@Liveyourlifeon0402m hey man! do you have any knowledge about cars?hmm.....this is ABCDEFGH..... of car's engine........dohc--> double over head cam and OHV---->over head valve.......both have different arrangements.
since the cams are situated over the cylinder/valves, and not in the block, there is less drivetrain inertia to overcome. What you get is a freer revving engine that can rev higher. See, a pushrod design uses exactly that...pushrods to turn the cam. That's a lot of extra weight that "slows" down the engine. So max engine speed is reduced, thus max potential power is reduced. But DOHC motors are not exactly saving in weight either. Since the cams are on the top, the engine tends to be bigger.
I do agree that the performance of a 2L and lower and higher are on par and sometimes greater than the usual American muscle engines. The only thing they have to "gloat" about is speed off the line thanks to huge torque. Otherwise, in the REAL world, they're just... well, gas guzzlers.
lol, have a look at the engine in a honda integra R. 1.8 litre Dual Over Head Camshaft(DOHC), Variable Valve Timing and Electronic Lift Control (VTEC). Produces more than 100 BHP per litre normally aspirated.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Oh man. An ESCORT? /FAIL. DOHC is simply an intake design, VTEC is a type of cam.
Nothing. DOHC simply means it has dual overhead camshafts. VTEC is Honda's variable valve timing system. It switches over to high-profile secondary cam lobes at 5000 RPM, allowing more fuel and air into the cylinder. Basically, it allows you to drive economically because it uses less gas below 5000 RPM, but you also have the option of stepping on it and having more power after 5000 RPM. You can have DOHC engine with or without VTEC.
More in depth is that VVT, which many companies use in their own way, generally means there's a lag time past a set RPM because they retard the cams, often by pushing a positive pressure oil into the cam which, at a certain RPM pushes the cam shaft either forward (advancing) or backwards (retarding) so that the valves stay open longer at higher RPM's allowing a greater amount of air/fuel to enter, or to close quicker at lower RPM's giving it better response time and fuel economy.
there is Vtec SOHC and DOHC Engine's from Honda. Usually engages 4,500 or higher depending on ECU. I been in a I-Vtec RSX you could still feel and hear it engage around 5k rpm but I was told it's like my old 89 Golf Digifant Computer. It would change with the style of driving and I vtec is designed to give you the extra torque and HP at any RPM. Anybody correct me if IM wrong about I-vtec.
@muddwell I love them to, it's a shame they only produce less than 50% of useful energy! About 30% for petrol and 40% for diesel. If the manufacturers wanted to make them more efficient they would've done, but why would they? They get paid from the oil companies not to make fuel efficient engines -)
