Well, Sony after knowing that some people like "Geohot" did break (hack) the hypervisor (ps3 kind of graphic controller). Remove the option to dual-boot on ps3.

I was forced to remove linux from my ps3, or i could not get system updates.

Its a bollocks!!!

Ps3 for me now its just a media center, nothing else. I dont even play no more.

@Amblyomma i have been forced to do the same... I just really dont like yellow dog and was hoping there was a better alternative. I least we are still able to copy and view our media from our computer's/ laptop's hardrives....

Have you tryed "PMS", a java ps3 media server?

Its really cool, i just install on my pcs, windows/linux, and from my ps3 im able to browse all drives on all pcs. And its alot better than tvercity or windowsMediaCenter11, for subtitles and mkv files. No need for codecs!

And there are some live broadcast cannels.

Yup, not only using firefox but also by torrent (top speed downloading 4mg/s).

Well i dont use it so often now, but ubuntu on ps3 was my only solution, wile my PC went to repair (more then one month).

No! Linux on PS3, is just like running a virtual machine. Sony implemented some restrictions. Theres a BIG news, lately "Geohot" (George Hotz) hacked PS3. He already released the code by the name: Exploid.

Great vid... Have a question. Why did you choose Ubuntu instead of Xubuntu ? It's seems to "run" faster cause of the light graphic weight... Isn't it ?

Normaly they can do both the same thing, so why ubuntu ?

You should make an another vid almost like this, but showing more of the programs and features, for an example find a known linux compitable game and run it, COD 2, Half life orUnreal that works with wine, if wine works though, cause I hears wine isnt working at all with ps3.n :( but try. plz

Well, its impossible (sony let u do dual boot but they have implemented a hypervisor restricting access to the RSX). It means limited acess to grafics chip.

No WINE or emulators. PS3 running another OS, is a limited desktop, with better browser, chat client, torrent, downloads, email, movies with sub, etc , than XMB.

on commands terminal just type as root, "ps3-boot-game-os". On Yellowdog you dont need this, but for others linux distros that do the trick.

I have heard of a trick when you press the power button on the PS3. You have to hold it pressed for 5 sec, and it will boot to the PS3 OS.

Have you tried it ? And if yes, is it true ?

I have the previous version of Linux and I don't use it anymore because the transition back and forth from game OS and Linux is slow and painful. I will not use it often until Sony or someone else develops a way to add @ least a gig or 2 of ram to the PS3 so it is faster for these transitions and the linux applications.

Well, its impossible to use flash-plugin (at least for now). Because adobe flash dont support ppc archicteture (power pc, processor cell). For net movies (youtube, etc) i just use VLC or Mplayer (copy url of the movie to the internet connections on the player). That sould do the trick.

Well, its really simple, just get a wallpaper that you like and do what you want on the toolbars (hide, add app, etc), rigth click on the toolbar and preferences, explore it... ; ) similar as on a microsoft PC.

That seems to be really cool! It seems to look better than yellowdog linux v6.1. Does this operating system have support plugins for video and flashplayer? does it still use blutooth? If you can, send me the link to download the OS so I can experiment on it.
