I have a 2011 Golf Plus with a BluMotion 110hp Diesel Engine. (-turbo kicks in late)

It takes 5,5l/100km average City/Highway mix.

I guess that's around 43mpg. (5l/47mpg easily possible if try)

Before, my 2009 model (regular 110hp diesel) took 6l/100km - 39mpg.

I never sat in a Prius so I can't compare. But I don't like the way people are "comparing" the cars. ("This one sucks, mine's better...balls, power, bla...")

If you have driven both cars then you can compare - write pro's and con's EACH.

damn, i still cant imagine what mpg means, we in europe for example (except for GB) count the fuel consumtion in liters consumed on a trip of 100km

so 1 mile are 1,6 km and 1 gallon are 4,5 liters

once i tried to reach something under 4l/100km inside vienna. possible without traffic jams, according to my boardcomputer (and if you really try to).

does somebody know an easy way to work it out what 50mpg means in liters/100km?

my calculation: 4liters /100km are about 70,3 mpg?i think its not right

@ViennaShuffleZ depends on what kind of gallon you refer too. us gallon is about 4 litres, while UK gallon is about 5 litres.

the easiest way is to go to a british versions of car company's homepage, they show both the MPG and litres / 100km for various models.

@ttr0Oper ummm no you do not know what you are talking about. VW does not make reliable cars. Diesels are also more expensive to run because diesel is more expensive than regular gasoline. And most of VW cars dont even look that great, the current redesigns are boring and the interiors have gone down in quality. If only they brought Audi's great looks to their vehicles. The 3rd gen prius still looks better.

@myNEONCITY i drove a lot of TDI's from VW and was never disappointed. I know they had some troubles with 2.0 TDI. And i also agree, they are more expensive to run... if you're making less 20.000 miles per year. And about the design...yes, it's boring, but i am buying a car not a shape and to me, they really don't look so bad

@dvdk87 what's the point in comparing a diesel car with a petrol one. can u crack petroleum into 100% diesel? if u can then the Jetta TDi is better than a Prius else the commericial is so misleading. imagine everyone buying a diesel car. All the petrol obtained from cracking would be useless. this would result in losses to oil compnies which will push the prices of diesel to so high just to counter the losses on petrol. question - will the diesel demand be met everyone had a diesel car?

unfortunately, diesel fumes are about 50 % worse for the environment and much worse for human health than gasoline fumes.. so it should be 50 times as efficient to even compare. obviously they don't tell u that though.....

This will probably be thumbs downed on a pro VW video, but this video makes the silence sound like it is a bad thing. The low noise is easily my favourite feature of a hybrid!

Also, debating words: A diesel might shine on the highway, but a hybrid will still dominate fuel economy city traffic. Since most of my driving is city I'd prefer a hybrid. Though I will be getting neither a hybrid or diesel until my Yaris bites the dust in a long, long time.

@blphnx it does not get upwards of 50MPG unless you drive slow like an asshole. The rating is 30 city and 41 highway. If i drive slow in my Prius I get more than 65MPG.

@myNEONCITY There are MANY reports from owners who have reported getting over 50mpg in this car, and I too have seen this personally that's why I even bothered to give props to this car... it is amazing... and Your Prius has no BALLZ... This car however... Germany engineering and has plenty of get up and go while being one of the most fuel efficient despite being fully gas powered vehicles available... that's the point.

I hate it when people think they are so cool because they drive a car with "balls", umm first off, no your not, and second, a Jetta still doesn't have enough balls because an average family sedan has a lot more power while still getting good fuel economy. Oh, and along with a Prius it has more room. And maybe amazing is too much of a word for the car. The fuel economy is great, but the car its self is lackluster, along with a lot of VW diesels.

@blphnx That car however, having "German Engineering" is not good. German made/designed vehicles are not reliable, and a lot of VW's lately have been given cheap interiors and boring styling. Sure the car has more get up and go, but what's the point of having the power that it does(not that much) on normal roads. My Prius does fine when merging and passing, and I think the new one looks a hell of a lot better than what VW has been putting out lately. Just saying.
