  • this guys slight of hand is awful. i saw every single move

  • @michaelcurtis91 same...

i didnt see all, but i saw most

  • @michaelcurtis91 Well once you have a good idea about slight of hand you can pick up every move. It was the same for me btw

  • THIS GUYS SAYS A LOTTT OF BALLSHIT... good tricks tho

  • Hax

  • how did you do that?

  • None the less my favorite cups and balls routine

  • I laugh when people don't know how this works, but he performs it wonderfully.

  • confused just between 1:25 and 1:55... damn he's good

  • @drummerrboy Watch his his right hand placing two balls in the cup witch allows him to make the move twice

  • Is he using chop cups?

  • @pittkid42 Yes. He used only one chop cup for this trick.

  • @pittkid42 No Well chop cups no. Possibly a chop cup is involved but all 3 are not chopped.

  • cool nie mehr schuften bin so reich

  • mind = blown

  • Dear sweet Gods of magic . . . I thank you and Ricky Jay.

  • @HighDefinition339 he´s got 4 balls

  • Effortless. Truly a master of his craft.

  • This whole routine is meant to be entertaining and allow Ricky to display his sleight of hand skills. Sure, you can rewind the video and watch everything slowly and know where he loads a ball, where he simulates putting it, etc... But the whole point is to have a good time and allow a master magician to do his job, which is to entertain you. Don't laugh it off, just admire his skills and his showmanship.

  • I am reminded of an old apropos dialog overheard after an astounding illusion:

"Daddy, I wonder how he did that."

"Well, son, first he took the...."

"NO! Daddy, don't tell me. I want to WONDER!"

That is what magic is all about, and Jay does an amazing job of making us wonder. Bravo! :-)

  • @HighDefinition339 A chop cup and some very good sleight of hand.

  • @chris241289 sure, pal. you got me. you clearly WAY out class me. You can't even use the internet to figure out a 3000 year old magic trick, but you are still smarter than me... hold on, I'll stop typing and look at google to see how long it takes me to find the answer.... HAHAHA!!! there are like 50 pages talking about this exact routine. Strange,NONE of them seem to mention glue! He did it by normal means, master genius. Wow, you beat me so bad I can't even tell how. Nice trick, douche.

  • Comment removed

  • @chris241289 lol What EVER gave you the idea that owe you an answer? Who the hell are you? I don't owe you a thing you hollow-headed simpleton. You don't care what every magician in the world would tell you, ie: no gimmicks, than ok. Be stupid, be wrong, these are your rights. But don't think that right includes others validating your delusions. You like to embarrass yourself here on youtube by making retarded claims to understanding you don't possess then have fun. Master magician! lulz

  • @no2religions you're both trolls, get over it

  • @chris241289 oh.. and for better competition for you, you might want to try the ICU or some kind of special education facility.

  • @chris241289 So did you just decline my offer of competition? Figured as much. I don't have to know or care in order for you to be wrong. It's not my trick. Ask Ricky Jay, but if you suggest he is using gimmick cups he is more likely to laugh at you or spit in your face than to explain to you.

  • Comment removed

  • EVERYONE SHUT UP AND ENJOY THE MAGIC

  • Just look at him cup those balls. Such gusto.

  • Comment removed

  • @chris241289 hehe.. sorry man, the trick just isn't done that way. He's really, really good, that's why you can't see it. But I don't think anyone ever uses glue or tape.

Imagine that he is palming it at 1:29. See him loading it under another cup a second later. As for when they are all stacked, he could very well be knocking the balls off the top of the cup so they fall behind and only look like they are under the cup when he lifts it. It's not called a slight of hand for nothing :)

  • Comment removed

  • @chris241289 "This is the most stupid explanation I heard for this trick." Then you are the stupid one. putting a ball behind the cup is a standard move in this trick. You are a retard that hasn't figured anything out.

  • Comment removed

  • @CompareAndDecide Arrogant how? People can believe what they want yes but when it comes to exposing magic be they right or wrong in the idea they have of how it works. They have no right to do so in public. Everyone that does such a thing feels it makes them seem wonderful to everyone else in the world. It doesn't of course. It actually makes them look very poorly educated as well as other things.

  • Even though Penn and Teller revealed the trick, I still can't see how Jay does it.

  • The thing about Ricky Jay is the final motion of the trick. Take this one, for example. The cups and balls routine is all doable, and with enough skill you could probably do it better. But the game-ender is when he tips the cups over the last time, and the plum, lime, and potato roll out.

  • @AnInnocentBystander9

Have you ever seen Gazzo's version?

  • @killazerg1

No, i haven't. Where can i find it?

  • and what is the differance between regular cups and balls and the chop cup one? please respond thanks

  • if he sold a dvd i'd buy it in a heartbeat and shit myself

  • @xBSpartan22x He did

  • @shenkeey where can i get it?

  • @xBSpartan22x Well this video is from a part of a film called Ricky Jay and His 52 Assistants, maybe you can order it on his website? :)

  • guy is a legend, one of the best performances ever displayed in magic. Ricky Jay will be and always will be the greatest slight of hand performers ever.

  • how the hell did he make the 2:19 ball dissapear at 2:24!?

  • Watch @ .40 to .45 closely. His left hand is most likely covering/cupping 1-2 balls inside, as he puts the china bowl down. His card tricks are harder to figure out, than the cups and balls tricks.

  • htf did he get the veggies in there!?

  • the alpombman

  • Its fun to analyze how he does the tricks

  • Story telling is such an underrated talent in any profession, so many magicians hardly say a word. Love ricky jay!

  • It's not tape or glue, it's called a chop cup.

  • @TheAplombMan I've seen your video of doing the three cups and balls, I really liked it!

  • smooth

  • Watch the Penn and teller reveal the cup and ball trick!!

  • The only obvious thing is the placement of the balls in the candlestick and the bowls. The rest is awesome, and the last reveal is truly outstanding. Very nice performance in his dialog. Truly an entertaining and amazing performance.

  • I don't want to know how he does it, it's just cool.

  • @ 2:19 he places the cup on top of the ball and makes it appear as if the ball on top drops down, notice when he covers the ball on top and then lifts it up to show that the top ball drops down he lifts the cup gently some sort of glue is holding the ball Idk maybe Lol. And notice how @ 2:29 he was about to cover the top ball but then he takes the middle cup and drops it with force on the table maybe to make to ball drop from the glue that's holding it. This guy is awesome xD

  • @alexhalo11 Nope not even close to the how or what Ricky is doing and using

  • @RS1963 Yes I am c:

  • @alexhalo11 Again you are not. You have no idea how any magic effect works. Be it something that uses a gaff or is pure skill or both.

  • @RS1963 Yes I am c:

  • @alexhalo11 If you believe that the cups and balls uses glue you're worse than a moron. Tell you what go to a magic shop and buy a set of cups and balls. Then you will have a very basic idea of how the effect works.

  • @alexhalo11 The point is this conversation was over before it even started. I will not engage in a war of wits with an unarmed being. Now go away.

  • @RS1963 Seriously get a life.

  • @alexhalo11 First off the letter C is not a word. Two you have no idea how any magic effect works even though you assume that you do. You don't even know the meaning of the word Illusion. Even if you did know something about magic you have no right to try and expose another magicians work. Regardless that you're not even close to the correct methodology.

  • @RS1963 I don't know why you're trying to argue with me just because I stated some of the cups and balls tricks he did. After watching this, I watched some other videos to see how it's done and I was right. And if you think i'm not even close, then watch the video and look closely and you'll see it and if you still don't see it then you're stupid. And so what if i'm exposing it? How do you think he learned it? And so many videos on Youtube exposing magic tricks i'm not the only one.

  • @alexhalo11 Also if you're learning magic off of youtube videos. Most of the tutorials done on magic here suck. The ones teaching have no clue to what they are doing. The only thing you are going to do by learning magic off of you tube is make yourself into another magician that needs to give up and get another hobby. Leave the magic to the ones that respect the art and know what they are doing.

  • @RS1963 Lol I never said I was learning magic off of Youtube to become a magician moron, i'm not into magic stupid seriously get a life don't try to argue with me, and I said MAYBE the cups have some sort of tape or glue to hold the ball I didn't say they do, I don't know, everything has a logical explanation. You probably think I don't like Ricky Jay because I exposed some of his cups and balls tricks, I think he is a good magician and best story teller while he's doing his tricks. Get a life.

  • @RS1963 And not only those who merely respect the art, but also those who have the discipline to spend the time to practice to attain the highest degree of proficiency and skill. I've been doing sleight of hand for about 9 and a half years now and I can tell you (and others who are interested in magic) that practice produces results incapable of being reproduced through any other means, even when one employs gimmicks. Practice is invaluable. Sadly, many don't spend any practice at all, or time.

  • @alexhalo11 honestly just watch the penn and teller version

  • @philipviele I did it's cool.

  • Lol cool @ 0:36 notice when he mentions the bowls of china he's holding the 2 balls that's on the bowl in his left hand holding it with his left hand fingers and puts them down gently to not show the balls, and @ 0:46 when he mentions the cups of Europe he flips the cups and the top cup has the 3 balls in it and he places it down not to fast and not to slow. And @ 2:15 he's holding another ball in his right hand and then places it inside the cup, he makes it appear as if the top ball drops down.

  • This is cool illusion notice how @ 3:37 he lifts the first cup a little because he doesn't want the ball to show, he is actually using 4 balls for that trick, the first cup already had a ball in it now the second cup he lifts it even higher to put the ball inside, and then the next cup it's so cool xD and when he says 3 gone and yet 3 returned, he still has the fourth one in his right hand and @ 4:24 he puts the fourth ball in the first cup, Lol he's quick if not the ball would have fallen.

  • 18 people lost their clothes and houses.

  • man this guy is good there was only one slight that i caught when he put a ball in his pocket i saw it transfer to the other hand but i still didn't know where it ended up!

  • 4:40 4:51 5:27 = 3 of the best feints iv ever seen. How this guy can tell his story whilst doing the obvious trick WHILST preparing his final trick is just masterful

  • I could listen to Ricky Jay's voice all day.

  • got it all until the last bit..

  • I saw he was doing a third of the time and how they got there, but the end.... No clue

  • his patter and his ability to hold the attention of the audience is spectacular.....its very hard to hve someone glued to there chair while you do magic but he does it....i am an aspiring magician and by far he is one of the best i have seen

  • the best performance i ever saw! i'm speachless...just awesome!

  • fucking awsome

  • 998 people shat their pants

  • don't mean to sound like an idiot, but they are his favorits cups because they are heavy

  • Comment removed

  • this amazes me

  • that last one freaked me out

  • everybody is saying that that they no how to do his tricks, but i dont think that anyone really does.

  • Of course this guy is awesome, He was woke during the global blackout on October 6, He's Flosso and he's the villain.

  • What is that P word he uses to describe the cheap tin cups? Can somebody tell? I know we got some smart people on the Tube.

  • @h20DDs he says penetrable.

  • @h20DDs penetrable...

  • Illusionists like him is why I think people believe in myths like Christ, Osiris, Horus, Thor, Odin etc. A good illusionist with a lot of charisma could easily call himself a prophet and get people to follow him.

  • Chris241289 you obviously don't no them or you wouldn't say!

  • @AmberAndMolly1 Actually I do know the secrets but I will not reveal them because I like doing magic tricks myself and I would certainly be bothered too if someone else would spoil the illusion I created or learned from others. So why would I destroy the beauty of this trick by revealing the secrets?

  • @chris241289 cuz u dont know en mofucka!

  • Comment removed

  • I know the secrets to everything he did in this trick. But I will not tell them.

  • that was intense

  • magic is theater drama and old fashioned street hustle and anything done well there is as much art in science as science in art.

  • thats real life hacks.

  • love how he allways tells a story when he does hes tricks

  • Funny how every detail of this trick was actually historical facts about the cups and balls, yet the audience was laughing as if he was making this stuff up.

  • great routine done very well i am a magician myself and learing cups and balls i would love to one day get to that point it is an amazing peace of magic and my personal favorite cups and balls the oldest trick in the world done very well what a trick

  • great routine done very well i am a magician myself and learing cups and balls i would love to one day get to that point it is an amazing peace of magic and my personal favorite cups and balls the oldest trick in the world done very well

  • great routine done very well i am a magician myself and learing cups and balls i would love to one day get to that point it is an amazing peace of magic and my personal favorite

  • How does he do that?????????????????

  • Whatthefuck?? That crap is impossible

  • what was the phrase that he said? something about infernal spirits?

  • he is a god and i will start worshiping him

  • ummm...

  • A true genius showman, pure entertainment. Love this guy!

  • Okay to all of you bragging about how you know how the trick is done, stfu! Okay, great, you know how the trick is done! No one gives a flying fuck! You want to really prove you know how? Do the trick the EXACT same way Mr. Jay does it, and then maybe people will listen. But until then, watch the goddamn magic. I sure as hell can't perform this trick, and I'm fine with it! We watch videos like this so we can be entertained, not read smartass comments made by posers.

  • @TheKeysersoze95 I voted UP to your comment because I feel the EXACT SAME WAY. I, like you, HATE and DESPISE people who make comments exposing the secret and ruining the illusion for everyone who reads their comments. If you know how it's done, fine. Prove it by making your own video. Otherwise, keep it to yourself. If I know how a trick is done, i'll say so, but out of respect to the performer in the video, I won't reveal anything.

  • That was a real joy to watch. Absolute perfection. I must watch that again....

  • How the fuck does he do that....

  • It's beautiful!!

  • Best show of magic in years. Ricky is the master.

  • Absolutely beautiful version. A master of misdirection, a master storyteller. The cups and balls is often done so fast - it's a delight to see this happen so effectively at such a gentle, languid pace. A master at work.

  • fucking awesome!

  • Brilliant performance. Ive seen lots of versions of the cups and balls, this one combines a lot of variations in one routine. I wish I was as smooth with the cups and balls as he is.

  • Truly a master at his craft! This routine probably took him years to perfect ,,,,,,,and that is what it is..... PERFECT!!

  • it is normal taht i learn at the same second as he do it, i've understanded 100% of his tricks.. i taught that i were bether that i saw,

  • No one is paying attention to his right hand which is holding the stick! That is where he has the extra so it's always closed....

  • one reasonable explanation we can all agree on: HE'S A WITCH

  • @lk0micho BURN THE WITCH!

  • I know how he does this.

  • One of the best performers in the world!

  • Absolutely brilliant.

  • I was fighting my self not to comment on some of the guys here but i just can't help it...

You stupid smart-asses...you idiotic now-it-alls!...Yeah,yeah...sure you all know how it is done but...CAN YOU DO IT THE WAY HE DOES IT?CAN YOU C-R-E-A-T-E such a BEAUTIFUL PERFORMANCE PIECE?Of course not...cause instead of practicing you all struggling to prove that you know the secrets...trying to scream to everyone that you too are magicians...and shit like that...I truly and honestly pity you...

  • @Perseas

well said Persias. ive been learning the cups and balls now for a few weeks and i am finding the hardest part is to come up with my own story or a way to make it my own, quite difficult, i think this is my favorite so far.

what i dont get is if you do know why would you want to post it all over youtube, surley you would want to keep the secret, no?

  • @layz8oy

You mean the jerks that expose the secrets?

    Don't bother for them...

They will never be good performers...

    Keep the magic alive...

  • @layz8oy I hope you're enjoying your time with the Cups&Balls May I make a suggestion? Study as many routines as you can. Anytime you see a routine written up in a book or a book on the cups&balls get it and read it. Don't neglect the Vernon routine. Learn all you can on this effect. Spend time working on one routine you like it can be Vernon's the Charlie Miller impromptu routine Out of Classic Secrets of magic. just pick one and use it. Your own touches will come about.

  • @RS1963 I LOVE this comment because I believe it is THIS type of comment that YouTube was created for in the first place; a place where people can give advice on where to go and who to study from in order to become even better at their craft than they they are now, whether that craft be acting, sports, dancing, construction work, or even magic. BRAVO to you for trying to HELP! THUMBS UP!

  • @Perseas Good comment!!!! This is beautiful!

  • @Perseas Thumbs UP for me on this comment. I agree with it 100%!

  • @Perseas I honestly wish that there was no more ability to comment on any videos on youtube. Mainly because of the idiotic commentary and unnecessary exposure. I of course recognize the irony in my comment that there should be no commentary.

  • @Perseas

He makes it clear that he's an entertainer. He never mentions the word "magic". So I can respect that. It's the ones with the top-hats who does all that voodoo bullshit that deserves criticism.

  • @TheFacelessActivist

Really? You thing that magic is about top-hats and voodoo bullshit...god you have absolutely no idea haven't you?

  • @Perseas

No, "voodoo" is just a general term, like "hokus-pokus", or "mumbo-jumbo". I'm sorry, if I meant that this would be read by a tedious and condescending asshole who nitpicks the way foreigners speak English. I'd clarify.

I know "magic" is a scam conjured by con-artists. Just look at Harry Houdini, what more proof do you need? Magic, is humbug. I don't expect you to understand that phrase, it was made up by a magician, only those who have some idea would understand it.

  • @TheFacelessActivist

If you see magic as a scam you're just a sad kid...MAGIC IS AN ART!

And as for phrases like "tedious and condescending asshole" you 're just proving another great theory that all people grow balls behind a computer screen.

I didn't judge your English...i'm a foreigner too...i critisized your mistaken perception of magic.

i'm a working pro for the last 6 years my friend.

You should start respecting the art that lots of people over the years have put thought and love onto...

  • @Perseas

Oh, now I get it. You're an arrogant prick who tries to think your job makes any difference even though it doesn't. Well, if you really did know magic, you'd probably just whip out your wand and make me disappear, no? Also, this isn't exclusively behind computer screens, I went bowling with my cousin a while back. The lady who serviced us was acting a bit nosy, so I vandalized their pool table in objection. But no, it's not an art, it's a cheap trick based on dexterity.

  • @TheFacelessActivist

    Vandalized their pool table?wow...that's mucho...hahahahah

I'm out of here!I wish you open your eyes one day.

  • @Perseas

Yeah, make like your audience and disappear.

  • @TheFacelessActivist You have no idea what art is. Magic is an art form. You obviously haven't seen any very good magicians.

  • @RS1963

Maybe you should read up a bit on history. "Magic" as you call it, has been used by con-artists throughout history. Dating all the way back to one of the first, most famous "magicians": Jesus Christ. And what did his "magic" result in? Well, pretty much every war in the coming centuries were fought in his name, and so he became a universal enabler for historical atrocities. All because of his "magic"...

So, no, it's not as much of an art as it is a scam.

  • @TheFacelessActivist Actually you don't know much about magic history or the meanings of words within the English language. I am a historian of magic which you obviously know very little of.

  • @RS1963

Oh, you're an historian of magic? How meaningful, I'm sure you got a great job at the magic history factory that opened up the other day. I myself also met a few other prestigious guys like yourself: One was a philosopher of hairbrushes, and the other guy wrote biographies on poodles. Not to mention the juggler-biologist I ran into last week, the Nobel prize committee just won't leave him alone since his last journal. "Torches and Chainsaws: The spectacular killer."...

  • @TheFacelessActivist Your comment had something" itty "in it but it certainly wasn't wit.

  • @RS1963

    ...And that was?

You know, right now it feels like you're Ernest Borgnine telling Aletta Ocean that she's ugly...

  • @TheFacelessActivist Obviously you're an ignorant argument troll. I am not going to engage in a war of wits with an unarmed being. I should have realized there was no educating "Mr. I know everything there is to know about art and the world and I know exactly what every word in any language means"

  • @RS1963

You know, at least I had the common decency to be witty...

  • @Perseas Or maybe some people just like to discuss the methodology out of general interest? But no, because if that were that case that would make your pompous and patronising post seem unreasonable...

  • @PuppetsNStuff

If any of you or these guys had any idea about magic you would know that discussing the methodology of magic in a public site like You Tube is above all immature, non respectful for the art and shows a complete lack of self-confidence...take care.

  • @Perseas Being a working magician, amongst other things, I know plenty about magic. There is NOTHING wrong with non-magicians discussing the potential methodologies used in a trick, the only time a problem arises is when a magician him/herself enters the discussion and spills the secrets. 6 years? Pah! That's nothing! You are a novice; a rank amateur, go back to Tarbell and learn; magic is a SCIENCE not an art.

  • @PuppetsNStuff

You're a working magician and you think that magi is a science and not an art?You gotta be a bad one...haha

As I said to the other guy...i'm out of here...

  • @Perseas I guess Ricky Jay is also a bad magician since he wrote in 'Cards As Weapons' of magic being a science? Or how about Dai Vernon, Penn & Teller, Derren Brow, Tarbell and Houdini who made similar claims about the SCIENCE of magic. Art is perception, science is constant.

  • @PuppetsNStuff Intead of reading just the first and last page a book, read the whole damn thing!

Jay, Vernon,Tarbel, and all the great have said that magic is above all an art and entertainment!

All of those have talked about the science of magic and not magic as science.only tarbell refered to magic as science in his 1st book but in the rest of the 8 he always said that magic is an ART!

  • Still here? I thought you were leaving? Instead of skim-reading a book to pick out small excerpts to substantiate your claims you should look at the context. The greats speak of "art" as the spectators' observation of magic and science as the way a magician uses magic. The magical artist will learn someone elses trick and adapt it to their own style. The magical scientist learns all the skills and invents his own tricks. Which one do you think the spectators will truly perceive as the "artist"?

  • @Perseas You, sir, are mad.

  • @Perseas I agree - bunch of Smart Asses pretending to know what all is going on in this trick . . A lot of folks seem to "think" they know the fundamentals. "Palm,Misdirection,Ditch, etc" but most of the time, they really dont know exactly when it happens....?

There are plenty of Bad magicians out there, and even worse tricks - but to take such an old and known trick, and recreate it on your own - And Make it Great, is true talent. I hate wanna be Critics on the Subject...

  • @Perseas I love it when a person knocks the ball out of the park, as you did! I to am a magician and love the way this fantastic story teller weaves the most excellent monolouge through a great performance of the cups and balls. The silliness of those trying to point out where the loads happen or how it is done MISS THE POINT. This is entertainment at its finest, a great perfomance, wonderful commentary, a great ending. Do not waste your time telling me how it is done, I know, I perform it !

  • @Perseas Yes, there are a lot of bratty children posting comments it seems.

  • @Perseas Well said good sir! <3

  • @Perseas Well said.

  • @Perseas and to complete what you are saying...this is not a hard routine...is based on simple moves but they are verry verry clever put toghether making it o genius and beatiful routine!!!We thank you Ricky Jay for existing

  • Me: God i would like to report a bug!

God: Ok what is it this time?

Me: Ricky Jay Is hacking and glitching and the Balls in the cups are jumping!

God: Stfu i made the earth perfect who are you to judge me!

  • chop cup combined with cups and balls

  • This man is amazing at sleight of hand, but, a master at misdirection

Ricky jay is truly the mater of magic, unlike criss angel, who, i bet couldn't figure this out, much less perform it
