Linda Ronstadt was my first rock n roll crush from the 70's. She was just a little older than you now. I am very critical of anyone covering her songs, but you did an outstanding job!
Please do not ever go on American Idol, you have too much talent for that.
Laura, This is my favorite version of Different Drum. I have seen some of your other performances on Youtube and I think you were a very brave and accomplished singer. You have a lot to be proud about even if you decide not to return to singing. I don't think many people have done or will do as much with their life as you did. Best wishes!
Linda Ronstadt almost always had no shoes on when singing as a very young woman and It may be Laura wanted to do it just like Linda did. Great job Laura.
Laura, that was really excellent. You have a beautiful voice and you really did a lovely job on this song. It was so nice to hear it without the usualy country twang. Please keep singing. Roger
i thought it was very good,i remember when the song came out they used it for a Brut commercial ,had a guy and his bride riding off on a motorcycle while this song was playing
@TheRealCatnut HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. I COMPLETELY AGREE!!!! YES IT IS I, THE LAURA OF THE VIDEO. BOW DOWN. just kidding, completely, let me grovel at your feet for evern watching my video! now that THAT'S out of the way, but i don't tell any of my musical world about these times because i rarely felt ANY emotional connection to these songs, EVER. not EVER. wrong idea of music yes? just to let you know, i'm working HARD to be a musician. ;)
I hear her going sharp, and much more than once or twice. She appears to be nervous, and sharps easily come out of that. In the home studio recording she isn't pitchy. In both versions [especially in the home version it's clear that she needs some serious guidance in phrasing. Certainly a lovely timbre and a voice well worth the expense to train.
Also, training is indicated in onstage performance [switching the mic back and forth constantly is distracting, for example, and other than that, she's virtually stiff as a board.. She's not comfortable in her own skin.onstage here.
@arfalon Ah, great comments, thanks for elaborating! Your ear is clearly better honed than mine; it's fun to read a thorough, discerning assesment of her performance.
@arfalon Appreciate the comments. Laura and I are very surprised at how popular this video has been. The studio version was done almost 2 years earlier, at age 14, so that may account for the phrasing comment. Of the 4 songs Laura performed that day, this was the most pitchy. Don't really know why, other than we dusted it off only a few days before the show. As to her hands, that has been her Number One performance issue -- she never seems to know what to do with her hands.
Out of desperation I was looking for the original of the Stone Ponys performing "Different Drums. While Laura isn't Linda, she does a remarkably nice version of this song. Nice voice, smooth sound.
Laura was being a rebel this particular day, insisting on doffing her shoes while singing. This song was the 3rd of 4 that day, and I'm sure she was getting some steely stares from those who insisted that she keep her shoes on. Still kudos to her for seeming to enjoy herself anyway.
@stinkybutt32 I DEFINATELY was holding back. this was completely the equivalent of dressing up a lion in a tutu and asking it to sing in uncomfortable shoes.
WELL DONE!!!!

Great taste in music and a real good voice to boot! I wonder if she took her shoes off because Linda Ronstadt often did the same thing.

She needs to break a few hearts then try again. Fair voice but it's like watching paint dry.
