The reason the Geico Gecko EXISTS is because "Gecko" sounds like "Geico".

Okay, whoever thought of the Geico gecko must have been a freakin' genius, because he beats out the Taco Bell chihuahua a thousandfold for cuteness. As for effectiveness, I'd tie the gecko with the guy who does the Allstate commercials. He just looks so... sincere, you know?
