i can't get a sound through my midi interface, i want to record guitar into logic pro 9 directly through my midi interface. I have installed my interface and the signal is showing but i don't know where to go from there, any suggestions welcome
Hey David, been watching all your videos and read your ebook. cant wait to get started in all this! Two questions, If I recorded heavily distorted metal guitar with reverb and all the effects from my amp would it turn out good or would it sound un pro? also after i record it would i be able to loop in strait into logic? thanks
@kyleleetch19 That would be fine . I would try avoid recording the reverb though . Rather record it dry and then add the reverb from your DAW . Just to give you more control
@DavidCamposComposer I always thought the condenser mic to amp was the best approach for recording guitars......since I don't even have a mic I've been doing it from my amp to a PC line-in, but it sounds extremely terrible. What do you think of that?
Hi David, great vid! I'm Tom, I'm 15 and I play guitar, I have been watching a lot of those videos where people do all the different parts to a song on guitar and then put it together to create a track. At the moment, I do not have any software whatsoever apart from Audacity which I'm guessing is not good enough. Anyway, Have you got any tips on which Mic I could buy and which Recording software I could get on my computer, preferably for under 300 pounds in total. Please help! :D
clearly you know what you're doing. but all you told use was to put a mic in front of an amp. this video could have been 2 seconds long. please go into more detail next time
yeah well its a expensive way... a pretty cheap way is to go with a dynamic mic so you wont need phantom power interfaces which can get for under 60 dollars and a good price dynamic mic hasnt got to cosst about 40€
@hjalmarBuoi You are correct about that and you will get a decent result however the sound you get from a condenser mic is much cleaner . dynamic mics tend to sound muffled . they're better for live or very loud recording situations
@DavidCamposComposer hey I love the vid! What is the cost of the AMP course? and when is it supposed to be ready? You seem like you've kinda dropped off the map for a while and I was wondering if that was some indication of time?
@pdgseric Good luck to you little boy! Rule of Thumb: Never piss off anybody in the music business when you're trying or hoping to break in. You piss off one person and word spreads faster than you can say TELECASTER! It's a very large anonymous industry for those such as yourself, but piss the wrong person off and it becomes very small, familiar, and closed....
Why would you ever choose a telecaster over a strat? There's nothing like the tone of a usa strat. And the telecaster is mainly a twangy country guitar.
@pdgseric You're really a genius! Obviously you don't know the history behind either the Telecaster or the Stratocaster. Leo (that's Fender) intended the Broadcaster/Telecaster/Esquire to be a jazz guitar; the Stratocaster to be a country guitar (Bill Carson). Maybe you never heard of Jimmy Page, Steve Cropper, Pete Townshend, Keith Richards, Syd Barrett, George Harrison, Wilko Johnson, or Mick Green. No country twangers on this list even though some might have been influenced by C & W music.
@67Stu the strat is a much better sounding guitar, listen to any modern country artist and the awful telecaster sound they get. And then listen to jimi hendrix or john mayer or eric clapton or rhcp, The strat is one of the 2 main guitars in music. That and the gibson les paul. With those 2 guitars you can get almost any tone you want.
@pdgseric Hi "Genius": Go to Wikipedia and enter Telecaster users. I would take the opinions and experience of any the users over those who are ignorant any day! Reread my original message to you and MAYBE it will clear up you country music stigma of the Telecaster you ignorantly hold. If you're really into quality sounding instruments, than what's with that cheesy sounding acoustic you think you can play? You invariably have TDD: Tone Deficit Disorder! (Pt. 1)
@pdgseric (pt.2) Soliciting funds on YouTube for you to copyright the crap you call music? Little boy (yes, you are a boy), you need to get a clue and grow up! There are plenty of truly talented musicians out there who need way more help than you do! Furthermore, if you're going to ask for funding to copyright YOUR material, than be smart enough to play your "songs" in ALL of your videos, not Michael Jackson's! Nice! However, Motown exclusively used the Neumann U 67 for ALL vocals. Guitars went into the Fairchild compressors. (Peluso makes What he calls the P-67.)
and then where does the microphone go into?? does it go straight to the computer's sound card's line in or does it have to go through some mixer or an external soundcard?? please hepl!
@ProjectBerklee most people use an MBox , u can get a good one for few money and can be as good quility as this ... search for MBOX mini , ull get pro tools with it

@jrafnell that's just one way of recording an amp, there's no 'right' way. You sound like you're just repeating what someone else told you, especially as putting an amp in the corner of a room is probs not a good idea, you get bass build up in room corners, which is not good for guitar. That said, depending on the room, pres, mics etc it could work, there's so many variables for there to be any real 'right' or 'wrong' ways!
@jrafnell The way I did it is not the only way to do it. All these different ways create different sounds. It depends on what you are looking for . Your description is not wrong but your idea about it being the only way is incorrect.
hi david, thanx for your tutorials, the e-book... i stumbled across you by absolute flook... just starting to record my music after threatening to stay clear of the very expensive habit of recording at pro studios... and looking for all the help i can get! roger
@jrafnell it sounded awesome - and i know from experience if you get a crap sound on the way in you cant really "fix" it later - so it amazes me the way he just threw the mic on there and the sound was soo good...
@dsally23 I agree that it isn't a bad recording. I'm just pointing out the way that i think it should be done and the way that a professional recording studio would have done it. But some people think that all you have to do is slap a mic in front of the amp and you'll get a professional sounding recording. this is not true. even after the recording there is a long process of mixing and editing on all instruments whether it be a guitar, a singer, drums, bass, or any other instrument.
@jrafnell I think that the closer to the amp speaker if it is same at low sound is most proper as lesser muffle takes place and that should be the only mic
If you did the amp micing by the book your supposed to put the microphone diaphram on a slight angle to reduce probabality of spl distorstion that is if your using a condenser microphone, if your using dynamic it does not matter as much to an extent. I don't want to give away too many trade secrets though.
@SweetKooshy probably something around there depending on the quality of the microphone your using. that microphone with a stand would probably cost closer to $200. condenser microphones are more expensive. i would actually buy a pair of rode nt5s if you want a good condenser microphone
I NEED SOMEONE TO ANSWER THIS QUESTION VERY BADLY! I am wondering what i need that when i wanna record my amp on clean tone but add distortion in pro tools cause when you record an amp with distortion it sounds like crap and i have a mesa boogie triple rectifier. So what do I need to do this???
I NEED SOMEONE TO ANSWER THIS QUESTION VERY BADLY! I am wondering what i need that when i wanna record my amp on clean tone but add distortion in pro tools cause when you record an amp with distortion it sounds like crap and i have a mesa boogie triple rectifier. So what do I need to do this???
great video. It was educational to see you using a condenser mic to record the guitar amp. It sounds great! You have some great studio musicians as well. Great singer.
@man13preet That is called a "pop shield" . It stops all the "POPS" from "P's" and "B's" when the singer sings. thats why we only use it on vocals and not guitar
@hurtchow Thats true !! its the nature of the business. If I could re-invent every style of music that ever existed then they would have to pay me much more money than they could afford. another factor is what we call the "demo-itis" factor. When a client is set on a specific song and cant afford it , then its up to me to give them almost the same thing ...
@DavidCamposComposer well thats just gay, its not actualy making music to make music.. its just for the money? and thats what leads an artist to shitty compositions. When he only focuses on the money he makes.
@66miguel66 what's wrong with writing 'jingles' like this? If he enjoys it, has fun doing it, and gets paid to do it, what on earth is wrong with that? It certainly beats doing some dead end unrelated job just because you have some misguided sense of musical integrity. I'd be happy to earn a living from anything music related! Just because it's not what YOU would want to do, doesn't mean it's wrong.
@hurtchow I am sure you never heard about James Horner... He is the man behind the soundtrack of famous movies like "Star Trek". He invented some riffs then copied it in all of his other soundtracks..and still makes a beautiful piece of art in every movie he works on. Go search for him, please.
This was awesome guys,, you know doubt are pro's and I loved every second of this video. Thanks for the tips on mic placement. Beautiful tones all around guys!!!
I think you used the song My Girl.... I think I got that right but If i didn't that is alright cause I don't usually listen to that kindof music LOL!!!! But I really liked the sound it was awesome!!!!

Why and what did they put before the MIC when recording that man's voice? and why not during guitar recording?
man13preet 1 year ago
@man13preet That is called a "pop shield" . It stops all the "POPS" from "P's" and "B's" when the singer sings. thats why we only use it on vocals and not guitar

So when advertisers ask for a "motown style piece" you just give them a recycled temptations riff?
I assume this is standard in advertising because I hear facsimile compositions like this all the time.
