Yes - restenosis - that is, the recurrence of stenosis (narrowing of the artery) can occur. Ideas such as using drug eluting balloon catheters are currently being trialed. These stents (proven better than bare metal stents and drug eluting stents) have been shown to give a lower rate of restenosis, and involve the release of anti-proliferating drugs such as Paclitaxel.
The only thing is.. I've heard that even after you push the plaque build up against the lumen, it may open up for a while but the plaque/blockage can come back.

Which is why a stent would be placed to hold the vessel open.

Well I have heard that still with the Stent their might be higher chance that plaque insert the Stent and grow.
