  • intresting thought o urs.. me deaf all my life.. . deaf people is ok as well same hearing people.. I came from small deaf community which was very laid back very less drama. and i moved went to a BIG community of deaf there were bad deaf crowd good ones > U can invovled yourself if u interst but find the right people ur age ur common interst then u be fine.. I have a hard time with some deaf but reality living in hearing world more than deaf community..cuz im back in small commuity

  • Interesting video. Enter the deaf community at your own risk.

There are battlegrounds among the deaf people who have difference of opinions. Some people cannot handle the fact that other deaf people will not agree with the meaning of 'Deafhood' calling them traitors, self-hating deafies, and more. If you do enter the deaf community on YT, you will see a lot of drama. If you really want to join the deaf community, I would suggest in your local community and meet them in person first. Enjoy!

  • Great job. I am not deaf (or blind) but have been involved with those who are, reading books for Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic and serving on a board that serves the blind community. Get yourself out there and connect with the deaf community! Obviously you are interested and there are ways, including this video, that you could be involved. Any of us could become deaf or blind sometime. You will find deaf friends who can teach you a lot about how to live, as my blind friends have done.

  • I FEEL AWSOME I AM DEAF I AM PART OF IT =3

  • :) i m deaf person and youtube vlogger too and You are more welcome :) Its awesome and very nice of you add CC on your videos :) thank you so much.

  • Hi Tim,

Thank you for providing the captions. Yes, it is possible for a hearing person like you who would like to get involved in our community by taking ASL courses. From there, you will pick up slowly. Yes, it's very challenge for anyone to learn ASL because it's clearly a visual-spatial structure; yet, it's something fun to learn new. Good News is that it is never too late to learn ASL, SMILE!

  • Hello,

I'm glad to see a Hearing person reach out to the Deaf community. It is always ok for Hearing people to be involved in our discussions, as long as you keep an open mind to what we, the Deaf are trying to say and what we want. Remember not to think primarily from how you might feel as a Hearing person, but how things might feel for us as Deaf people living among Hearing people. It would also be good for you to take some courses in Deaf culture, to understand more about us.

  • Nice. I'm hearing too. ';)

Deaf people discuss audism alot amongst themselves and mostly in ASL. I think that most of audism arises from the deaf view not being communicated to the outside world much.

Topics u guys seemed to complain about the most:

    0) people understanding that ASL is your natural language

    1) hearing implants

    2) hearing ppl not knowing how best to communicate with u; most don't know ASL.

  • 2) there are ASL and Deaf culture courses all over the USA. Ill be happy to give you some referrals. It's one of the best ways to show commitment to communicating with Deaf people..and it enriches your life as well.

    3) Thank you for reaching out to us Deaf vloggers in youTube...some of us may be thrilled or willing to dialogue with you, some of us may not have the time, some of us may have other goals for using youTube, so suspend judgement and keep your eyes (and mind) open, smile.

  • Makes sense about the busy part.

I was thinking that when deaf people discuss audism, they should discuss some of their concerns with people that hear?

Ideally our society should be one that we all can enjoy. ;). Most people are not intensionally mean spirited,

  • (part two)

CC is for when u just type English words for what is being said IN English. Written words on video/film that are TRANSLATIONS are called subtitles. Very huge difference in processing & time considerations. So it depends on the target audience we want to share video with to invest time & labor to translate good equivalences from ASL into English.

  • Hello Tim,

I am a Deaf person and a youTube vlogger. I recently retired from teaching American Sign Language and Deaf Culture for 30+ years. I'm active in sharing knowledge about the Deafhood concept and framework. It's impossible to give a complete answer in this small space, but a few starters:

    1) it would be "subtitles" when putting English words with ASL not closed captioning.

  • Hi too

Yes, I heard that ASL is a language by its self

    I`m curuous about it too

  • Hi Tim...I wanted you to know that my heart was blessed to watch your video...it shows that you have a good caring heart. You are more than welcome to join us in dialogues...but be warned that some are heated due to disagreements but we've learned to agree or disagree, in peace...just like the hearing world :-) Best way to learn sign language (ASL) is by communicating in person with us or taking up class with deaf teacher, that's the best...either way. Have a great holiday! God bless you!

  • What sort of things generate heated discussions?

Are they deaf specific or does the Obama deaf guy get mad at the McCain oneÉ

    Welcome too. I`m hearing.

Ì`d like to see the discussion of audism enter the hearing world too. ;)

  • and i just left message for avbria at facebook about your video :)

  • hi, i'm Cheryl from Mass, i just watched ur video at facebook...enjoyed watching u :) and hey sure, welcome to the Deaf community!! everyone is welcome! that's ok if u don't know signing, but u will learn & love it!! thanks very much for your kind words :)

  • I'd like to learn some basic signs too,

enough to remove akwardness or rideness if I met a deaf person in an elevator.

I usually talk to people in elevators ... I feel rude if I cant at least say the basics.

arbia's idea of a bi-lingual education for deaf students? How you feel about that? I'm hearing but i gather it would make sense to have a deaf kid learn ASL as first language. then learn english after?

  • Thanks for pointing this out.

  • I was going to become an interpreter. It's a very unique, interesting and fascinating language with people who quite honestly have their own culture. And depending upon the people involved they often can hold it quite dear to their hearts and thus only allow the hearing population in whom they want. It's not always allowed. BUT others in the deaf community love that we hearing folks want to communicate and learn. I am hoping to do this when I retire. I have two semesters in on a 4 year degree.

  • I am hoping to get it done someday because it's something I too have always wanted to do to learn and appreciate. As I said, it's a very fascinating and can be a somewhat difficult to learn language with it's own vocabulary, syntax and grammar - elements of a true language. But to learn it, is quite freeing actually. Can't be shy speaking that language because it's a whole-body language, very demonstrative and requires no inhibitions when "speaking" it. Very cool Tim. Very cool indeed.

  • Nice.

  • At 2:34, I'd have to say, that maybe some would- maybe some wouldn't. But who's to say you don't belong there? I'm sure different deaf people have different opinions. I wish I knew how to use sign language- it's interesting. Good video, I hadn't really noticed Closed Captioning

  • interesting

  • I know sign language. I havent used it but I would pick it right back up again if I had a reason to. HUGS xooxox

  • My best friend, Jay is deaf. He lost his hearing at 16 due to rheumatic fever. He pretty much lives in a hearing world meaning his wife is hearing and so are most of his friends. The idea of YouTube being CC capable makes me very happy.

  • BTW. Sign is a fun language to learn. Its also VERY expressive. I say pick up a good sign language dictionary, but most importantly, learn to sign the alphabet and practice that daily. That way, you can always spell words out to deaf people in a pinch.

  • 5 stars Tim
