@clubby30 Fans are a very bad idea for any system. Fans blow cold air into you system while the system's fans blow hot air out. Do you know what that's called in nature? A tornado. You don't want that in your system.

Just today I was playing Gran Turismo 5 when my system shut off, beeped 4 or 5 times, and did not display the yellow light. I turned it back on immediately after to retrieve the disc.. @1994Nuts ps3 never really overheats enough for the tempreture to turn it off as the fans only ever really needs to go at 25% of its max speed
but if you look closely at your ps3 when its turns its self off and you have a little yellow flash of light behind the red light then you have the YOLD (yellow light of death) which will render it useless very soon and you will either need it repaired or replaced
but i your house is just a sauna then i suggest getting an fan stand and enuff room 4 vents
I have a PS3 SLim 250gb , and it was so overheating , you could not put you're hand behind it , so i put it away from a wall ( 20cm enough ) and i took ceramic plate , and i put under it , now it does not overheat , do it , save you're ps3 :)
i drilled holes on the bottom mine where th fan sits so it could draw in cooler air. the fan is sealed and only pushes air out it cannot draw any outer air in as he mother board sits on top of it and the other side faces the bottom and the front is sealed off. so i drilled small holes around where the fan sits now you can feel it pull air in even hold a piece of paper, you can definitly feel the difference on the top of the unit.
the ps3 only overheats or brakes when the owner abuses it. Also its always good to have a small home fan or filter fan that you plug in the room just to Coagulat/clean the air in the room it helps cool down the room a little so that your tv computer ps3 xbox and wii stays healthy

Since I kicked it, its never overheated. Be sure to kick it more towards the left side of it as the right side is more solid and you can hurt your foot. Well i've had a severe problem where my online froze an i then turned it back on, since then i can't load games no more and after several minutes my screen starts coming up with green bubbles all over the screen an then completely crashes the system i've had it sent to sony an they don't know the problem and the same with shops i've sent it to, to get it checked out. a little info for you here the orginal 40gb ps3 doesnt cool out the backside of the unit they pull air from the front and rear and discharge it through the right side so that it is compatible with the vertical stand...keeping your A/C on might help but ps3's get very hot not matter the temp esp. with on-line play. i built intercoolers for mine with their own power supplies using 12v fans and have managed to never have a disc get above room temp
it's so easy to keep your PS3 or PS3 slim safe! Just vacuum the vents every day if you play more than 3 hours a day, or every week if you play under that!

@MichaelGray66 cuz red dead is a very heavy game that requires ur ps3 to have lots of air around it. becuz if ur ps3 is in a non-ventilated area, the ps3 will overheat and hav problems.
GOW 3, Uncharted 2, and MW2 make my fans kick on like crazy, i also cleaned the inside of it and it still kicks on like a blow dryer, and it's ventilated, hope i don't get ylod soon.
I should add that I played Call of Duty WaW with my friends for 4 hours after ejecting Red Dead and the fans not only shut off but they never turned back on again! In my opinion Red Dead is overwhelming the fans by overworking the processor. BTW, my hard drive was not affected as it was returned by repair intact and I had the blinking red light. While swapping out the hard drive might work for some it didn't work for me as that was the first thing I tried.
My PS3 overheated after playing Red Dead Redemption about 3-4 hours a day in a 2 week period. I've had my PS3 for over 2+ years and have never heard the fans (even after playing Fallout 3 for over 250 hours!) until I played Red Dead. The unit shut off mid-game, the light flashed yellow, and then the unit locked up. I shipped it off for repair & when I got it back I threw in Red Dead and in 5 minutes the fans were back on! IMy conclusion is that Red Dead killed my PS3!
@blackpony04 man don't think that red dead redemtpion ruined your ps3. i play it every day for 4 hours straight and everything is fine.but where i put it in my room i turn on the air conditionner every time before i play on my ps3 to make sure it doesn't overheat or something.try that and believe me you won't have any more problems.my room is 19 degree celcius cold so no overheating problems.
You can quickly fix the PS3 by carefully re-setting the drive. In order to do this, you need to take out the hard drive and then once out, replace inside the PS3 the same way. Usually this is the answer to the Ps3 blinking red light problem. If the red light does not go away by applying thus method, you will have to get a new drive or in some cases a new PS3, ouch!

STANDING is scientifically and technically BETTER.
Heat is like water with anti gravity, imagine filling the ps3 up with water upside down opposed to poring it through the side vents.
As with concerning discs, the ps3 will not even TOUCH your disc standing up, I have had all my ps3 games with not even a single itsy bitsy scratch for over 9 month's. 360 will scratch your discs, standing up, but trust your ps3 because I can say it will NOT.
Not to mention it is recommended to keep the PS3 standing opposed to sitting, the top chamber will accumulate heat and the fan will have to work harder to push it out, if that heat rises out just like smoke(standing), then it would stay cool.
Keep it standing and do us a favor drop the YLOD rate by a ton.

Continuing.. Read my earlier comment. Yeah, anyway the ps3 makes a "bzz" sound now and then, very weak. My guessing is that it is reading the cd, but when it was new (the console is now 6 months old) I can swear I did NOT heard those sounds when playing my first game, Fight Night Round 4. Hey my ps3 overheated yesterday when I was playing Red Dead Redemption, and then just automatically shutted down. Damn, I thought it crashed, but I let it cool down for a while, then restarted it and it went on just fine! BUT! I am worried, though, that I will get the yellow light of death soon. i have the 40 gb i got it about the time modern warfare 1 came out and im playin a game of mw2 and after it ends the game just freezes aeverytime a game ends it freezes same thing on cod4 i havent tried bfbc2 or anything else but my brother was watching a dvd and it just froze up. any ideas?

My ps3 was on for 5 hours straight playing games the whole time and then randomly during BFBC2, The fan span up to max speed and I pannicked and turned my ps3 off. Has it just overheated?? coz if it has then Im going out and buying a cooling fan for it coz im not havin tht happenin to me again, I nearly shat myself! I was like WTF!?!?!?! and I just turned it off sooo fucking quick! XD

Well i've had a severe problem where my online froze an i then turned it back on, since then i can't load games no more and after several minutes my screen starts coming up with green bubbles all over the screen an then completely crashes the system i've had it sent to sony an they don't know the problem and the same with shops i've sent it to, to get it checked out. So does anyone have any suggestions the only thing new to it was the update patch that sony themselves released

a little info for you here the orginal 40gb ps3 doesnt cool out the backside of the unit they pull air from the front and rear and discharge it through the right side so that it is compatible with the vertical stand...keeping your A/C on might help but ps3's get very hot not matter the temp esp. with on-line play. i built intercoolers for mine with their own power supplies using 12v fans and have managed to never have a disc get above room temp

it's so easy to keep your PS3 or PS3 slim safe! Just vacuum the vents every day if you play more than 3 hours a day, or every week if you play under that!

my room is pretty cold , my ps3 has alot of room and is next to the window, i lay it upwards and sideways sometimes but neither ways make a difference. i have a usb fan too at the front, my ps3 turns off within a few minutes any other suggestions?

@MichaelGray66 cuz red dead is a very heavy game that requires ur ps3 to have lots of air around it. becuz if ur ps3 is in a non-ventilated area, the ps3 will overheat and hav problems.

I should add that I played Call of Duty WaW with my friends for 4 hours after ejecting Red Dead and the fans not only shut off but they never turned back on again! In my opinion Red Dead is overwhelming the fans by overworking the processor. BTW, my hard drive was not affected as it was returned by repair intact and I had the blinking red light. While swapping out the hard drive might work for some it didn't work for me as that was the first thing I tried.

My PS3 overheated after playing Red Dead Redemption about 3-4 hours a day in a 2 week period. I've had my PS3 for over 2+ years and have never heard the fans (even after playing Fallout 3 for over 250 hours!) until I played Red Dead. The unit shut off mid-game, the light flashed yellow, and then the unit locked up. I shipped it off for repair & when I got it back I threw in Red Dead and in 5 minutes the fans were back on! IMy conclusion is that Red Dead killed my PS3!

You can quickly fix the PS3 by carefully re-setting the drive. In order to do this, you need to take out the hard drive and then once out, replace inside the PS3 the same way. Usually this is the answer to the Ps3 blinking red light problem. If the red light does not go away by applying thus method, you will have to get a new drive or in some cases a new PS3, ouch!

FYI to all the PS3 owners.
STANDING is scientifically and technically BETTER.
Heat is like water with anti gravity, imagine filling the ps3 up with water upside down opposed to poring it through the side vents.
As with concerning discs, the ps3 will not even TOUCH your disc standing up, I have had all my ps3 games with not even a single itsy bitsy scratch for over 9 month's. 360 will scratch your discs, standing up, but trust your ps3 because I can say it will NOT.

Not to mention it is recommended to keep the PS3 standing opposed to sitting, the top chamber will accumulate heat and the fan will have to work harder to push it out, if that heat rises out just like smoke(standing), then it would stay cool.
Keep it standing and do us a favor drop the YLOD rate by a ton.

Continuing.. Read my earlier comment. Yeah, anyway the ps3 makes a "bzz" sound now and then, very weak. My guessing is that it is reading the cd, but when it was new (the console is now 6 months old) I can swear I did NOT heard those sounds when playing my first game, Fight Night Round 4. Or is it maybe depending on how big the actual game is, how much the ps3 cpu has to load... or? Frustrating, maybe I'm just imagine these things. Please help, does you ps3 make sounds? when reading a cd?

Hey my ps3 overheated yesterday when I was playing Red Dead Redemption, and then just automatically shutted down. Damn, I thought it crashed, but I let it cool down for a while, then restarted it and it went on just fine! BUT! I am worried, though, that I will get the yellow light of death soon. I guess anyone could get that problem. I have a question. When I now play the game, the ps3 make strange sounds when it has the cd inside, like a "bzz" sound. Is something wrong?
