it mimicks to get prey(mimics an apparent mate for the sea crab to lure it, etc)and to scare away predators(if it is attacked by a damselfish, it will mimic a sea snake, a predator of the damselfish)
"the mimic octopus can mimic not only the coloration, but the shapes of other animals - no one is quite sure why it does so. Maybe it just likes to amuse itself by confusing the other reef creatures! "
Er ... or maybe its a defense mechanism? Trying to imitate the appearance of predators, so it itself doesn't get attacked/eaten?
A Wunderpus is not similar to a Mimic Octopus, they are different kinds.
Try to make a Wunderpus starting mimickry ( spread your hand e.g.), and you´ll run out of air. Because: it would think ( they are quite bright) "What does he want? I am a Wunderpus and no bloody Mimic!"
But your local dive guide should have told you anyway.
The Wunderpus and the Mimic Octopus are not the same species. A Wonderpus is doing no mimickry (imitating other fish or things).

Thanks bro.

Wunderpus is actually the genus name (Wunderpus photogenicus): I believe it's an alternate spelling.

According to Wikipedia, the scientific name of the mimic octopus is Thaumoctopus mimicus.
DevilMaster 4 years ago 5
That's correct. The Wunderpus has eyelike markings, not stripes
