My mom was from Scotland--Ross and Cromarty (sp?) to be specific, and I have a strange kind of nostalgia for Scotland without having seen it! Based on the way she was, it was a gentler land than the US, and one where people walked everywhere they could--at least in her time, which was the 1940s.
