I added about 3 large spoons of dry custard powder (vanilla flavor) to water instead, and then used that in place of coffee-water. & I skipped cocoa. Just in case your batter looks too lose cuz you skipped dry ingredient part of cocoa - u can add upto (not more than) couple table spoonfuls (3 at max) of flour. I didn't need to & custard totally upped flavor. Hope that helps!

@blackuredtube well, there is 1%, 2%, fat free, and whole milk. there are sections in markets like Safeway devoted to the different types of milk. It will always say if it is on the carton

@matildecottone something i learnt recently is that you can make ur own sour cream. just buy normal fresh cream from the store , add in some buttermilk( yoghurt beaten with water) and leave overnight and voila !!! u get sour cream !!! hope this helps coz it did help me !!

@ScreamitsShirley I never use Sour Cream myself, its waaaay to high in fat - I always use a low-fat or fat-free greek yoghurt and it turns out perfect. You could also substitute a normal natural yoghurt as well.

@sunbakedglory Try adding a small table spoon of flour when you add the eggs. The separation is just the reaction of the proteins and fats and won't effect the outcome of the cake, when you add the flour it will all come together so don't throw your mixture away.
@sunbakedglory sounds to me like the butter was to cold and did not cream with the remaining ingredients. When the butter is not soft it usually doest turn out like that, it separates from the rest of the ingredients. Try the recipe again with the butter at room temperature and i bet it will make a big difference. :)
