The song was composed while Mason and a college buddy went on a summer trip westward passing thru little towns with "classical gas" stations on route-66. His artist friend drew portraits of the gas stations before they vanished into nostalgia. The art fits the song.
Anyone remember this golden great on BRMB Radio's Dave Jamieson show in the late 1970s? Dave had a Friday night quiz called 'Six of the Best', and this music was used as background. A real gem from that golden era of radio broadcasting.
This was a real Anthem song of the sixties, and one of the greatest acoustic guitar accomplishments of all time. I still get chills every time I listen to it. Astounding! The whole album is great, really, but they wouldn't know what to do with Mason Williams today, because everything on the charts has to fit a cookie-cutter mold of what sells.
@suir52 No, Mason Williams himself composed "Classical Gas", but Mike Post produced the record. But as you said, Mike did compose a lot of great TV Theme music, though. The theme from the great show "Black Sheep Squadron" was one of many.
A new music book is being published called 'You Are A Tube!' compiled by Steven Fried PLC. This publication contains literally thousands of comments from YouTube.
Back in the days when an instrumental could rock the Billboard and Cashbox Top 100 charts & people would actually talk about a song. This was simply incredible when it was released and Mason simply a writer for the Smothers Brothers, Glen Campbell Show and Saturday Night Live. Two Grammy Awards for this memorable track -- that people still talk about.
I remember getting through ONE solo public performance of 'Classical Gas', in a high-school music class. I only did it because a jackass and his buddies used to barge into my rehearsals and blurt out, 'Play Classical Gas!' just to interrupt. So it was my performance piece one Friday. The jackass-and-buddies came up to me later and said irately, 'We only said that 'cause we didn't think you could do it'. I replied, 'Well, think again!' I savor that moment, even if I DID get punched for it...
I did not know the name of this instrumental... I can't tell you how long it took to find it. It took thumbing through countless instrumentals from the 60's and 70's and listening to the samples on I-Tunes. I would have never guessed it would be called Classical Gas. lol
I remember this as far back as about 1984 when I was no more than 6.
I think one of the reasons I like this so much is because I like how the guitar and orchestra sound together. Just like that instrumental "Love is Blue".
If ANYONE could get hands on this track without the lead guitar, as a backing track, I would be truly greatful and I would upload a cover of it to show my appreciation. Let me know! thanks
Holy crap, I fell in love with the acoustic version on Handmade, I even learned to play it, but in comparison to THIS... the acoustic version is water... versus thick awesome combustion power gasoline!

This song has been one of my favorites for the last 40 years. Even now it does not sound out-dated but as wonderful as at the time of its original release
@MrBlacklorre Yes it was. This peaked at #2 on the Hot 100 in 1968. It is on the Mason Williams Phonograph Record album which has been released on CD, but the CD is now out of print, but you can find used copies of the CD on Amazon. A great album worth seeking out.
this single is used as tune for the Dutch Radiostation Radio Noordzee Inetrnationaal ( RNI) in the beginning sixties and later on Radio Mi Amigoboth on the Northsea...nice tune
Its a bossa base with rock, and pop, and salsa, and spaghetty western, and some kenny G, with some ray conniff and with a lot of pre connick jr cheese sound, with the classical at the gas thing....blah blah blah............................................................Elevator music.
I wonder what this song would sound like without the orchestra behind it...The origins of this song sound just like a sexy flamenco song from Spain. Flamenco guitar is very similar and is sooo sexy! Check out Segovia!
This original version is really great, I never heard it and did not know Mason Williams was the creator of this beautiful music. Till now I only knew the version played by the Dutch guitarist Jan Akkerman, which is also breathtaking. Compare great musicians is silly and chose which one is better is even more silly because it all comes down to a matter of taste in the end doesn't it? I love both versions anyway.

Think of all the modern artists who should weep salty tears of admitted inferiority (miss Spears, miss Carey, and the rest of the suppliers to the cult of mediocraty/shiiite) I agree with vikingsownpackers below. more quality less quantity.

@lastrada52 ... This was an instant hit. Mason Williams, great musician,
very creative and very nice person. He is very humble - and very talented.
Yes, the WRECKING CREW is backing him ...... Hal Blaine - those tight
drums - you know right away. This album kept selling out at the USAF
PX (where we bought stuff cheap --- because it was 1968)
