    Morrissey is a goblin.

  • it always sounds to me like morrissey says 'fuck knows i'm ready' rather than 'god knows i'm ready'. is it?

  • The first song I ever heard by The Smiths, and the song I fell in love with.

  • fantastic riff on "what she said"

  • did not know them, so far I saw a video on TV, and I'm a collector and a little music, a concept that good music very good, I would call a single group, the voice of the singer and well-crafted music , the truth is I lost it in the 80's but never too late to know, up the good music, I blew his brains wao this group, Greetings

  • Wow, Johnny Marr would absolutely destroy Slash, easily a top ten guitarist, you can't teach creativity

  • how I dearly wish I was there!

  • One of the very few bands that sounds better live than in studio.

  • euagghhhhhh . this gives me a reason to live

  • Best Brit-pop group EVER! American groups were clueless during this time - and I'm an American!

  • My favourite track on the album. The way Rubber Ring is blended at the end is spin chilling. <3

  • 2 things...this video is validation that Johnny Marr is God-like and confirmation that Mike Joyce was a fantastic drummer

  • @be3825 Agreed, when I first listened to Rank I was amazed by just how much of his extraordinary talent doesn't come through on their studio albums.

  • Brilliant!!!

  • glad I listened to this song previous to any stray cat's one.

  • best riffage my marr, bass is shit hot and drumming is amazing

  • @ThisCharmingBhoy Yer, but he's a tit.

  • more important than the beatles......

  • @chrisdavid4026 no need to compare thx--both good! LoveUGodBless, T and J KABBALAH MATTHEWSHEPARD MADONNALICIOUS

  • I consider the song one of the smiths greatest achievements! a trully wounderfull live song.

  • Awesome!! Had the Rank album for years and always wondered how mad Moz would be when singing this one!!

  • @learue8 why compare? Thx! Both Good! LoveUGodBless T and J KABBALAH MATTHEWSHEPARD MADONNALICIOUS

  • Name one band better than The Smiths. That is the challenge!

  • morrissey's voice is one of the best things to ever happen to music.

  • "what she said" is considered by many as one of the greatest songs wrriten by the smiths. the song was beautifully written in there hayday. morrissey noted that this was one of his favorite songs

  • @606grain

    In where heyday?

  • This has to be one of the best medleys ever!

  • Wonderful.

  • any fucker who dont like the smiths is a cunt in my books lol

  • The greatest band the UK has ever produced, the greatest lyricist the UK has ever pruduced.............The Smiths!!!!!!!

  • The ending is so epic its untrue! I love the Smiths lol

  • Pretty good drummer too.

  • Rubber Ring? I think you have it mislabeled.. The SMITHS!!!! THE BEST FUC*KING BAND EVER!!!

  • @deadplanet22 The intro is Rubber Ring.

  • @deadplanet22 Then why didnt you recognize the intro and outro?

    Shame on you!

  • In Holland The Smiths were the greatest band ever seen !

  • amazing quality! Morrissey/Marr is the equivalent of Lennon/McCarty for my already forgotten generation, "i smoke because. i'm hoping for an early death. and i need to cling to something!"

  • @texaho Those lyrics are ejcted straight out of Elizabeths Smart's novel - "By Grand Central Station I Sat Down And Wept"

  • i think i have a new favorite :)

  • i prefer all the live ones, rank is such a great album

  • WOW! this footage is unreal! i remember when The Smiths played Washington DC it think in 88 (date i cant remember) but Moz was pulled into the crowd shutting the show down afer only 20 minutes of play. That totally blew - but man what a great 20 minutes! lol The Smiths forver.

  • That was in 86.

    They split up in 87.

  • @johnnyalonso1 it could not have been in 1988. the smiths broke up in the summr of 1987. had to be the queen is dead tour in 1986

  • Maravillosa cancion, excelente Mike Joyce, que regrese THE SMITHS

  • What I love about such Smiths live footage is that it shows how utterly unconventional Moz was on stage. He looks like he's just stumbled up there and is jumping around like he would in his bedroom as an old 45rpm plays.

  • Great observation! That were hysterically accurate, in my opinion! Like,"Michigan J. Frog!" LOL : P.s. Thank God he stumbled upon someones stage, or else? Oh, what am I getting at? Can't imagine life w/out Morrissey, Marr, Joyce, and Rourke! - J

  • A prova máxima que a banda era du carai!

Marr e Mike são musicos fuderosos! E Morrissey é único!!!

  • This, for me, is the most exciting affirmation of life that I have ever heard. I have been listening to it since I was twenty years old and it still does it for me.

  • @310396 wow, still ill

  • this song, it justifies smoking for its likely consequence, love it!

  • Mike Joyce really kicked ass LIVE on his drums!!!

Rourkey & Joyce deserves plenty of credits!!

  • "What she said, 'I smoke because I'm hoping for an early death, and I need to cling to something'"

    Brilliant lyric

  • @danhardwick77 That's me, man!

  • @danhardwick77 Stolen virtually verbatim from Elizabeth Smart's prose-poetry.

  • @danhardwick77 fantastic lyric.

  • 'What she said, was sad, but then all the rejection she's had"

    Fucking ace lyric.

  • The Greatest Band That Ever Was

  • LOVE IT!!!!!!! One of my favourite ever Smiths songs. Thankyou!

  • This just sums up perfectly why i love the Smiths. Perfect. Get goosebumps just listening to this; elizabeth smart's tragic life turned into 3.55 of pure music bliss. Somehow manages to better the studio version and the rubber ring ending is just genius.

  • great song :D

  • MICK JOYCE IS DRUMMING IS THE BEST EVER

  • Yeah. And Craig Gannon kicks ass too. They were critical to the live shows in 86.

  • to pretend to be happy would only be idiocy

  • ITS SO FUCKING GOOOOOODD!!!!

  • Full volume - the most exciting music that I have ever heard.

  • outstanding! would love to be able to get this on dvd. five stars!

  • Johnny's intro is total bad-ass in this--then he kicks it into shreadfest.

    So jealous of the skills.

  • The drums! Can't overlook the drums!!They're a huge part of this one-

    Signed,

    Mike Joyce

    (not really, but still....)

  • quiet literally poetry in motion

  • Love Johnny Marr riffs, shit Santana boring solos.

  • You're right. At least Marr's ''solo's'' you can follow.

For me he's the definitive guitarist.

  • tenpole tudor

  • I agree

  • Where did you get the video footage of this from please, mate?

    And thanks very much.

  • This version of this song is what got me into the Smiths! Thanks a lot for posting and giving me the visual to the sound.

  • I agree the addition of gannon added emmensely to the group by having larger sound and greater power in the guitar section. the music just sounded much better. its been well documneted that marr was usually the lead, but relinquished some of that to gannon when he joined the band. ofcourse after gannon was fired marr returned to the forefront.

  • This is such an AMAZING version of this song. Thank you!!!!

  • Fucking PRICELESS

  • who's playing lead?

  • Johnny is playing the lead on this one which is unusual as he is known for hating lead work. Craig Gannon is playing rhythm. The Smiths sounded sooo much better with two guitars they should have done it way sooner.

  • You have GOT to be kidding. The smiths were always better as a 4 piece. With Rourke on bass, who needs a rhythm guitar?

And Johnny didn't hate "lead" persay, he hated playing traditional solos, but he still played plenty of what some people would call solos, like the breaks in bigmouth or shoplifters.

  • Easy now, and no I'm not kidding. I hear you Andy rules, killer bass work on all fronts. The bass line in "Headmaster Ritual" is gold. I just found going from listening to the albums and then watching the live stuff there is so much guitar work missing.

  • Ok, ok... I hear you. Personally, I like the seat of your pants feel of the instrumental 3 piece, much in the same way I prefer Nirvana shows without pat smear.

Although I guess I can admit, on some smiths songs the 4 piece could be a stronger sound.

  • Fair enough. It is interesting to see what Johnny does to compensate in the guitar department, and I would agree on the NIrvana as well, they were better as a three piece, nice and raw

  • kick ass song, just perfect

  • Oi Morrissey. I want my hat back. Why doe he go MWAAAAAA ! at the start?

  • Frog in thr throat, or just cos he can, who knows - boot nose.
