How much did the build cost if you don't mind me asking?
@bighunt08 When I made that video, I hadn't yet rebuilt the engine - it was just a HotCam, headers, and gears. That part cost about $3K total.
Since then I've rebuilt the engine as a 383, giving me almost 500 HP at the crank. The rebuild was about $8K more! It's still street legal and now runs the quarter in mid-11's. Zero to sixty has been as low as 3.1!
@gyro9... Nice!.. I paid 10k for my 94 six speed (70k miles) so for much less than the price of a new one you can rebuild your old one to outrun them!!!... Keep up the good the good work on that fine machine and please post more videos!!!
who did your reflash/chip? I'm about to buy the GM Hot cam kit and I already have the other mods done on my 94 (SW Headers/Exhaust, CAI, Throttle Body). Car sounds great
The chip which was in the car at the time the video was made was made by Ed Wright at Fastchip. I sent him the list of mods I had made, and he made the chip. Turn-around time was just a couple of days.
@gyro9 ok thanks, just yesterday I found his website and he's only about 4 hours away from where I'm stationed now. Thanks for the info and again your vette sounds great.
@al3id After I added the HotCam and the headers, I needed a new chip to account for the different airflow rates. The car ran very rough with the original chip, as expected, after the cam/header swap.
The cam installation took about 12 hours of labor, spread out over about 3 days. The engine wasn't hoisted out, just lifted at the front. However, the hood and radiators had to be removed to allow clearance for the cam to slide in.
I have a 96 LT4 w/2-1.25 cutouts on the exhaust. A simple threaded pipe installed on the pipe before the mufflers. You can just screw on pipe caps before you get home to the wife and everyone stays happy. The guy in this video is obviously not married.
you really need to smoke ur 3rd brake light, i was driving around without my 3rd smoked and i caught so much crap from my friends, but other than that, nice car (mines an 88 convertible)
It's an auto. The chip that was in it during that video recording had an idle of about 800 rpm. I later replaced it with a 900 rpm idle to improve low rpm performance.
My 92 Lt1 i got out of a corvette will be in my truck with in the next 2 weeks fully rebuilt and has the same cam kit as this guy has. But i got about 3400 dollars worth of injectors and ignition upgrades and rotating assembly so it is going to be sweet! 3in collector long tubes omg i cant wait
What is your secret??? how did you make it sound like that? I removed the Cat guts,Removed the mid mufler, I have flow master.....and it is still not BARKING like yours! Why? What I am missing?
The difference, I believe, is the HotCam kit. This cam has significantly more exhaust duration and lift than stock, and thus allows freer flow of exhaust gases.
I bought my 95 7 yrs. ago and had Flo master installed what a joke! The mechanic removed the center mufflers and it still didn't help. It sounds OK but doesn't do what I expected. Not much better than the stock mufflers. Flo Master screwed me out of $400.
Where did you get your hot cam kit? I have a 94 with 1.6 rocker arms, and complete stainless works exhaust and some air intake stuff. Did you have to get the computer reflashed? Yours sounds great!
Wow. That sounds absolutely nuts. How much did the cam cost? Which roller rockers did you use? Thinking about this setup for my '95.
Are the headers necessary to maximize the benefits of the cam? Silly question, though I have a modified exhaust and many C4 owners claim that unless you get longtubes it's tough to improve on the flow of the exhaust...
The GM HotCam kit comes with the camshaft, 1.6 roller rockers, and valve springs. I don't recall the exact cost, but I think it was about $400. Installation was about another $1K.
Before I did the headers, the cam alone didn't help very much. With only the cam, I took only 0.05 seconds off my best quarter mile time. After I did the headers, another 0.25 seconds came off. Most 'experts' recommend doing cylinder heads along with the cam, rather than doing the exhaust, for a better combination.
"With only the cam, I took only 0.05 seconds off my best quarter mile time." This is an interesting comment. The Lt4 hot cam is good for 30+ RWHP. After the cam swap, could you feel the power difference, such as the power band and such??
With just the HotCam, I didn't notice much of an improvement. The exhaust was still too restrictive. Adding long tube headers after the HotCam made a BIG difference.
Good example of the effect of properly matched parts. So many people just throw together a bunch of good parts and expect a good outcome, but unless the parts are all designed to work together you won't get the best results. In this case, the HotCam changed valve timing for the good, but had no effect until the exhaust was modified to allow the engine to breath. Holding the valve open longer doesn't help if no more air can flow because of a restrictive exhaust.
Haven't taken it to a dyno since the mods began, but it regularly runs the quarter in the 12.5 second range. Given the weight of car + driver of 3550 lbs, various online horsepower calculators give about 350 rear-wheel horsepower.
i just got the lt1 out of a 92 corvette and i am putting it my 88 suburban, i was wondering if with the the new 1.6:1 rockers and cam if you had to do any other mods in order for it to run besides setting the timing. SOUNDS AWESOME!
so nothing to the bottom end of the engine the camp springs and lifter were all you did to get the cam to run properly? thats good to hear then because i didnt feel like working on the bottom end untill i turned it into a 383 lt1
would you be able to tell me what the exhaust tip inlet size is, i want to get those tips for the side exhaust on my silverado but i dont know if they will fit- thanks
No, the motor wasn't pulled out, just lifted in front with a jack from below after loosening the front engine mounting bolts. Only the radiator and A/C heat exchanger were removed. Even the hood was left on.
5 years ago I started modding. I did the HotCam kit, which included the 1.6:1 roller rockers. Then, I replaced the stock exhaust headers with Stainless Works long tube headers. In addition, I replaced the original catalytic convertors with Random Tech high-flow bullet cats and replaced the resonator with a MagnaFlow stainless steel X-pipe.
This winter, I installed new mufflers, the HOT (high output turbo) mufflers from CorvetteCentral.
Still got your Vette!? I've been thinking about a HOT cam for my stock LT4...
