  • bill pertwee (hodges) is probably the only 'keeper in history to stand up to trueman

  • i hope this video always remains - I also like the music whilst the game is playing.

  • Wow, Hodges is the new Sangakara except without a helmet... That guy's got balls!

  • Well done Godfrey ! (Arnold Ridley)

  • wow this video from 2006! old school youtube!

  • excellent

  • It seems Australia needed their Dad's Army; without them they've lost the Ashes.

  • Blimey - Warden Hodges standing up to Fiery Fred - get him in The Ashes side!

  • dads army beat up mummys bunch of sissys 5-0 :)

  • Brilliant...

  • 'I'll disguise myself as an alternative person"

What a classic line from old Clive!

  • Oh, just brilliant! I love Dad's Army, never tire of it. :-)

  • I know the song is English Country Garden, but can anyone tell me who does this version? Thanks.

  • it's actually "There'll Always Be an England" by Jack Payne and his Orchestra.

  • Well done Mainwaring's boys, batting second on what looks like a very bumpy track as well!

  • One question: why is Hodges standing up to the stumps against Trueman?!

  • Thats what I was thinking LOL.

  • And why didn't he stump Mainwaring when he was clearly stranded outside of the crease !! Questions that need to be addressed. Someone must be responsible.

  • He probably thought that as it was not mentioned in the script/story to carry out said act, it may go unnoticed, and with more than enough comedy being provided by current Engerland Cricket; about as pointless as the football team.

  • maybe mr hodges wanted to see mainwaring suffer more at the stumpd, it just seems like the kind of thing he would have done

  • hey its the 70's they were allowed to get away with those kind of error's

  • Reminds me of the war quite realistic.

I was asked to umpire at Woolwich and I wanted to go wrestling so stuck my finger in the air every slightest chance thinking they would never pick me again.

The next week they asked for me as I was so "fair" even for my own side to be out.

  • all joking apart, i have not seen this episode before but that ending is what we brits are brilliant at in sitcoms, i was expecting it to finish on an hilarious note but it depicts what it must have been like in that time period, like blackadder goes forth, that ending made me cry. but this is comedy gold

  • "like blackadder goes forth, that ending made me cry. but this is comedy gold"

Ditto for me on both. Brit comedy used quiet understatement in a way that is unknown where I live in the U.S., where audiences have to have their hand held.

When both Dad's Army and Black Adder did anything poignant, they didn't over-do it, wallow in it, or stand on a soap-box, or rub it in your face.

  • exatly i mean look at blackadder, it really would have been stupid if they ended it with edmund escaping the trenches, over the laughter these sitcoms emphasise the truth of what actually happen, there is a lot of realism in sitcoms like these, i'll tell you what if you like poignant sitcoms you have got to watch porridge with ronnie barker in it, the best sitcom i have ever seen, it's a prison sitcom, hysterical but very eye opening about prison life

  • Anybody know what the title of this episode was?

Benn trying to get it for ages, but never known the title.

    :P

  • same here

  • this is from the episode 'the test'

  • season 4 ep 10. 'the test'

  • lol godfrey getting a 6 LOL!

  • It's only a show - a good and gentle one at that.

  • look from the outset you are a baboon. seems to be the flavor of the month..especially if we're using an indian calendar. the fact is buster, people in all sports are sticking around longer. look at calzaghe from your part of the world. it's due to diet and lifestyle and economic wealth. get a grip on yourself, on modern culture and on demography..re film work..well i didn't watch it wasn't funny

  • that was the best match i have ever seen. i am not a fan of the sport. Its only a bit of fun a game.

  • "Easy one the first time, pin 'im t'sidescreen wi' second'n"

  • Australian

  • oh this is a classic, i'm a dad's army maniac, funny enough tho i was born in australia but my grandparents were english and so, my granddad was in the home guard so i can imagine how he felt

  • Interestingly Hodges says that he bowls at 95mph. Given that this clip pre-dates speed measuring devices, he was not that far out. And John3285, it's a fun piece; Humour doesn't always have to be at someone's expence.

  • On that first delivery from Fred Trueman, Hodges is standing ridiculously close to the stumps! :D

  • So what, were you trying to insult someone?, I don't get it! (I'm an aussie fan)

  • If I can borrow from Coporal Jones, They don't like it up em !!! Neither do the Poms.

  • Neither do the aussies!

  • p.s. ian botham is a d-bag

  • dads army

    you pommy wankers..

your team is getting destroyed by australias so called dads army

and its dads army that have done the most damage to the whinging pommy faggots

  • Oh dear. Just because your great great great great great great great Grandad got caught stealing a bread roll, there's no need to be insulting.

  • Homophobia, bigotry and poor grammar all in one post.

    You do your kinsmen proud.

  • HAHA win get the ashes after 3 test, GREAT entertainment ENGLAND!! WOOOOO

  • maybe u should have sent these ol boys! would have given the aussies a game!

  • Considering all expect 3 are dead and those 3 are in their eighties.. actually that WOULD have been interesting.

  • Well, Ian Lavender is 61, but still getting on a bit!

  • englands young bravehearts beaten by dads army! O dear! Wot happened?giving the ol boyz a chance were ya? Encouraging the criminals down under! Jolly good show!

  • HAHAHAHAHAHA Go the Aussies, who's laughing now....LOL

  • Yeah sucked in Pommy bastards!

  • the brits...

  • [Dad's Army wins]

ARP Warden Hodges: "you didn't really win, I should never have declared!"

Captain Mainwaring: "ah! but you did."

    sounds rather familiar eh wot?

  • ie: 2nd test, Adelaide, 1-5 Dec 2006

    * Hodges = Flintoff

    * Mainwaring = Ponting

    * E.C Egan [played by Fred Trueman] = Harmison

  • 2-0 with 3 tests to go. :)

  • Sign them up

  • Hahaha! - Great show old chap!
