  • Anyone remember this golden great on BRMB Radio's Dave Jamieson show in the late 1970s? Dave had a Friday night quiz called 'Six of the Best', and this music was used as background. A real gem from that golden era of radio broadcasting.

  • This was a real Anthem song of the sixties, and one of the greatest acoustic guitar accomplishments of all time. I still get chills every time I listen to it. Astounding! The whole album is great, really, but they wouldn't know what to do with Mason Williams today, because everything on the charts has to fit a cookie-cutter mold of what sells.

  • Also used Frasier, as he was trying to find a new look for his apartment, after the new station owner completely copied his!

  • thumbs up if you love this song

  • loved this song for a long time thanks

  • First hit produced by Mike Post.

  • @MegaDean26 Did Mike Post compose it? One of the great TV theme composers.

  • @suir52 No, Mason Williams himself composed "Classical Gas", but Mike Post produced the record. But as you said, Mike did compose a lot of great TV Theme music, though. The theme from the great show "Black Sheep Squadron" was one of many.

  • @MegaDean26 It's OK, I checked on IMDb, Mike Post produced and arranged it

  • Please, watch my version!!!, you´ll love it...

  • Thanks So Much for sharing. I have loved this song sing it came out. I can still hear my Dad yelling "Turn it Down!" whenever I play it LOUD.

  • One of my all-time favorites!! ♥♥ Mason William was non pareil...♥♥♥

  • Simply Brrrrrrrrrrrrilliant.

  • Back in the days when an instrumental could rock the Billboard and Cashbox Top 100 charts & people would actually talk about a song. This was simply incredible when it was released and Mason simply a writer for the Smothers Brothers, Glen Campbell Show and Saturday Night Live. Two Grammy Awards for this memorable track -- that people still talk about.

  • @lastrada52 ... This was an instant hit. Mason Williams, great musician,

very creative and very nice person. He is very humble - and very talented.

Yes, the WRECKING CREW is backing him ...... Hal Blaine - those tight

drums - you know right away. This album kept selling out at the USAF

PX (where we bought stuff cheap --- because it was 1968)

  • Mystery guitar man facebook. Nuff said.

  • @ZacharyHere YES! im not the only one :3

  • I guess a very revolutionary melody for those days !

  • FRASIER.

  • I remember getting through ONE solo public performance of 'Classical Gas', in a high-school music class. I only did it because a jackass and his buddies used to barge into my rehearsals and blurt out, 'Play Classical Gas!' just to interrupt. So it was my performance piece one Friday. The jackass-and-buddies came up to me later and said irately, 'We only said that 'cause we didn't think you could do it'. I replied, 'Well, think again!' I savor that moment, even if I DID get punched for it...

  • @jrcadet4 - Love it! That story made me smile.

  • I did not know the name of this instrumental... I can't tell you how long it took to find it. It took thumbing through countless instrumentals from the 60's and 70's and listening to the samples on I-Tunes. I would have never guessed it would be called Classical Gas. lol

I remember this as far back as about 1984 when I was no more than 6.

  • I think one of the reasons I like this so much is because I like how the guitar and orchestra sound together. Just like that instrumental "Love is Blue".

  • @TriforceSD

Both are awesome - from the same year - back when popular music was joy to the ears

  • this song has won me untold drag races and the woman i love.

  • Awesome!!! want to learn to play this...and I will!!~~:0)

  • LOVE THIS!! Especially the gitaur playing

  • Good memories of being a little girl.

  • My all time favorite song. I wore out many 45's & cassettes. I've listened to it 4 or 5000 times & never get tired of it. No joke.

  • I agree thanks Lisa Simpson or her creators :-)

  • If ANYONE could get hands on this track without the lead guitar, as a backing track, I would be truly greatful and I would upload a cover of it to show my appreciation. Let me know! thanks

  • @Tollheit93

    actually it was lenny :D

  • Holy crap, I fell in love with the acoustic version on Handmade, I even learned to play it, but in comparison to THIS... the acoustic version is water... versus thick awesome combustion power gasoline!

  • Sooo beautiful! Takes me back. Thanks for posting this.

  • Truly a CLASSIC, and a wonderful, beautiful piece! Thanks.

  • The Bruce Lee of classical , guitar!

  • Comment removed

  • I'm here thanks to Lisa and Lenny :)

  • Boy, does this grab your gut and imagination.

  • This hit by Mason Williams was the 107th #1 song on what is now Billboard's Adult Contemporary charts. It also hit #2 on the Top 40 charts.

  • 1:12

  • I have loved this since I was 7 years old...thank you for posting it!!

  • Used to hear this a lot as a kid, quite sure it was over the timeclock between schools programmes on daytime TV in Britain!! Brings back memories! Wow!!!!

  • love it

  • 11 people have trapped wind

  • Thank you so much for posting. Love this song.

  • Thank You! This song and "Love is Blue" always take back, just for a few minutes, to my childhood.

  • In that picture, Williams looks like a young Newt Gingrich. Just a little.

  • This song has been one of my favorites for the last 40 years. Even now it does not sound out-dated but as wonderful as at the time of its original release

  • Was this a popular song in its time? I think its great!

  • @MrBlacklorre Yes it was. This peaked at #2 on the Hot 100 in 1968. It is on the Mason Williams Phonograph Record album which has been released on CD, but the CD is now out of print, but you can find used copies of the CD on Amazon. A great album worth seeking out.

  • i actually 1st heard that tobuscus guy play it he did it very well but rest of his videos are way to exaggerated

  • Looks like Jack Dee :). Great song!

  • This is the best driving song of all time.

  • My Freshman year of college ...

  • this single is used as tune for the Dutch Radiostation Radio Noordzee Inetrnationaal ( RNI) in the beginning sixties and later on Radio Mi Amigoboth on the Northsea...nice tune

  • what a brilliant piece - my brother Gerard loved it too - thank you

  • ...Love this tune! Iremember the first time i heard it i fell in love with this song! Awesome! Thanks vwest1 for posting it!

  • very good

  • i always loved this song; it lasts no matter how much time passes: that's a classic.

  • I remember hearing this way back when. Always liked it. He also worked with the Smothers Brothers on their TV show.

  • DENTAL PLAN

  • Preed a little

  • 11 people disliked this *Masterpiece* ... WTF???

  • @msginca they must have tin ears

  • Classical Gas is a classical tune!

  • dental plan

  • Ummmm....Viva Leo Kottke and Armadillo album!!

  • Its a bossa base with rock, and pop, and salsa, and spaghetty western, and some kenny G, with some ray conniff and with a lot of pre connick jr cheese sound, with the classical at the gas thing....blah blah blah............................................................Elevator music.

  • This guy definitely put some gas on the classical game for sure.

  • I wonder what this song would sound like without the orchestra behind it...The origins of this song sound just like a sexy flamenco song from Spain. Flamenco guitar is very similar and is sooo sexy! Check out Segovia!

  • Mason Williams was just on PBS this evening playing this song...It still is mind blowing!

  • I loved it when it came out and still do!

  • This is such an amazing arrangement. Definitely a great influence.

  • A Bizarre Collection Of Puzzles by The Enigma

  • one of the greatest acoustic songs ever played

  • The 11 dislikes must have major life issues. This is pure brilliance.

  • If Mason had smashed his guitar at the end like Coldplay or U2 this would have been Radio 1's Theme!!!

    Great upload!

  • @TheTechnofilms Haha how true.

  • @DirkieA: Yeah, Jan Akkerman on the "Focus".

  • Simply classical.

  • This original version is really great, I never heard it and did not know Mason Williams was the creator of this beautiful music. Till now I only knew the version played by the Dutch guitarist Jan Akkerman, which is also breathtaking. Compare great musicians is silly and chose which one is better is even more silly because it all comes down to a matter of taste in the end doesn't it? I love both versions anyway.

  • *I* hear a 12-string steel string "underneath" the Classical guitar...am I alone? Try headphones...

  • I have been looking for this theme for more than 20 years, not knowing the name (instrumentals are nor very helpfull title-wise!!!)

    thank you !!!!

    zeljkonovacic@yahoo.com

  • This is brilliant - always loved this version - its the best - thank you for putting it on here

  • All the reasons to love classical football!

  • @stone412 hahaha that is fucking great!!!

  • @Lesh4life I'm not much oif a fan, myself. I'll watch it but wo't bet. So...this song kinda opens your eyes to appreciate the sport a little better. :-)

  • Takes me back to old school WCW when Johnny Powers still owned it.

  • ROFL i played this with my guitar in front of my two friends that wanted to learn to play guitar. Theyre like, "fuck, i quit!" XD

    /watch?v=s_gLx88XsJ0

  • I heard this song once, and after that I fell in love with it straight away. I was born in the wrong era :/

  • 9 people are deaf!

  • @MohamedOubellaTV ***DEAD

  • what a beautiful song

  • Just makes me tap my foot and nod my head and think of happier times.I was born in 1957 and have seen nothin but the worst of times and the best of times. Oh woe to us Baby Boomers. All we can do sometimes is wish for happier, kinder times!

  • @teresajester It's the babies boomers fault can not wait until that generation dies out, it's only a matter of time

  • @stevefreakinawesome Well yeah...what i can't figure out is why would you say something like that? Only a matter of time until your generation dies out too! Whisky Tango Foxtrot! You are a freakin mess!

  • @teresajester it will happen but years after your generation that how it works so we can clean your mess

  • this record is a gas!!!!!

  • 1968~~~ACOUSTIC GUITAR LEADING ORCHESTRA!!! Makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up every time I've heard it (since I was 12). Pretty good "pickin'", too!! Thanks so much for this upload!!!! :-)

  • plagerism is what we're built on

  • never say u can't do that if someone else already did it

  • Listen to what he's doing, isn't as difficult as it sounds

  • 8 people like Justin Beiber.

  • @valoguy Yeah, no kidding! It's terrible, huh? :)

  • @dogloverNV Hey, this song's 14 years older than me, but i know talent when I hear. AMAZING!!!!

  • @valoguy Indeed! Justin Bieber SUCKS! Another really awesome group is Electric Light Orchestra, or ELO. That kind of music shames the garbage that the youth of today have to listen to.

  • @dogloverNV, Mr Blue Sky <3

  • @scootbmx01 YEAH! You got it! "Last Train To London" and "Don't Bring Me Down"!

  • @dogloverNV, only herd of Mr Blue Sky but ima go get me some more ELO

  • Cool classic--proud to be Canadian when i hear this on the radio....memories!

  • @sweetgypsy100 lol proud to be canadian :LL im sorry mate but canda is the worlds bitch 1st it was ours and the french now the yanks get a go :L who is next xD

  • thanks so much for posting this! heard it on the great crane robbery on frasier and had to find out what it was called!

  • I remember when Williams played this for the first time on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. Great piece of music. Do you have "Baroque a Nova"? It also charted. I 'd love to hear that one, too.

  • Has anyone heard this on the radio recently?? It took me forever to find this song, what with NOT knowing what it was called. And it has been at least 10 years since I ever heard it on the radio...

  • @TriforceSD

The oldies station in my area plays this frequently.

  • @TriforceSD We've got a couple good rock stations in Chicago. I usually hear it once or twice a summer.

  • great composition,

though I like Tommy Emmanuel's version a LOT better

  • Sir, do u have any idea how fast u were going?

Sorry officer, u see i was listening to classical gas by Mason Williams:)

  • Jim Gordon simply owns this song rhythmically.

  • i just had an orgasm

  • @vikingsownpackers See above :-)

  • @vikingsownpackers *eargasm

  • Acoustic version is just as awesome :>

  • May I recommend the book 'A Pop Revolution, the transatlantic music scene 1965 to 1969' by the invisible man. The author is a big fan of this fine instrumental.

  • You gotta wonder who those 8 peeps are who listened to this track ..... and did NOT like it ????????????

  • @mikkelvolvo Bieber fans who wondered why there was no singing?

  • @brendalg4 HA goodun. I´m a vintage `67 and like Zeppelin and Scottish folk/rock and The Cult but there is an energy and vibrancy and melodious rythm brought out by a man who is a skilled musician. Think of all the modern artists who should weep salty tears of admitted inferiority (miss Spears, miss Carey, and the rest of the suppliers to the cult of mediocraty/shiiite) I agree with vikingsownpackers below. more quality less quantity.

  • @mikkelvolvo feel sorry for the young ones that don't have anything of quality to listen to. Check out Jim Stafford wailing on Classical Gas as well as other songs on the Tonight Show (Johnny Carson) at this link. And while I am at it.. when did talk shows stop being talk shows and simply become a vehicle to promote the newest thing to buy from the artist?

    Jim at..

    watch?v=xdWXo-mMjZk

  • @brendalg4 Jim Stafford. Now you're making the early-mid 70's part of my brain spin!

  • I have loved this song ,,, I love classical guitar.

  • Good but I like Lisa Simpson's version better

  • Positively unique; unequaled in the music industry. Fantastic. Inspirational and contemplative at the same time. You have to invent new adjectives to describe this song.

  • Anyone who 'gets' my next comment, give me a thumbs-up... 'This Is Your Right'. Lol! If you DON'T understand that comment, ask me, and i will explain it... (:o) Either way, i fuckin' love this piece! Always have, always will... (;o) \m/

  • This is SO FUCKING AMAZING!!!

  • "now play classical gas!"

gotta love lenny for bringing me here

  • @wow3214 that's why i'm here :)))

  • @dudeeee76 good taste ;)

  • @wow3214 lenny brought me here 5 minutes ago

  • Frasier brought me here!!!

  • when i downloaded it on itunes, i put it as 5 star, then tried to make it six star, clicked furiously until my mouse broke. honestly, it deserves 7

  • 8 people are tone deaf...

  • this is the original and BEST version of all.

  • This is my phone alarm, <3

  • I have been trying to find this song FOREVER! I love it! Reminds me of my high school days... classic :o)
