The last surviving humans from the end of time, they transfered their consciousnessees into little machines in an attempt to escape the darkness at the death of the universe. The Master discovered them when he stole the Doctor's TARDIS and brought them to Earth's present. In the process, they went insane and became devoted to the Master.

Excellent. That was definitly the best season finale, as it incorporates the whole universe, not just earth, so it was even more important for the Doctor to win.
