I love the brass, it sounds like the begining of a TV western like Pondarosa, I was a freshman in high school when this came out and everybody was shakin theit booties when the ban covered this little number.
Im mexican & white and I love this song!! I grew up listening to my parents music as a kid in the 80s and I still love it now.. But Ive been told Ive got Soul lol It is my favorite music and this song always made me wanna dance!!! Still does!!! :)
You really have to respect someone who will sing about other musicians and not trash them. This was back when music meant something and wasnt just reputation
Sorry, but this is not a video of Arthur Conley, its The Sam & Dave show in Germany, and that is Sam or Dave, cant see his face too much, but its not Arthur.
I was 14, imagine, its all i grew up with. This song was never played, all night at the dance, until 12:00 this is how da dance ended EVERY friday night with Arthur Conelys Sweet Soul Music, we went crazy...what a life damn, it was good!
How can u not keep yr body from moving to this beat. Arthur is having a blast rocking his hit live. God bless the '50's & the '60's for all this great music they generated.
It still wasn't that common to let go, those days, but they got the best example of how to do that, from Mr. Conley! You see how it works, in the end.
@mweezy - Musicians get tired of singing the exact same over and over - they ab-lib. I don't blame them..... I'd go crazy concert after concert singing things like the studio version. I've heard several artists explain it before in there own words. As Eric Burdon said: "If you don't like it - go buy the record".
This is a great performance of a great tune!...and about the audience: they look a lot better than the shit-bag dancing by those wonderbreads that opened up the Winter Olympics!
@efsq FUCK YOU CUNT, IM WHITE AND FUCKING PROUD OF IT TOO, PERSONALLY I THINK THIS SONG IS FUCKING EXCELLENT AND IF I WAS ALIVE BACK THEN, AND WAS THERE IN THAT CROWD I,D BE ROCKING THE FUCK OUT MORE THAN ANY CUNT THERE, INCLUDING ALL THE BLACKS PUT TOGETHER. SO FUCK YOU, YOU "DAMN FUCKER"
@efsq HEY friend easy with the white people shit, yes they do look brain dead with as much rythm as a pool cue but dont bring the WHITE thing in man we are all BLUES BROTHERS PEACE MY MAN
Look at that audience they look like they came from a funeral, if I am not mistake they are German which is typical for German audiences. They should have been playing marching music then they would have been up on their feet goose stepping. This is the only type of music they are capable of clapping too. Authur you were great, unfortunately the audience was the personificatin of boredom. RIP brother, you really had the feeling.
No moonwalk, but those are definitely James Brown movements. All the artist at that time were influenced by James Brown. With respect to a white audience you could very well be right.
Ich mag den Song! Da ist echt Party Time! Kenne ich noch als kleines Kind als meine Eltern das immer gehört haben. Die kleine LP bewahre ich gut auf - wird bestimmt mal was Wert sein :)
Yeah, ive known the man personally before he died, through my uncle who is in the music business here in the netherlands. Even though i was only 13 when he died i remember having a lot of good laughs with him. A really great man and i miss him, but his funeral was amazing. RIP Lee ( he changed his name later in his life) / Arthur
Well you haven't actually met me, so how about you stop poluting this video's comments with your shite, learn how to type and appreciate the music, and if you don't like the music, piss off!
i dont think there are an live act like this any more the coriography the music the pure and true enthusiasm of a man singing for his soul not his wallet
Viewing Arthur Conley in his younger years, as in this video makes me wish that the hands of time could really be turned back. i would love to have met Arthur. Arthur was 11 years older than me at the time of this video. He had moved to the Netherlands, a beautiful county in his early 30's. I was in my early twenties. He was such a handsome man. I cannot believe that I long, and am slightly disturbed that I had no chance of meeting him. He was deceased when I discovered him in 2008, on Youtube.
@RobertEarl20 The reason why it is credited to Sam Cooke is because "Sweet Soul Music" is based on Sam Cooke's song, "Yeah Man", so I think Mr. Cooke is well deserving of being credited. I heard Mr. Conley denied that he got it from Sam Cooke's song but later admitted that he did. It is a great song though, he changed the lyrics around a bit but it's pretty obvious he copied from "Yeah Man".
That's true for any live band, EXCEPT James Brown's Famous Flames. From what I hear, if anyone played a bad note, he'd turn around and point at him, and no-one ever got pointed at twice.
@rickiedog He would also not pay them for the whole month! There is a recording of The Grunt (live), and you can hear the brass section playing wrong, and then you can hear them getting afraid; the miss a cue right after. The quickly begin playing again though, and carry on with the same energy.

In baptist church's you got up and you "Got the feeling" (in black churches anyway)
40 years ago young white kids (Mostly in Europe I think) liked what they heard but didn't know how to get with it.., that why the audiance looks stiff.. but you can see they were loving it.
One of the best live performances i have ever seen....wish i was in the crowd watching that....would have been jumping around like mad lol! Brilliant!
I'm Dutch aswell, and can tell U all one thing,I wasnt born in those days, but if there is somethin Called Music, then its this, same goes for Sam Cooke,Sam and Dave,Otis redding, and if i see the Audience it hurts me,i know that back in that day the Movement from the "whites" was pretty much nihil, but if i hear this it makes me wanna JUMP and do all kinds of crazy stuff ;-)
Does anybody know why the big air instrument players do that side to side? Is it keeping a rhythm, showmanship, something else?
