LifeStraw weighs 2 oz, costs $20, and filters up to 99.9999% of bacteria and 99.9% of protozoa according to the manufacturer - (meets EPA requirements for BOTH!). I got mine at greenbeetlegear on the web.
Great review, just what I needed, instead of watching the standard company video demo... I have subscribed to your channel as you seem to have similar interests to me...
I Would fill up a bottle with river/lake water and put a bandanna over the bottle opening and pour it into a pot and boil it and then filter for %100 clean water
Dude, You might want to ask your Dr to check you for early onset Parkinsons disease. I'm not trying to be mean. But it looked like Mike J. Fox was doing this.
You might want to double check your conversions on liters to gallons. At 4:00 you say 250 liters is equivalent to about 200 gallons. It's closer to 53 gallons.
To get the intake hose further out in the middle of the stream, get a dead branch, or stick, with another branch about 3 or 4 feet up. Break off the top branch to may a " Y ". Stick the branch in the shore mud on an angle, about 30 to 45 degrees over the water, and hang the inlet hose in the " Y " grove. You can also by a longer piece of inlet hose to get it out further into the running water without getting wet..hope this helps. Good video..!!
The only thing about these filters is they aren't purifiers - there might still be viruses in the water. There is one filter that gets out viruses - supposedly the First Need one does.
@Meatwad650 true. But in most backcountry areas virus risk is low, and to minimize any risk, make sure you are not getting water from the very top. Let the water be sucked from underneath the top layer of water (does that make sense?) at least a foot under water anyways.. I've always just used a filter and never ever gotten sick... at least here in Canada, then again most of our water sources are fairly clean.
After puzzling over the 'included instructions' in my new Hiker Pro, I decided 'better check YouTube or I'll never figure out how to use this thing.' And thanks to you, ryan, I'm now 'ready to roll'. (I'd love to meet the idiots who prepare 'included instructions' and teach them how to do a 1-2-3-4-5... step manual that takes you through the steps... )
Good review ... MSR makes a ceramic model as well (miniworks) ... it's about $27.00 more than you paid for the Katadyn hiker, which is not so good, but the ceramic element will clean 2000 liters of water ... or 3 liters a day for two straight years ... might want to buy their repair kit for the filter as well ... it's less than $20.00, but gives you the ability to replace blown seals, etc ... which seems bound to happen over long usage ...
Thanks for the great review. I did some online price hunting and was able to find the Pro version for $59.95. There are many places that carry the regular/pro version but the price range can vary by a good $10-$20 from retailer to retailer, so shop around. For poor muddy water, in dryer areas, I have heard that using a paper coffee filter wrapped around the pre-filter will greatly improve the life of the main filter and also reduce pre-filter issues.
I know I commented on this video already. You saved me $40.00 today. I was going to pick up the MSR filter that was $90.00 then I saw this one for $50.00. I knew you tested it so I went with it. Thanks for posting and the review. I owe you a beer if I ever make it up your way.
Nice one. These filters have certainly advanced and become really affordable. Good demo and nice to see you actually drinking the results. I remember seeing some guy filtering a beer and getting water.. shame they haven't developed something to do it the other way around yet! :)
Good video man. I need to get a new filter my self. I have been looking at the Steripen. I currently use an old Sweetwater Walkabout filter and have for years.
Great info! I use the POTABLE AQUA tablets for camping. The two part system that they claim removes the iodine taste after the water is safe to drink.Still a strong chemical flavor to it if you ask me...Is there any special care you need to take with the filter? wash it out before storage or anything like that to prevent mold or can you just keep it in your pack and use it as needed?
Thanks Buddy! Yeah I have the PA tabs too. Yup they tatse like crap, Even with the neatralizer. Long-term filter storage: They recommend you make a bleach solution with tap water(or micropur tabs instead of bleach), and pump it through the filter. Remove hoses and actual internal filter and let air-dry. When ready to use again, flush fresh tap water through filter to rejuvinate and remove stale taste. Thanks Again!!!!
Cool, sounds like a great buy. I'm going to have to look into one for sure. Seems like the kind of item no home should be without, even if you don't use it for camping there are still many reasons to have one...Thanks for the update.
Another good video Ryan. I used a First Need purifier for years and never had a problem. Filters like this one just started coming out when I was camping back a few years ago. Ill have to look into this one when Im ready for a new one.
and bugs in the water before i choose to use it. Many times with a little searching i can find a natural spring. This is always a welcome treat to the thirsty traveler. Great review and demo. Thanks for breaking this one down. Also great comment on the gas, chem in the water which will not be removed by these filters. Today it is a real problem with trash and junk that people have dumped. There is some beautiful woods right behind my parents house with several ravines. 2 are littered with glass. it was used as an old bottle dump i guess. and the other has several old cars at the bottom. Thats why i always scout and look for living and or dead animals, fish, ...
Excellent video. All the info I need to know - I might actually buy one of those (haven't got a waterfilter yet, and I always wanted one) 60 dollars is a good price in my opinion, it filters alot of water too(!) Thanks for putting this up 5/5
lmao sorry about the comment after comment. at the end of the vid i see some turkeys. lol i just thought i would tell ya a funny story. I once entered a Fm Radio contest. It was a gobbling contest. Not only did i win, The radio station made me go down to the station and prove that i was not using a turkey call. ppl actually called in to the radio station and said that i was using a call for both male and female call. lmao i was like WTF. so i went down and made the calling, retarted story but tru
ALSO your exactly right on the flowing water and also i youst to use my boonie hat to let the water settle, just to make my filter last longer, but then again the filter i was using was pure shyte, it was some dam mil spec thingy. i dont remember the model. once again awesome vid.
awesome vid again bro. i was actually thinking about getting that exact model. now i think i am sure that is the one that i am gonna get. hopefully i should be getting a camera or borrowing one to make some more vids. 5 STARS A++++++
I would recommend it. Why pay more for a filter that does the same thing? On the box it says Americas #1 best selling filter. Sweet, your gonna have to make some Ham Radio vids so I can learn more about it. Thanks!!!
Thanks, I know the very one your talking about. It would be excellent for a survival kit. Very small. I've seen it for as low as $12. It's intended for emergency purposes. Doesn't filter as small as a larger filter would. Great suggestion bro, thanks for commenting!
Eitherway it's only a temporary fix until one can get more adjusted to the situation and when the filters out it's usless but you can always still use the pump. 250 litres is only enough for, average, 125 days one person. the point is it doesn't matter. Boiling water will be the resulting means if a long survial situation is necessary.
people will want what you have... it's better to share with your army. I think it is more about survival than it is hiking.
It all depends what senario your talking about. It sounds like you mean a breakdown of society. The straw filter would be good for a short term survival situation(maybe lost in the woods for a few days, with just your basic kit). Thanks Floweroflife
I was torn between which one I should get. I figured I should go the cheaper route since I was buying other gear at the time. Let me know how works. Thanks Again.

If you get a chance, pick up an Aquamira Frontier Pro. Awesome filter.
It screws onto a soda bottle, or you can use a straw that attaches. Check it out...it's cheap too! $20 and it filters 50 gallons.

Well, there's two kinds. The Aquamira frontier and the frontier pro. The pro filters 50 gallons, the regular one only filters 20.
