Funny how we view our childhood. My hopped up LT1 is superior in every way to my old 1978 Bumble Bee Z28 (before I dropped the 383 stroker in it.)
Yet is does not and cannot give me the feeling I had when behind the wheel of that Z. My friend is the same way. His hopped up LS1 would run circles around his old 1979 W72 T/A but he says it doesn't give him the same feeling.
And that W72 he had was no slouch. With virtually the same mods, I never beat it. High 13 was his best.
You could get a 400 with an auto. These cars were kings of the showroom in 1977. Could outrun any stock ford, chevy, or mopar in those days. I miss my 79 403 auto. It wasn't a 400, but after rejeting the carb, tossing the smog shit, and installing an aftermarket ignition, I could run with and even beat stock 5.0 mustangs.
@BigChief427 The L78 180hp pontiac 400 could be had with an auto but not the W72 pontiac 400 with 220hp.
Hell before I shoved a stroker 383 in it, I chucked the smog equipment on my 1978 Z28 350, put on a true dual with headers, recurved the distributor and tuned the Q Jet. I beat 5.0 Stangs and a Grand National (if they didn't pack their intercooler with dry ice like most of the magazines did when testing them.) I miss that old F Body, dude.
