  • Great men on both sides of this terrible conflict knew they were involved in something that was going to make history. This war, for all the supposed glory and gallantry displayed by these valiant men, was the most disgraceful, insidious, and darkest chapter in the history of this nation. It was a wholesale slaughter of Americans by Americans. This is a beautiful and moving montage you have put together. It is a memorial to all of these people who live on only in these images. A Proud Southerner

  • Ive been to Gettysburg twice now and was told that we would try and make it an every year trip. Gettysburg is a beautiful place. I live not far from there and would like to move there. I love Gettysburg and the people there so nice. I don't think there could be any better of a town here in Pennsylvania than Gettysburg. Thank you so much. :)

  • Having been at Gettysburg, I can tell you it is a very powerfull place where psychic impressions of the battle still linger on the land. It seems the land will not really ever heal. Having walked the path of Pickett's charge, it amazes me that any group of men ever made could have even reached the bloody angle with the amount of artillery and massed fire they were up against. War may be testament to the evil in man but Gettysburg is a testament to mankind's courage, dignity, will, perseverence.

  • @heartfire451 Well said.

  • I can't seem to finish this video. I always break into tears whenever I hear the letter of Sullivan Balue to his beloved wife, Sarah. His love of country and family is unmatched. ....It is a love letter that even Shakespear could not have written

  • Wonderful video. Have made many trips to Gettysburg over the years. On more than one occasion have been brought to tears thinking of what occurred there. Have often thought of the courage and honor those brave men showed and question how I would have measured up under those circumstances.

  • Thousands were lost on both sides. Evil was present leading up to the War,during and after.Being the beginning of what is now the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, it's certainly not a celebration of who did what in the form of destruction. I's a memorial of what tore this country apart and what had to be done to make it whole again. In the year 2011, there are still countries out there who have yet to become whole again.

  • My great grandfather was with the 27th Virginia at Gettysburg, his cousin William died there, his bother William at Winchester, imprisoned at Fort Delaware paroled at Appomattox. I see no difference in the Northern Victory and what would have happened if Britain had won the Revolutionary War. Our farm burned by Sheridan two of his children died of malnutrition and fever. Long Live Dixie

  • I do reenactments there. CSA when im older i wanna move to Gettysburg. thats if the economy gets better

  • Sullivan was one very brave American

  • Listening to these songs makes me feel at peace. I went to Gettysburg this year and I was there from July 2nd-4th. Walking around the battlefield and seeing all the memorials is overwhelming. I could get a sense of what those brave fellows felt way back then on those 3 very long days.

  • The love of country and the love of a wife is truly captured in "the letter at 3 minutes 25 seconds by Sullivan Balue". It is so beautifully written. Each word touches my heart. Each phrase moves me to tears...

  • just got back from Gettysburg , my 1st visit.. awesome.. rode horses thru the battlefield.. if you havent been, its worth the trip.. we drove from GA.. and back home to to tornado destruction the next street over. Cherokee Valley Road. We lost 7 neighbors.. very humbling ....

  • this is my town GETTYSBURG

  • @mikeduxbury Dixie forever. Deo Vindice.

  • @NYLADY13601 Very, VERY, well said. Great vid as well.

  • This is my favorite quote of Chamberlain's, it gives me chills every time I read it.

  • @mikeduxbury True, the northern armies were often barbaric.

  • @KnightOwl2006 southern armies were too.

  • BRAVO to you on the video! May the heritage, the descendants of those on both sides come together and be united. After all, there is common cause. . . . .signed, Mayflower, Revolution, Civil (both sides), Spanish Amer., WW1, WW2. . . join together brothers of the heritage. May all have the resolve of Sullivan toward Sarah.

  • Hi NYL: A beautifully done, touching video--and the epigraph, that quote from Chamberlain, is perfectly chosen. Re the comment: 'The South will rise again!' When people say that, I always wonder just what exactly it is that they mean Of course, the South rose up from its ashes of destruction--but are the speakers of such a sentiment implying, for nostalgic or other reasons, that they wish the pre-war ideology of the South to rise again as well?

  • We ALL lost our bravest men but we gained keeping our country together and was able to move forward in life. Being stronger for it and learning a hard lesson.

At the end of my video is a photo from the 50th reunion of the Battle of Gettysburg, the Northern and Southern men, at the Angle and shaking hands. What's done is done.

  • "The triumphs of might are transient, they pass and are forgotten. The sufferings of right are graven deepest on the chronicle of nations"Sic semper tyrannis!

  • Hi. I live here in Gettysburg. This was an excellent video. We who live here tend to take for granted all that happened here. The words of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young come to mind..."Find the cost of freedom buried in the ground. Mother earth will swallow you, lay your body down. Thankyou, NYLADY, I will treasure this video.

  • I'm glad you think so highly of my video, it's good to know so many people have enjoyed this. The making of this video was well worth the time and effort. I think Gettysburg is a great town. The local people I met were all so friendly and welcoming.

  • I hope to visit someday from nz

  • This is a very moving tribute to the heroes, soldier & civilian, of the war between the states.

    Beautifully done, Thank You

  • thank you

  • God Bless the Republic!

  • Ive been to Gettysburg every year for the past 30 years-sometimes twice. Its a magnet for me. Thank you for posting this. My special place is on Culps Hill. Near the 66th Ohio Monument. Again-Thank you.

  • When I was making this video, I had no idea I would get so many wonderful responses. I was simply making this video for my mom since she has a great interest in the Civil War. It was also my own trip to Gettysburg which really touched me deeply. I had my own reaction in the Wheatfield one gray and rain drizzling day. It was such a sad and lonely feeling though I didn't want to leave. Again, thank you all for your warming responses.

  • Gettysburg is such a spiritual place truely hollowed ground. This past June I watched the sunset from the Peace Memorial. Looking south toward the round tops, with the valley where so much of the 1st day was fought was so beautiful. I saw the beauty but must not forget the bravery, agony, terror, and all of those things happend there. Thank you for this video.

  • I am nearing 60,and have gone to Gettysburg as a kid every year from CT.,and taken my kids nearly every year. We have bricks at Lincoln Square in my parents names, and at the Tillie Oierce House. But sitting in the Wheatfield next to the Irish Brigade Wolfhound Celtic Cross is my most favourite spot. Your selections here are very heartening to me,and put a premium on the value of the heroes and history of this solemn place. Thank you for providing...Rich.

  • karlschlaussen

Thank you for honoring our heroes. I sat on Little Round Top and could feel the presence of my great grandfather struggling up the hill.

Very moving to say the least.

  • On a battlefield with no shortage of honorable and brave men, two of the best were Robert E. Lee and Joshua Chamberlain. It's humbling to realize how unworthy I am of that which men like them passed on to me.

Thank you for putting the video on here.

  • Thank you for your comments. And I have to agree with you about Joshua Chamberlain as one of the best those three days. He and his troops protected Little Round Top with the odds against them.

  • Thank you. A few years ago, I became friends with a reenacter who had been involved in the movie, Gettyesburg. At the time that the movie was made there were more men on "the field" than had been there at any one time since that day in 1863.

For Pickett's Charge, they needed even the Union reenactors to dress and move as part of the charge so he was part of the line.

He said as they moved across the field and felt the "presence of those spirits," almost all were in tears.

  • I've walked that field myself, from the Confederate batteries on Seminary Ridge, across the bloody Emmitsburg Road, right up the marker where Armistead fell on one of Lt. Cushing's guns. Its a place of memory, a place where history is very much alive. I remember one night after sitting on the Cemetary Ridge, and you can feel the power of the place. Gettysburg ranks as my favorite place to visit. I could go 1000 times and still enjoy it on 1001st time I went.

  • Thank you so much for making this video. I have been to Gettysburg many times and like you, I fell in love with the history and natural beauty of the area. It is my favorite Civil War battlefield. I have taken my kids there and they as adults want to go again. Thanks again for a job well done.

  • Your video is so beautiful. I call Gettysburg home...the beautiful country side of rolling hills..is the birth place of my father who is now 99 years old. His legacy is here..as is mine. In the still of the evening you drive thru the battlefield you can almost hear the sounds of war. The pain and suffering for a cause can be felt. Ashokan Farewell is so perfect to represent this wonderful place..Home sweet home

  • My Great x 3 Grandfather, Jonathan R. Merrill, was in Company I, 2nd New Hampshire Infantry, and fought in the Peach Orchard at Gettysburg as part of III Corps, Army of the Potomac. He lost his leg there, but lived until 1923.

  • Thank you for showing the beautiful and unique North Carolina monument :)

  • You're very welcome. The North Carolina monument is beautiful, as they all are. This monument does have a special meaning for me as I had family outside the Charlotte area in Matthews. Having vacationed down there several times and along the coast, the state has been a very fond holder of memories and family.

  • My family fought for Ohio and NC during the War, along with what became WVA. I had 8 ancestors at Gettysburg, 6 of which made the charge with the 47th NC and 5th NC. Gettysburg and the NC monument bring tears every time I visit. I am a 24 year old civil war re-enactor with the 5th NC and currently serving as an Officer in the U.S. Army, stationed at Ft. Bragg. Gettysburg is home away from home!

  • I really like this guitar rendition of "Dixie." I have been to Gettysburg many times. It is a poignant place, but I was saddened by the encroachment of the city upon the battlefield-- indeed, there is a KFC at the base of Cemetery Hill, an incredibly important feature of the field. If you liked Gettysburg, I would encourage you to visit the Antietam battlefield in Sharpsburg, Maryland. It is a quieter place (but no less powerful) and so lends itself much better to personal reflection.

  • My parents are going to visit Antietam this summer, I wish I was going too. But eventually I'll get there as well. THank you for your comment.

  • Antietam? In one of my Civil War references I read recently that historians now know that there were at least eight women on the Antietam Battlefield that day, disguised as men. Beautiful tribute to these brave souls, T.Y. NYLady!

  • Thalia: OMG! i cried. :')

Melopomene: c? dis is mu kindah video. Thx nylady 13601. not much uh deez.

Caliope: we should do something like dis...

    Thalia: Totally. sniff sniff

  • Tears and a big thank you. dont know what else to say.God Bless the Republic.

  • This is absolutely Beautiful, the music the words of the letter from a soldier. Image, how they felt so far away from home and family. Thank you for taking the time to put this together, it touches the heart and soul .

  • I was at Gettysburg only once. It was a memorable visit to the past. Your video and music takes me back to that sad heroic place and to the memory of the who perished for our country.

Your efforts are appreciated by all of us who see this.

  • I am an extreme CW buff and Gettysburg is my favorite site of all. I feel so heartdrawn to that place, it is strange. I have been there many, many times and can't get enough. I have often wondered if there is a reason for my deep feelings about it. When I am there I can feel the spirits from the ground.

Your video is so great and I love Ashokan Farewell; its perfect. Thank you so much for doing this.

  • Very moving. Superb video. Your colour pictures are stunning. Wonderful

  • It's a very good song, stupid question though, was Ashokan a person?

  • Ashokan Farewell was written in 1982 by Jay Ungar, performed by him and his wife & partner, Molly Mason. Ashokan is their music & dance camp in the Catskill Mountains near Ashokan, NY.

  • Jay Ungar wrote Ashokan Farewell while in a "melancholy mood over the passing of another summer of fond memories at their camp, Ashokan.

  • Wonderful video. Great pictures and music. They go wonderfully together! This is definetly worth comemoration. Thank you.

On a side note where did you get these tracks?

    Private

    Second Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry

  • Glad you enjoyed my video. It means a lot to me that all the work to make this is being appreciated.

The music is from the Original Soundtrack Recording: The Civil War, from the Ken Burns documentary.

  • beautiful...

  • NYLADY13601

  • WOW, I feel very honored that you think so highly of my video. It was a lot of work and very time consuming to put together. THANK YOU for appreciating this piece.

  • This is a great wonderful tribute for all those men, women and even animals who fought, fight and died for their own and others homeland and for the peace on every single place of this world.Thank you NyLady for showing us this vid so we may never forget the gruwelty's of war.

  • Thank you for your kind words about my video. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

  • i grabbed my violin and i havent played for like 1 year and a half and i played 3 fourths of the song and i forgot the rest. But wehnever i listen to this song my eyes water and i evently start to cry =.D

  • If only mankind could live in peace as well as it can make music !

  • Maybe someday it will happen, perhaps not in our lifetime, but some day. Thanks for the comment!
