@waqasyasin why do you say for starters, does it not have many capabilities or something, and can you slow down the shutter speed and what is the continuos shooting mode like?
@pkdukesnides1 yes we can do everything possible in photography with this DSLR, dont under estimate it =) its one of the best DSLRs for those who are new to photography, CHEAP, GOOD, QUALITY WISE great....continous shooting mode is good, but not as good as the later models, its 3 Frames per second (i dont use continous mode)
but if you are considering buying this DSLR i say go for later ALPHA models, they up to date and the mega pixels go way high than this one (10.2)
My Super Steady Shot is broken and now all my photos are misaligned from the viewfinder. If this were a Canon the SSS would be built into the lens and not the camera body. Fucking bad idea, this is.
It's like an Mac's webcam going out--- you have to send the whole damn thing in to get it fixed.
@bammargeraskate96 A sony without a doubt, more bang for your buck, and a cheaper price for lenses (due to the super steady shot being built into the camera body and not in the lenses)
i dunno, your better saving your money now and going for a canon 1000d or maybe a 550 if u fancy saving more. the lack of movie mode and high raw processing times along with some what high noise at 800+ iso makes this camera a little bit old now.
why buy a camera and just take pictures. buy a 9 in one and take picture, video, listen to mp3's, mp4's, voice recording, webcam, mass storage all in one!
I have this camera, and being somewhat new to photography, I was wondering if you could help me with a query. I have noticed that the exposures take quite a long time. Even with the shutter speed being capable of up to 1/4000, the camera rarely goes beyond 1/100 indoors in normal lighting, and 1/300 outdoors on a bright day. Would you consider this to be normal for this camera, or some sort of issue to adress, because as I see it, it is not performing as it should.
I was going to buy a Sony DSLR because I had a sony DSLR looking camera but was a point and shoot. But after I played with a Sony DSLR I found that I was completely confused about how to work it, I tried using a 450D and found that I understood it from the start so I have gone with that instead.
Just picked up my A200 with 18-70mm from Argos of all places at just £259.99. Had to drive 60 miles for it though... but hey, superb in every way. Low light performance is VERY impressive!!
Got a question about Live View, I know it isn't available on this model but this is something I've not had a definitive answer on because I don't know anyone with the A200. I know it doesn't have Live View but after you've taken a shot can you still review it on the screen? It doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere and I don't want to assume.
of course! haha don't worry the function is there, and you can also zoom in on the pics, quite a large screen too. you can also view histograms of the image to see the levels of colors, black/white levels. Really cool. And delete pictures too of course.
>_> I know it's such a dumb question to ask but somehow when I was reading all the reviews I completely missed the playback button on the back at the bottom left. I was too busy reading specs, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it :P
dude, just cause a200's better specs doesnt mean its better than d40, the a40 beats it hands down when it comes to actual pic taking, btw olympus's suck :D get the d40, iv tried both and the build quality diff is big, the nikon does rock... nice and user freindly too :D
lol. I was in the exact same situation... I have just ordered the a200. It looks a lot better. You might want to save up 4 some more lenses as landscape and macro are two ends of the spectrum.
Can i have some help on this one? Does this mean photo's i have taken on this camera will not be able to be accessed and viewed on the camera's screen? Because I am looking at this camera or the Nikon D40, but there is a 4 megapixel difference between the two, any help out there?
i have just bought one of them today and im so happy with it, i bought the twin lense pack so it also comes with a 75mm-300mm lense. The main use for it for me is aircraft phtotgraphy as i do go plane spotting at heathrow frequently, my m8 has also got that camera and it is very very good
It depends, Im in the same situation. I was thinking i would go with the nikon d60, Then started looking at the rebel xsi, Then leaning back towards the nikon d90
And NOW lol im looking at this one.
Its hard to choose. Cause i dont want to spend so much money, then have it be wasted
How did you do that. The a200 was announced in february 2008 or around this time. When did you buy the xs and when the xti. You must have spent around 2000$ right. why didn't you get a semi-pro or a professional????

if i get it right you are wondering what 18-70mm means in terms of zoom. That means that your zoom range will be about 3,8 X zoom or so. If this is not what you meant then rephrase it.
exactly...for instance 55/18=3.05 and that's the zoom of most kit lenses... (please excuse any mistakes of mine, i'm neither from america nor englad....greece)
I would like to say that there are no best camera in the world,i think it's only which 1 you like it better.
And i don't like to say sony is the best and the rest are rubbish.everyone of them are good, you just need the go out there try it and see which i suits you better.
Hi, i like your reviews, good job! I have a question for you!
Sincerely tell me wich is better the Sony Alpha A200 or the Canon EOS 1000D DigRebel XS.
This will be my first DSLR and i want to my the best for my budget. In MExico City i can find the A200 with the 2 lenses 18-70/75-300 at 615 USD and the Rebel for 485 USD.
im thinking of buying a new one right now. I can't wait till my 15th birthday. When I say can't i mean i won't. I'm just confused between this cam or the sony DSC t700
just got one and couldnt wait for christmas..so i opened it :p im a total noob and i find the instruction booklet very informative. i would go bonkers w/o it. im hoping to expand my shooting skills with the a200...got it at a great price.
hey, so im a beginner in the whole dslr world, what camera do you think would be easier for someone like me to use, the nikon d40 or this one sony a200? thxx
I have had my a200 now for about 6 months, it is my first dslr and I find it's quite a good camera for the money and with the backward compatibility of Minolta af lenses and flashes it represents great bang for your buck and I'd say it's easier to use and understand and comparable with both the canon xti and Nikon d60.
It does vibrate slightly but the anti-dust mechanism only activates on power off, not when you turn the camera on. This is stated in Sony's press releases and websites.
what i noticed, is that the a100 in this vid has a CZ lens... I myself have an a200, good value for money... the kitlens is not too bad, but i like more to shoot with my sigma 28/200...It's an allround lens, and i don't have to change too much...
I bought the A200 back in March, and it's been very good to me. At the time, lined up with similar Pentax, Nikon, and Canon lines, for what I paid for it ($599) at the Sony store, it was WELL worth it. Best price-to-performance ratio. And it also has a goos all-around kit lens. Definitely meant for people starting out or looking for entry-level. Quite happy with it since; if only it was magnesium....naww... :)
Only for certain types of photography. Until a year or two ago no DSLR had it, so no big deal. But compacts all have it and so some ungraders expect it. Its useful for low and high angle shooting, candid/covert photography and tripod based work, but its not essential.
The 'macro mode' is just a scene mode that sets a smallish aperture. I assume you're referring to how close you can get.
Minimum shooting distance on a DSLR is determined by the lens you put on it. The standard 18-70mm kit lens can focus up to 38cm of subject, which is about average. A dedicated macro lens would give 1:1 lifesize reproduction.
Well you do now! As Jamanesli says, the new Nikon D90 has HD movies but with some limitations (eg limited to 5 min clips in HD mode, 20 in std mode, mono, no mic options etc)
I have one and it is superb. It's now £269 @ Amazon, I went through all the different cameras in this price bracket and you will not find more value for money.
Can someone please give me a solid answer on which camera i should purchase......the NIKON D60, SONY alpha 200, Olympus Evolt E-510, or the Canon Digital Rebel XTi??????
Im in the same situation, I think im going with the sony, seems like the same quality of the Nikon/Cannon and has a bigger range of cheap good quality lenes because it can use older minolta lenses.
would you recommend this for action photography
pkdukesnides1 3 weeks ago
@pkdukesnides1 why not??its an awsome camera for starters, but if you increase your budget a bit, i suggest go for Nikon D3100, else go for D5100..
i personally own Sony a200, and Nikon D5100....started off from a200, now moved to D5100...love both my DSLRs =)

hiitsmegoog 3 years ago
the sony alpha a200 is the best...
dagndaniel 3 years ago
Great review, quick question. What kind of lens are you using in the review? Will an 18-70mm standard lens do?
GenocideNZ 3 years ago
It IS the 18-70mm kit lens on the a200. The a100 we showed in some shots had the Zeiss 16-80mm lens fitted.

I'm about to purchase this camera for $339.00. Would this be a good starter camera for someone getting into photography?
TheHubologist 3 years ago
I have had my a200 now for about 6 months, it is my first dslr and I find it's quite a good camera for the money and with the backward compatibility of Minolta af lenses and flashes it represents great bang for your buck and I'd say it's easier to use and understand and comparable with both the canon xti and Nikon d60.

I just got this recently, and it does seem to vibrate when it starts up, contrary to what he says.
Minor point, good review!
elephantarmy 3 years ago
It does vibrate slightly but the anti-dust mechanism only activates on power off, not when you turn the camera on. This is stated in Sony's press releases and websites.

what's live view?
niallswand 3 years ago 2
Live view is just like using a compact camera you can view from the LCD for taking pictures.
tanhockjun 3 years ago
thanks for answering my question.
I don't see why people have a problem with me asking questions.
niallswand 3 years ago
I have just bought 1 A200 i am happy with it,but A300 also have live view the rest is the same as A200.
i buy A200 because it is cheaper that can fit my budget,if you have more money to spend you can consider A300.
tanhockjun 3 years ago
yeah. I am actually thinking of getting the Fujifilm Finepix S100fs , I know its not a DSLR, but it fits my needs perfectly
niallswand 3 years ago
why is the A100 so much dearer than the A200 on Amazon?
niallswand 3 years ago
what lens do you have on the a200 there?
ilovexspin 3 years ago
what i noticed, is that the a100 in this vid has a CZ lens... I myself have an a200, good value for money... the kitlens is not too bad, but i like more to shoot with my sigma 28/200...It's an allround lens, and i don't have to change too much...
sjinouck 3 years ago
Hey everybody! Could you tell me, what is the difference between a200 and a200k? Thank you very much...
AK8305 3 years ago
a200k refers to the lens kit i believe is the dt 18-70mm

I bought the A200 back in March, and it's been very good to me. At the time, lined up with similar Pentax, Nikon, and Canon lines, for what I paid for it ($599) at the Sony store, it was WELL worth it. Best price-to-performance ratio. And it also has a goos all-around kit lens. Definitely meant for people starting out or looking for entry-level. Quite happy with it since; if only it was magnesium....naww... :)

Why does the video keep calling me retarded?
Chikimefuiki 3 years ago
is not having live-view a big disadvantage?
RobinAndTheTightPant 3 years ago
Only for certain types of photography. Until a year or two ago no DSLR had it, so no big deal. But compacts all have it and so some ungraders expect it. Its useful for low and high angle shooting, candid/covert photography and tripod based work, but its not essential.
WhatDigitalCamera 3 years ago
thanx
and apart from the live-view, what are the biggest differences between the a200 and the a300?
RobinAndTheTightPant 3 years ago
Which camera do you think is better, the sony a200 or the pentax k200D?
1ApplePhone1 3 years ago
how is the macro mode on the a200?
kdawg3692 3 years ago
The 'macro mode' is just a scene mode that sets a smallish aperture. I assume you're referring to how close you can get.
Minimum shooting distance on a DSLR is determined by the lens you put on it. The standard 18-70mm kit lens can focus up to 38cm of subject, which is about average. A dedicated macro lens would give 1:1 lifesize reproduction.
WhatDigitalCamera 3 years ago
Dear sir, this Alpha A200 use for photo only or movies clip also available in this camera?
bounmy7 3 years ago
You don't get movie modes on any DSLR. The mirror mechanism gets in the way. If this is important buy a bridge or superzoom compact camera.
WhatDigitalCamera 3 years ago
Or the Nikon D90 =]
Kind of out of the $ range, but it promises to be a good camera with Mono HD quality movies=]
jamanesii 3 years ago
Well you do now! As Jamanesli says, the new Nikon D90 has HD movies but with some limitations (eg limited to 5 min clips in HD mode, 20 in std mode, mono, no mic options etc)
WhatDigitalCamera 3 years ago
im getting this. Quality camera and the price is great!

Features and performance are always good to know, but what about maintenance?
Before you make your purchase make sure you ask where the 'main' backup battery is held, how long it lasts and the likely cost of its replacement.
sonicstep 3 years ago
I have one and it is superb. It's now £269 @ Amazon, I went through all the different cameras in this price bracket and you will not find more value for money.
Baza1968 3 years ago
Can someone please give me a solid answer on which camera i should purchase......the NIKON D60, SONY alpha 200, Olympus Evolt E-510, or the Canon Digital Rebel XTi??????
oogiboogy 3 years ago
Im in the same situation, I think im going with the sony, seems like the same quality of the Nikon/Cannon and has a bigger range of cheap good quality lenes because it can use older minolta lenses.

i second that
