My uncle fought in Narva. All I know is that he was a Norwegian volunteer officer in the Waffen SS and barely made it home. Today he's gone, and I with him died his stories. I feel pretty down about never getting to hear them.

Germany and Japan both lacked the necessary natural resources to win their respective parts of WWII. From day one victory was unlikely. By 1944 it was impossible. Lots of death for nothing.
As for the fight against communism. Stalinist Russia and Nazi Germany were two colors of the same evil paint. Don`t think of fascism and Stalinism as opposite poles on a line. More like a point on a circle where both extremes meet. Both evil, both we are happy to have buried and gone.

If you talk about efficiency then what about ST Petersburg? The city was surrounded by Germans for almost for three years and the could not take it. But they tried really hard. Germany was the country that for that time controlled the whole Europe but they could not take ONE CITY. Respect to both the Russians and the Germans.. The Eastern front was pure chaos - the Russians lost something like 9 million troops - thats not even including civilians (Communism did a good enough job there I think). The Germans had better training but thier chain of supply was no good by then, air superiority was lost but they still managed to use thier Grenadiers very well, knocking out tank after tank.. The sheer numbers and determination of the Russians won out though.

@DrArku It was the Waffen SS Division Nordland and Nederland covering the retreat of the Estonian Legion (which lost the line and retreated). The Nordland and Nederland were succesfully beating off Russian attacks South of Narwa while the Estonians couldn t hold their line.
Waffen SS Division Nederland lost a full regimant because of that Estonian retreat.

At Narwa russky lost over 11 divisions. Troops were removed because of D-day and after that the breakthrough from southern part of Estonia which made it pointless to stay there and become surrounded.

If you talk about efficiency then what about ST Petersburg? The city was surrounded by Germans for almost for three years and the could not take it. But they tried really hard. Germany was the country that for that time controlled the whole Europe but they could not take ONE CITY. Even if they took Moscow there would be still 2/3 of the Russian land that would fight to the end.

Certainly volunteer legions were formed & the nations were sapped of strength but there is MUCH they could have done.. German snobbery toward Slavs (though not as profound as everyone seems to think) cost them dearly regarding the Ukrainians - a large reserve of men there.. Japans actions were rather foolish in retrospect.

Respect to both the Russians and the Germans.. The Eastern front was pure chaos - the Russians lost something like 9 million troops - thats not even including civilians (Communism did a good enough job there I think). The Germans had better training but thier chain of supply was no good by then, air superiority was lost but they still managed to use thier Grenadiers very well, knocking out tank after tank.. The sheer numbers and determination of the Russians won out though.

What many do not comprehend is the fact of how foreign countries fought with Germany against communism knowing the fate that waits them. Was German occupation as terrible as traditional history wants us to believe or were they more friendier? Reality is the Red Army were cruel and barbaric; during the war and after. These countries along with German were fighting for their survival.

In the long term as a result of WWII, Russia lost the most in lives and way of life. They were practically slaves after the war thanks to their government as were the conquered countries. Germany and Japan became 2 and 3 Economic powers because of the war

The situation was vastly more complex than that. However the lend-lease program was a cornerstone without which the Soviet Union would not have survived. The weapons supplied by the west was not the most important aid, it was the canned food, raw materials, 375000 trucks and rare chemical compounds to make explosives and ammunition. Without all this soviet manpower was nothing but cannon fodder.

Even though i read the comments written by many here, i can't still help but laugh, at how everyone says that the German armed forces were incompetent and they didn't do that, and etc.
The battle of Narwa was one of the most tactically ingenious. A small German (with the help of voulonteers from Estonia, norway, denmark) held back a sizable force of 11 Divisions.
My grandfather (as was my grand-uncle) were both in the Estonian Waffen SS, and i have a funny feeling that they wouldn't lie to me

@Nebelwerfer89 Estonian Legion hold the russians back to get more time for civilians to evacuate, not for Germans to retreat. From the military point of view it didn't matter if Estonians stayed behind or not. This sacrifice was made to save civilians from russian gulags.

@DrArku It was the Waffen SS Division Nordland and Nederland covering the retreat of the Estonian Legion (which lost the line and retreated). The Nordland and Nederland were succesfully beating off Russian attacks South of Narwa while the Estonians couldn t hold their line.
Waffen SS Division Nederland lost a full regimant because of that Estonian retreat.

At Narwa russky lost over 11 divisions. Troops were removed because of D-day and after that the breakthrough from southern part of Estonia which made it pointless to stay there and become surrounded.
