And why didn't he stump Mainwaring when he was clearly stranded outside of the crease !! Questions that need to be addressed. Someone must be responsible.
He probably thought that as it was not mentioned in the script/story to carry out said act, it may go unnoticed, and with more than enough comedy being provided by current Engerland Cricket; about as pointless as the football team.
I was asked to umpire at Woolwich and I wanted to go wrestling so stuck my finger in the air every slightest chance thinking they would never pick me again.
The next week they asked for me as I was so "fair" even for my own side to be out.
all joking apart, i have not seen this episode before but that ending is what we brits are brilliant at in sitcoms, i was expecting it to finish on an hilarious note but it depicts what it must have been like in that time period, like blackadder goes forth, that ending made me cry. but this is comedy gold
"like blackadder goes forth, that ending made me cry. but this is comedy gold"
Ditto for me on both. Brit comedy used quiet understatement in a way that is unknown where I live in the U.S., where audiences have to have their hand held.
When both Dad's Army and Black Adder did anything poignant, they didn't over-do it, wallow in it, or stand on a soap-box, or rub it in your face.
exatly i mean look at blackadder, it really would have been stupid if they ended it with edmund escaping the trenches, over the laughter these sitcoms emphasise the truth of what actually happen, there is a lot of realism in sitcoms like these, i'll tell you what if you like poignant sitcoms you have got to watch porridge with ronnie barker in it, the best sitcom i have ever seen, it's a prison sitcom, hysterical but very eye opening about prison life
look from the outset you are a baboon. seems to be the flavor of the month..especially if we're using an indian calendar. the fact is buster, people in all sports are sticking around longer. look at calzaghe from your part of the world. it's due to diet and lifestyle and economic wealth. get a grip on yourself, on modern culture and on demography..re film work..well i didn't watch it wasn't funny
oh this is a classic, i'm a dad's army maniac, funny enough tho i was born in australia but my grandparents were english and so, my granddad was in the home guard so i can imagine how he felt
Interestingly Hodges says that he bowls at 95mph. Given that this clip pre-dates speed measuring devices, he was not that far out. And John3285, it's a fun piece; Humour doesn't always have to be at someone's expence.
englands young bravehearts beaten by dads army! O dear! Wot happened?giving the ol boyz a chance were ya? Encouraging the criminals down under! Jolly good show!
bill pertwee (hodges) is probably the only 'keeper in history to stand up to trueman

It seems Australia needed their Dad's Army; without them they've lost the Ashes.

maybe mr hodges wanted to see mainwaring suffer more at the stumpd, it just seems like the kind of thing he would have done

Reminds me of the war quite realistic.
