  • Oh, man! Awesome demonstration! I'm so glad I found this, totally subscribing to your channel. Great variety of style and sound. I thought only jexus(W.C. Olo Garb) was making worthwhile synth demos, check out his youtube channel if you don't know who I'm talking about.

  • Crikey! What a beauty mate!

  • So Sweet, So Warm, So Brilliant, So Phatt! Thank you for offering your videos to the world my friend!

  • Man, that sounds so good! I just bought one on FEEBAY for $2,000 which included a Oberheim DX drum machine. Both units play and sound wonderfully!!! All I need now is the DSX sequencer!

I think they usually go for around $200 when you can find them. Thanks for the inspiration!

  • PHAT!!!!!!!

  • Don't get me wrong, I love the fact I can make music on a Mac / PC and not much else.......it's great. And yet if I had the dosh to buy old classics like this baby..........I STILL would! It's so FAT sounding.......

  • what was that last tune you were playing at 5:55? its so beautiful!

  • @SmallFish616 It's just my improvisation

  • This sounds SO much better than your Prophet 5 video. I think of the OB as the quintessential synth sound by which all others are judged ;)

  • does somebody knows a good (analog) synth that can give me that phat, detuned ob-8 sound?

  • Shit! my eyes have been opened to the undeniable beauty of the OB sound.

Fuck a Prophet 5. If you can only have one, this is THE vintage polysynth to own

  • from 5.20 onwards :D:D

i love that detuned sound... My OBX power supply died so i am building another one. Until then it's youtube to hear powerful Oberheim sounds :)

    Thanks for uploading.

  • I assume it is how you recorded it, and what youtube did with the compression, but this has to be the only video I've heard that makes the OB-8 sound thin. Definitely a disservice to the beast.

  • The "typical '80s melody" I play is probably from P. Lion's "Happy Children". I grew up in Italy and that song was heavily played at parties in my teenager years, during the Synth Pop / Italo Dance era... so it was probably stuck in my subconscious when I played that synth line in the OB-8 demo

  • @SynthManiaDotCom 2:10 Prince-Computer Blue

  • MY GOD. I had the OB-X back in the day, the cheaper and more difficult to work with version of this and it's nice to see someone who could deal with so much awesome from one machine.

  • i have one, in flawless condition. I am the first owner of this fine instrument, and it has been in its box for 99% of its life. looking at selling it if anyone is interested.

  • I want the song you did at 5.40 lol!!!

    Beautiful sounding synth.

  • question : what kinds of oberheim did dennis deyoung use during his tenure in Styx??

  • you are an excellent keyboard player man, are you a professional musician? the melody at 4:35 is outstanding, if you improvised it then that's impressive.

  • i have this model forsale i got it in philippines used to belong to toto used it for long time but now just need to see it go to a good home

  • What would be the price and shipping to Europe???

  • What's the name of the patch at 3:53 ?

    Just wondering...

  • 0:28 sounds like you're about to play 'i remember'

  • very good.

    beautiful

  • i ALWAYS wanted an oberheim synth......

  • i love the song at star of video, anyone have the name of the song? thanks

  • The vaguely drum 'n bass thing at the very start of this video? It is simply the "SynthMania Theme", created by me. It's a short intro that I put together a few years ago to be used as bumper in my videos. If I remember correctly, I used Propellerhead Reason for the 303-style bass, the classic Amen breakbeat for the drumloop, the Roland D-50's preset 47 "Spacious Sweep" for the synth, and little else.

  • Does the ob8 have a built in sequencer?

If so, is it easy to use?

I'd love to have one of these!

    5 stars

  • No sequencer but it does have an arpeggiator.

  • 4:23 <3

  • Beautiful analog sound... indeed!

  • i wish my dad kept his xpanders from the 80s he had two, i would have endless fun messing with them

  • This post killed me...

OB8 was a dream in the 80s for me and now is even more...

comparing it to current digital equipment is like comparing a woman in flesh and blood vs an inflatable doll... :)

thanks a mill for the demo!

  • Thanks so much for posting! I'm considering buying one of these things, but i wanted to know how the action is on them, i've gone through a few synths just because of of crappy action. Anyone watching this video, give me your thoughts on the action! thanks

  • the keyboard action is great i think. no worries of bushes degrading etc. the obxa i did keep. they are both nice.

  • Wow.

That '80s part in the end must have been one of the best demonstration of an analogue synth on youtube that I've seen.

  • I agree. I want to hear more of that..

  • oh man, do i want to get one of these, hahahaha

  • I own one of these and i go to it first before any of my newer synths when i write. Too bad it got stubborn on stage a few times, now i only use it in studio. Great synth to learn programming on if you can afford one. Run it through an effects processor to create some interesting sonic soundscapes

  • If done correctly, you can apply these sounds to today's genre with no difficulty.

  • oh my man does anyone know if you can get the software for MAC? without buying NI reactor?

IS any company in the process of developing the vST???

  • Hey hey hey now, you're acting like being in a 1980's is some kind of a bad thing. Shame shame. ;)

Great vid, and I really hope to see more.

  • i had an ob-8 for about a year, with page 2 on panel, factory midi etc, and sold it at a hefty profit, simply cause it was quite temperamental EVEN after a good poke around by one of the best techs in the business

  • That's REALLY cool!! I think you're the first person here to use the pitch bend and modulation sticks on these things!

I guess you cranked the portamento on that sound?? That was HUGE!

  • I'm always wondering, why it seems almost impossible to create virtual synthesizers, that have that special kind of POWER in their sound. VSTi's always sound too precise and clean, even when they are using interpolation or some kind of "random pitch drift" to emulate certain old school VCO/VCF/VCA characteristics. Maybe it has something to do with the D/A converters of the PC audio interface/soundcard. Does anyone know?

  • Your AD/DA conversion is extremely important! It's the heart and soul of studio. On the other hand VSTs will never sound like an analog synth due to many factors. There are some really nice virtual analog synths, but they tend to be more spendy, and cpu hungry.

  • cool a real synthesizer. so much fake stuff on here!

  • Nothing beats the old machines.

I owned a OBXa years ago. VST´s are toys

    compared with this analog dreams.
