"Then I saw thousands of millions crying for this man... and then I heard them mentioning my name and leaving me the blame." That line has always been so moving to me. What a haunting song.
This entire movie taught me more about Jesus (NOT "Christianity") than I ever learned in church or at home or at "Bible Camp"( however, while there I did see the "Aroura Borealis" and thought it was God and who knows?? I was a bit stoned at the time) My folks took me to the movie and Mom bought the double album am I played it over and over with enormous headphones on and memorized the entire thing! I was 13. It was exactly what I needed - a loving, caring, passionate and righteous friend.
This song moves me everytime, especially when he says "thousands of millions, crying for this man..." Funny, because Pilot's wife supposedly had the dream, but it's still referenced for this movie...
The depiction of Pontius Pilate having a dream and being able to recall these specific details is not consistent with the Bible (KJV). His wife, who was thought to be named Claudia based on the Second Epistle to Timothy 4:21: "Eubulus, Pudens, Linus and Claudia send their greetings, and so all the other Christians," had the dream. In Matthew 27:19 she says, "Have nothing to do with that innocent man, because in a dream last night, I suffered much on account of him." Great musical though.
@moralviolation - I know it and I always wondered why they didn't just have a female sing this song, but on the other hand, Barry Dennen did an excellent job with it, so maybe that's why they changed it.
There are two other versions of the christ story that are comparable, in my eyes.. Jesus of Nazareth (very long, but extremely well done), and The Greatest Story Ever Told.
probably the most dramatic performances in this rock movie. In fact, apart from the actor who plays Jesus, I found this actor to be the most ...memorable.
His name is Barry Dennen. I don't know why his movie career never really took off after this. He had also appeared in a smaller role in Fiddler on the Roof (movie version) where he played Mendel. Dennen was Barbra Streisand's first BF and he had a huge part in launching her career in 1960/61.
Int he Adam West "Batman" tv series, Barry Dennen played a Mexican who spoke with a cockney accent in the episode featuring Shame. Dennen also appears in "Kentucky Fried Movie," and, believe it or not, he was once Barbara Streisand's significant other.
Of all the Pilates to appear in all the various movies about Jesus, this one is by far my favorite, though David Bowie in 'The Last Temptation of Christ' is a close second.
I love Dennen's portrayal of Pilate and actually like this movie. So much great acting from everyone involved. However, it was Pilate's wife that had the dream, not Pilate.
Very pretty melody. My favorite in JCS too. So many in this GREAT Musical though ... Try singing "Could We Start Again Please" when kids are going to sleep ... I get weepy every time (not religious, but a good melody does it for me) The words don't quite fit for kids maybe ... but the melodies are lovely ... really good stuff and my favorite ever musical
Actually, in the Bible, it's Pilate's wife that has the dream. But what's cool about this number--"leaving me the blame." We sure do...every Sunday we say the Nicene Creed--"He was crucified under Pontius Pilate." That is what that the song is referring to.
@Losaru I agree. I heard the original 1970 release I'm not sur if was Barry Dennen too, but in movie soundtrack he made an excellent work...especially when he spells the last line..."and leaving me the blame..."
I love the ghostly voice in the background that whispers, "Pilate," at the end. It adds a very symbolic note to it because people do hold Pilate to blame for what happened without stopping to think for a moment that it was all part of Jesus' destiny. I agree with everyone who said Pilate as a man was weak, because he was nothing but a puppet in God's grand scheme of things. I love this Pilate though - no one can out-do Barry Dennon
@kamakaleialoha pilate WAS weak, he had no stones, and was to afraid to go against the madding crowd because he knew he'd suffer the same fate as Jesus
Okay... i love this movie and the songs. But theres one thing that does take away from it.
Why... The fuck... Do the Romans have pink wifebeaters and salad bowl hats with some camo pants held up with a modern belt and carrying crossbows. I guess the style came from Emperor Trajansexual
The musical wasn't classical. It was deliberately put in our time to make it more recognisable. There are tanks, automatic rifles, fighter jets seen in it as well.
@chrissybeany good point Chrissy! I think many people take this film to be accurate however, the film is not at all historically accurate, but it is a great musical nonetheless.
@centurionsquad hi thank you for your comment, actually many historians and people hold the the stories of Genghis Khan to be accurate, even though we have stories written about him from over 500 years or so (these stories are considered accurate).
The Gospels however were written less than 90 years after the death of Jesus, some were written within 3-5 years after His death, eye witnesses were still living who would verify the material.
Actually 60-70% of the new testament was written by Paul 60 years after Jesus' death, and even that script has been redacted and edited so many times. Theologians cannot even agree on the proper text of the various versions of the Bible out there. You have to agree that it takes faith to believe in a book that is a collection of works that have been edited over 2000+ years. Scientifically speaking, eye witnesses to verify something is a little weak.
I agree it takes faith to believe in the bible, but blind faith is of no use. It also takes knowledge, facts and much more. Otherwise, why not just believe in a flying spaghetti monster? Actually in the archeologist did not think that Pontius Pilate even existed until "Pilates stone" was found by Dr Frova.
The fact is that there are over 66 books written at different times speaking about one person Jesus is Christ. Some writers did not even look at other books of the Holy Bible ...
Probably the historical Pilate was a superstituous man and, as such, he had his wife's dream in mind when he tried to save Jesus. Or maybe he was impressed when a beaten and tormented Jesus, instead of cursing, literally exonerated him of almost all responsibility (that is in some Gospel). That, and the hate he saw in the mob towards Jesus, maybe explains his sympathy for his prisoner...
