My opinion....Jagdtiger was a last solution vehicle....it had a very thick armor and a very powerful gun..But the great disadvantage is it's speed and mobility..it was very slow and it could been taken out by infantry ...the m10 is weak in comparisson...that little canon could do nothin against the jagdtiger...only to damage the tracks ...the best tank destroyer was jagdpanther.Built on a panther hull,it had ood armor and mobility and also good firepower... the disadvantage was it had no turrel
Not to mention the M10 has a huge disadvantage... Its turret has no armor on the top.. One well placed grenade or machine gun could wipe the whole crew out
in a one-on-one situation, the M10 would be at a disadvantage.. but i don't think the huge jagdtiger would have a chance against hordes of the enemy... just give me a well-camouflaged 88. hehehe
@1ownjoo2 yep... same opinion here. jagdpanther was easily yet arguably the best hunter of the war, at par with the russian converted heavies and definitely superior in a one-on-one situation against any USA or british type.

But in our world, the infinitely more mobile and cheap M10 could easily outmatch the JagdTiger, because there were 75x more M10s produced than JagdTigers. Could a JagdTiger take on 75 M10s? GSH. Not sure which version of Prokhorovkha you are reading about but the Germans were not in the middle of breaking through anything. The battle was lost when Hitler withdrew the SS Panzers.
Did a 3lb gun on the M-10 make it such a "tank destroyer"...or was it later up-gunned to something with a little more punch?
The Firefly was had a 17lb gun - correct?-seems a little more suited to take out a large German tank...better yet a P-47 or P-51 or even a p-38 seems like a better option!
@edmonddantes64 The m10's 3 inch gun was changed to a 90mm m3 gun, and the name was changed to M36 Jackson Tank Destroyer, the M36 Jackson with 90mm was an excellent tank killer, but the problem was it was too thinly armoured and had open top, exposing crew to sniper fire and artillery barrage shrapnel!
Battle of Kursk is interesting point. Mine Fields layed the awsome Tiger to waste . Its was The Germans who intiated the attack and were immediatily under huge barages of artillery fire and were caught in minefileds, there offense stalled in the mud of Russia.
@GalaticSpaceHero The Tigers did enough damage in Kursk, especially in the battle of Prokhorovka, to the point where the Soviets panicked and threw in all their reserve tank armies to stem the tide of Tiger's smashing through the T-34's. It was like two heavyweight boxers beating each other to death, it became a huge tank grave-yard, mostly of Russian tanks actually, German losses at Prokhorovka were 150-200 tanks, and Russian losses were 500-600 depending on the sources, that's why IS2 was made
@GalaticSpaceHero Contd...., actually very few German Tigers were destroyed by mines, German sappers cleared mines under intense artillery barrage and machine-gun fire, most of the Tiger's got through, along with Panzer IV's toward Prokhorovka, that's when the Soviet Marshall Zhukov panicked and through in every last one of his tank reserves to stem the German Tide. After Prokhorovka, the Germans still had enough strength to continue attack a day later and believed a breakthrough was imminent.

The Tigers combat tracks were very effective, they were 72.5 cm wide or 2 FT 4.5 Inches, and had ground pressure of 14.8 LBS/SQ inch, or 1.04 KG/SQ Centimetre. The Transport Tracks were 52.1 cm wide or 1FT 8.5 inches, and had a ground pressure of 20.4 LBS/SQ inch or 1.43 KG/SQ cm. The Combat Tracks rarely got stuck, but nothings perfect

Let's see, the JagdTiger had 250mm of frontal sloping armour that no allied tank could penetrate, it has a 128mm longbarrel gun that could pulverize the crappo M10 tank destroyer or the M4 Sherman or the Churchill or Cromwell tanks or the Pershing tank for that matter, yet some morons in this forum seem to think that allied tanks were not obsolete. News-flash without allied air power, allied tanks would not stand a chance, look at Operation Goodwood in Normandy July 18-21, Brits lost 400 tanks.

Most King Tigers didn't even see combat, because they were broken down. The tank was one of Hitler's, "super weapons", that was intended to save his pathetic life from justice. It failed. Even Hitler himself was disappointed with the King Tiger. Using slave labor to manufacture them didn't help reliability either.

@makemeroblox2 - The M10 tank destroyer was never intended or designed to destroy the Tiger, as it was designed and built before the Tiger tank was even on the scene. When the Tiger tank arrived, the M10 wasn't used against it until it was upgraded with a 90 mm gun.

@peyo001 - Yes, the M10 had twin diesel engines, ("motor" is electric), that generated 375 horsepower each. For its vehicle type, it was very fast and that speed/elusiveness made it hard to hit.

@Nikola24able - When we compare the very slow, mechanically unreliable Jagdtiger to the reliable, very fast M10, the comparison is clear. The biggest gun and thickest armor in the world mean nothing if the thing is breaking down all the time, which the Jagdtiger did with serious transmission, steering gear and dangerous fuel leak problems. The M10 used speed and maneuverability for self defense, as opposed to heavy armor that would make it a slow, easy target.

The jagdtiger was formidable, but it sure didn't win the war for them. The best German tanks were very good when one was there, and actually running, but they were too expensive, too unreliable and too fuel hungry, which is one reason they kept the PzKw IV in production up until the end. Really, the best tank of the war was the T34, which is what inspired the big German iron, and many still serve today.
@FlaggerX Nah man. The T-34 was good for sure,l but the Panther was the best all around period. Much better than a T-34 and cheaper and easier to produce than a T-34. The Panther had better comms, better optics, etc.

@kmapes Panther was by far better than T-34 one on one as a tank, but no way was it cheaper and easier to produce. It was a nightmare in those respects. Might want to check those Tiger production figures too...Tigers I, II and Jagdtiger all up came to just over 2000. Agree with Panther influencing modern design tho, it was almost perfectly balanced as far as weight/armour/gun ratio.
@kmapes - One of the huge drawbacks to any WWII German tank was that they were over-engineered with the Germans being very anal about the engineering and construction of their tanks, which greatly slowed down production rates. There is no need for an engine, or part, to last many years when the average combat life of a tank might have been merely a few months. When Nazi Germany lost a tank to combat, it took *months* to replace, where'as the Allies could replace a tank *immediately*.

My opinion....Jagdtiger was a last solution vehicle....it had a very thick armor and a very powerful gun..But the great disadvantage is it's speed and mobility..it was very slow and it could been taken out by infantry ...the m10 is weak in comparisson...that little canon could do nothin against the jagdtiger...only to damage the tracks ...the best tank destroyer was jagdpanther.Built on a panther hull,it had ood armor and mobility and also good firepower... the disadvantage was it had no turrel

-The M10s would be able to pierce the armor in the right places.
-Even with 25:1 odds, there is no way one tank can take on 25 tanks in combat, I'd suspect a high priority would be the JgTg's tracks, and once they were gone, it would be helpless.
In war, quality only works when you have good enough quantity, that's why the Axis lost.

@edmonddantes64 The m10's 3 inch gun was changed to a 90mm m3 gun, and the name was changed to M36 Jackson Tank Destroyer, the M36 Jackson with 90mm was an excellent tank killer, but the problem was it was too thinly armoured and had open top, exposing crew to sniper fire and artillery barrage shrapnel!

@GalaticSpaceHero The Tigers did enough damage in Kursk, especially in the battle of Prokhorovka, to the point where the Soviets panicked and threw in all their reserve tank armies to stem the tide of Tiger's smashing through the T-34's. It was like two heavyweight boxers beating each other to death, it became a huge tank grave-yard, mostly of Russian tanks actually, German losses at Prokhorovka were 150-200 tanks, and Russian losses were 500-600 depending on the sources, that's why IS2 was made

@GalaticSpaceHero Contd...., actually very few German Tigers were destroyed by mines, German sappers cleared mines under intense artillery barrage and machine-gun fire, most of the Tiger's got through, along with Panzer IV's toward Prokhorovka, that's when the Soviet Marshall Zhukov panicked and through in every last one of his tank reserves to stem the German Tide. After Prokhorovka, the Germans still had enough strength to continue attack a day later and believed a breakthrough was imminent.

Hitler cancelled operation Citadel, not because he thought they were gonna lose, but because the allies invaded italy and he wanted to withdraw panzer divisions to counter the allies in Italy, this infuriated Field Marshall Von Manstein, because he was sure of a breakthrough

When you said the Tigers got stuck in Russian mud, that's false, Tiger tanks had extra wide combat tracks that gave it a lower ground pressure than the Sherman narrow track. Tiger 230MMP vs Sherman 280MMP.

The Tigers combat tracks were very effective, they were 72.5 cm wide or 2 FT 4.5 Inches, and had ground pressure of 14.8 LBS/SQ inch, or 1.04 KG/SQ Centimetre. The Transport Tracks were 52.1 cm wide or 1FT 8.5 inches, and had a ground pressure of 20.4 LBS/SQ inch or 1.43 KG/SQ cm. The Combat Tracks rarely got stuck, but nothings perfect

They didn't have minesweepers, so they used the, "hi-tech", method of forcing their soldiers at gun point to march arm-in-arm across minefields, blowing themselves up and, "clearing", the minefield so their tanks could safely pass. The Communist Soviet/Russian army lost millions of soldiers in WWII not to just the German military, but because they *killed their own people*! This is not something to admire. Sick.

@CptBlack12-Your, "pet", was a mechanical piece of junk. The King Tiger was plagued with very serious steering gear and transmission failures, as well as very dangerous fuel leaks. Most King Tigers didn't even see combat, because they were broken down. The tank was one of Hitler's, "super weapons", that was intended to save his pathetic life from justice. It failed. Even Hitler himself was disappointed with the King Tiger. Using slave labor to manufacture them didn't help reliability either.

@makemeroblox2 - The M10 tank destroyer was never intended or designed to destroy the Tiger, as it was designed and built before the Tiger tank was even on the scene. When the Tiger tank arrived, the M10 wasn't used against it until it was upgraded with a 90 mm gun.

@peyo001 - Yes, the M10 had twin diesel engines, ("motor" is electric), that generated 375 horsepower each. For its vehicle type, it was very fast and that speed/elusiveness made it hard to hit.

Yes a large quantity of German armor that was knocked out of action was done so via allied fighter bombers. But to say that the .50 cal was an effective weapon at this task is just flat out wrong concidering the .50 cal was hard pressed penetrating 8mm of steel plating at 250 meters using ball ammunition.

@Nikola24able - When we compare the very slow, mechanically unreliable Jagdtiger to the reliable, very fast M10, the comparison is clear. The biggest gun and thickest armor in the world mean nothing if the thing is breaking down all the time, which the Jagdtiger did with serious transmission, steering gear and dangerous fuel leak problems. The M10 used speed and maneuverability for self defense, as opposed to heavy armor that would make it a slow, easy target.

The jagdtiger was formidable, but it sure didn't win the war for them. The best German tanks were very good when one was there, and actually running, but they were too expensive, too unreliable and too fuel hungry, which is one reason they kept the PzKw IV in production up until the end. Really, the best tank of the war was the T34, which is what inspired the big German iron, and many still serve today.

@FlaggerX Nah man. The T-34 was good for sure,l but the Panther was the best all around period. Much better than a T-34 and cheaper and easier to produce than a T-34. The Panther had better comms, better optics, etc.
The JadgTiger and Tiger didnt win the war because they probably produced 3500 of them combined, whereas there were probably like 40,000 T-34s produced
While the Germans took the sloping armor armor from the T-34,you could argue the Panther is the grand-daddy of todays tanks

@kmapes Panther was by far better than T-34 one on one as a tank, but no way was it cheaper and easier to produce. It was a nightmare in those respects. Might want to check those Tiger production figures too...Tigers I, II and Jagdtiger all up came to just over 2000. Agree with Panther influencing modern design tho, it was almost perfectly balanced as far as weight/armour/gun ratio.

@kmapes - One of the huge drawbacks to any WWII German tank was that they were over-engineered with the Germans being very anal about the engineering and construction of their tanks, which greatly slowed down production rates. There is no need for an engine, or part, to last many years when the average combat life of a tank might have been merely a few months. When Nazi Germany lost a tank to combat, it took *months* to replace, where'as the Allies could replace a tank *immediately*.
