Trying to stomach my way through Sir Elton's sappy vocals on "The Union," his long overdue tribute to and with Leon Russell. He broke my heart when he stopped signing and playing like this. Adored "Tumbleweed Connection". Afraid the Texan in me will never forgive him.
Most people don't realize it, but Gus Dudgeon deserves a lot of the credit for the way Elton sounded back in the 70's. Elton didn't habg around in the studio for much more than laying down the vocal and piano tracks. Most of the amazing shit on these albums were Gus's doing.
@FRANCECHILD Self-righteous nanny talk doesn't work too well. Peddle this twaddle where it's actually relevant - instead of automatically pasting political slogans on each of the the zillions of vids that come up in a YouTube search for "gun". Jackass.
BTW, a gun kept my 7-year-old daughter from having to watch a violent criminal literally murder her father on the side of the road....with an unregistered shovel. I'm proof of the truth: GUNS STOP CRIMINALS FROM STEALING FAMILY.
@FRANCECHILD Right you are - He liked swords: "Think not that I am come to bring peace on earth: I came not to bring peace, but a sword." Matthew 10:34.
Try sticking some more of your words in Jesus's mouth.
From elton john to before victim of love, anything with Bernie was purely magical period.......say as you want, i fucking don't care....Taup was/is a great lyricist and elton on the music was purely a match made for great music......
Yeah! Back when guitar players, songwriters and bands had talent, simple gear, lots of taste and a damned good time. One of the best Elton tunes and a rock classic. Elton's talented phase ended with Honky Chateau. Many gems from the Brits in this era.
@yodhe With all due respect, not only no, but Hell No, I've said it before, allow me to restate it, in my humble opinion "Tumbleweed Connection" was Elton and Bernie's finest hour, I implore you, please go back and listen to it for the first time! All concerned in its production were musically on the same page!
Yeah this the EJ that was real deal. This music is worth something, full of soul and clearly influenced by r&b, rockabilly, blues, country and gospel. It's such a shame EJ didn't have the good sense to either quit recording or just die after, say, "Honky Chateau".
Hey, c'mon! If he had died then, we wouldn't have had "Captain Fantastic" and the greatest end song to an album "Curtains." But I do agree that his later 70s through now music is missing some serious edge to it.
Meh, I don't get jazzed by CF, or "Curtains", which seems like one of the fist songs in the Tin Pan Alley torch song style which EJ has mined for the last 30+ years. I like to remember EJ the bluesy r&b rock and roller, not Mr. Champagne and Strawberries.
@redsfanstu For me it's TC & Madman. 11-17-70 was my 1st EJ, quickly followed by the fantastic TC. I was mesmerized by the unusual melodies & harmonies, and surprised by the offbeat lyrics. What tremendous promise early EJ and BT showed. Put EJ's work up until '73 up against EVERYTHING he's done in the last 35 years or so, & it's like listening to two entirely different people - the later stuff can't touch the early work. EJ & BT were burned out by 74-75, but loved the mega-$ too much to stop.

I think this was one of his VERY BEST. I think after Cpt Fantastic, we lost the good EJ and BT stuff.

I always thought that this was the best mixed album that anybody ever made. Maybe the 1970 album 'Jesus Christ Superstar' too.

This is Elton Johns best albumn hands down, thanks to Bernie Taupin, who co-wrote with Elton. It's the only one of his I ever bought.

Tremendous tune by a pre-Disney Elton.
Heard a great live version by the Prisoners of 2nd Ave, Jimmy Vivino's band ( from Conan's show)
