I took my Jack Russell Terrier for a 15 mile hike. It took 5 hrs. He rested 2 hrs. and was ready to go again. I was not. What works better is to give a dog some mental exercise as well as physical. When we do agility with the dogs, they wear out faster. The treadmill is mostly to keep the edge off of the higher energy dogs.
this is a lot better than having a high energy dog destroying you're house. There would be a lot less dogs in shelters due to destructive behavior if more owners trained their dogs to use a treadmill.
I walk my four dogs 5 miles a day at a 2.5 MPH pace and they still have energy to burn some dogs need to be excersized more and a 30 minute walk slow relaxed pace doesn't cut it.Especially since work, weather, family commitments can make excersizing a high energy dog hard.High energy breeds are use to working and this can be a great alternative and compromise.
Dogs in one way are like people. When they begin an exercise program, they need to work up in time. Dogs can get sore muscles also. So with this workout, begin at slower speeds for 5-10 minutes depending upon the condition of the dogs. Work up to more time and to a faster speed. Look for the dog to be enjoying the speed, and not be stressed. How much time total depends on the dog. Most dogs do best with 15-20 min a day.
I jump on the treadmill with my German shepherd on rainy/cold days, he loves it. We run together too; he never once tried to jump off the tread mill either.

Actually, now that she is trained, we both get on it together.

we are gonna take advice from a dog trainer who gives a command ( at the 24th sec.... SIT and then allows that command to go not followed?)
