How do you coordinate 2 steam engines to output the same power?

You don't, one can be doing all the work and the other nothing, but both drivers know approximately how much power is required to move the train and drive their loco accordingly to provide about half that power. All down to experience.

This rail line goes through a high altitude arrid countryside very similar to San Luis Valley. Beautiful! I want to see it someday.

No these engines are 1922 American Baldwins if you have a look at one of my other videos titled 'Nielsen', this engine was built in 1888 in Glasgow.  I think that there are older engines still running but I'm not sure where.
