My older brother was my hero and my best friend. He was planning to become a doctor and dropped out of college, enlisted and served in Viet Nam as a chopper medic.
He wrote often and described things that no one, especially teen age kids, should have to see.
He came home twice, once on leave and the next time in a coffin.
sad page of the american history, when soldiers came back at home, they've been insulted, what frekin shame.....probably that war was wrong, but you have to support your soldiers anyway...........G_D bless all those guys.....G_D bless AMERICA
Yeah me too....the part where he meets his family again and when his father takes him into the house and they have that quiet moment together....that for me was the most moving part of the film...I'll admit that it shredded me....and still does!
Oh man. Veterans hospitals are probably the worst in the whole nation. Veterans are not given the respect they deserve. Instead they're treated like expendable animals.
@juliabohemian Well they certainly are in Australia after an artical I read in the paper. A WWII vet who was past walking was attacked by a plague of mice and they ate at his ears and toes. If the home did their job it would never have happened. Your comment is so true.
@km4n87 He was definitely my second choice to win the Oscar. If Daniel Day-Lewis got screwed by the Academy that year, I would have given it to Tom Cruise.
Tom Cruise ranks amongst one of the greatest method actors of all time; but I dislike Oliver Stone as a filmmaker. I personally think his films are too politically impulsive, lack artistic merit and drown within a swamp of liberal ideology. Tom Cruise however delivered one of the best performances of his carrier though.
The actor Corky Ford who played Washington was also in Platoon as the ill fated Manny. And the Doctor is none other than Actor MArk Moses who played the Green Lt. in Platoon
Ha! You're right, I didn't even notice. And of course Willem Dafoe plays Ronny's crippled post-war buddy and Tom Berenger plays the marine recruiter for the high school.
For those that wer there -god protect -as alwys got shit for seving their country and allies -am with you all the way !-seen it !-gus-god bless all that have been there !-and god help em !-as no one understands what they went through anyway -NOBODY !!!!!!!!!!!
yeah it pisses me off when people just focus on his belief and totally forget he's a great actor. i don't live in america so i can't understand all these political correctness on religion / belief. it's just nonsense to me. a person's belief should not harm the profession of his career, and i don't see any negative effect on Tom Cruise's belief to his acting.
Interesting that Ron needs his dad to help him transfer from the car (a 1966 Plymouth Valiant). I have been friends with a paraplegic for more than 20 years and during their rehab, they usually do enough exercise to lift themselves.
The Dept. of VA is still limited today by Bush's escapades over seas. The cut backs are real. Veterans are being denied honest mental health. When you have more veterans committing suicide in a month then soldier being killed on the front you know you have a problem.
This and Magnolia Cruise's best performances.

A savage film to watch. Utterly compelling. Stone is not afraid to show America to itself in a way that it will never forget.

A lot of vets probably went thru the same ordeal coming back home after the war...
