lots of memories hit this tune, especially being indian , luved this type of music.. but at that time was callled national front music.. i was stupid 2 know better. still luv it.
I never heard this song before and I am just amazed that how good UB40 was back then!!! I have only listened this song once and it is already in my top favorites. The beat and lyrics is just so ahead of its time. Big ups to UB40 one of the greatests band ever!!!
@ Thebettyboo ..... Ali Campbell hasnt been in UB40 for the passed 2 years, he left in 2008! I am going to see them tomoro, but know that its Robin (Ali's brother) who is singing instead of Ali. I cant belive u didnt know this!!!
Saw UB40 on Monday (25.10.2010) in Liverpool, they were fantastic. Not a massive fan but they've achieved so much for British Music. To think they wrote this song about the famine in Africa, 4 years before Band Aid!
those were the days young dumb and full of come , and stoned out of the head a bit like now :) met the band in cork city Ireland in the city hall a long time ago had a few splifs in the bar wat gr8 memories , wat a talented group still listen to them today and always will peace out . :):):)

Just listened to this tonight on the Radcliffe and Maconie show on Radio 2, some on please tell me where the fuck these last 30 years have gone? these dudes were the business back then, then they sold out and turned to shite, still awesome album, signing off.
Its been thirty years since signing off came out and its gone so quickly,i was only 16 then...i remember listening to it round my mates house,he had the album and a job and i had neither...but what i did have was the yellow dole card that was the same as the album cover telling you what day you should sign on ,i think it was either tues or thurs at dod st in poplar.I dont look back and think it was a good time coz it wasnt,it was shit gowing up in the 80s but we had the music thank god
@papayankee69 I first heard this on the John Peel show in January 1980. I was 19, earning shit money in a frankly shit job. The only thing that I looked forward to was the next bit of music. This hit me in the heart long before they had hits. They were brilliant until 1982 and then it was 1983 and they had kind of lost it, as far as originality and that spark goes.
@kirkwallboy This WAS a hit, and a big one. It reached no 4 early in 1980, just after you heard it on John Peel's show. Few acts can boast of a debut hit single to match this for quality.
I always thought UB40 would not appeal to the US market, but Red Red Wine and Can't Help Falling In Love topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. In the case of Red Red Wine, it was five years after it reached no 1 in the UK that it repeated the job in the USA.
i love videos like this, it's the same when you watch any band that wasn't about the way they dressed, the band and the crowd both make it look like it could've been filmed last year. just ordinary teenagers, and i mean that in the nicest way :)
White dudes and black dudes together playing some sweet reggae...I'd like the idea of it, even if the music hadn't turned out this well. It's just a bonus that this song kicks ass. I like this style better than their later synthesizer-based stuff...check out King as well, maybe their best song in my opinion.
Early 1990's, cute Morris 1000, UB40 blasting, driving up the coast for you to spear- and crayrfish, carefree, laughing, smiling, singing ourselves hoarse, steak, carrot and chilli sarmies eaten while sitting on the concrete stairs to the tiny country shop ... PRECIOUS memories. THANKS MY WONDERFUL WAW! xxx Thousands of km's apart but only geographically. Always in touch! Best friends then, 2nd best friends now, as it should be. Love to your dear lady and son. See you soon. Mom
a timeless classic and the name of the band said it all i would hope that out of this human waste of the present we get a decent band that can tell stories of today as UB40 did in 1979 and on
Shame the same group did not write songs when New Labour was in power....But i guess they would have sung the prasies of Blair and Brown...The two people to fuck this country up after Slagging off Maggie....Some Food for thought...more Migrants claiming....thanks....
How stupid can some people be..? This is a brilliantly written song, in the UK reggae style, with a message. UB40 made some great music. I've just listened to the track King, and it is a really beautiful piece of music.
after a while ub40 became a glorified lite cod reggae covers band with weak beats... but this is chronically cool as is the earth dies screaming... two great albums followed by a decade of dross... viva ub40 for t decency to split before they got even worse
I get what ppl are saying about them selling out & doing covers. I used to think the same way until I saw a documentary about them & how they give a large cut of the profits to the original artist. Basically they were sacrificing their credibility to get these guys back in the West Indies the financial rewards they deserved. Of course they probably did quite well out of it themselves but at least they had some philanthropic reasons for going commercial & didn't completely abandon their ideals.
Yeah, the first few years until 1982 were so life changing. I like your SO. They did have a few gems among the later tatters. Some were really good, almost reaching their best. But by then they were almost like a different band, with a spent energy and different needs, emerging into a different era between cover version fits and starts, into a second hand sunrise. A lost sunrise, really.
what are you on about? this song is amazing, you cant just say this song sucks and leave it at that, you obviously have no idea what this song is all about, and blatently fuckin far too ignorant to give a shit.. do some homework you complete spanner
@thekillasquirrel well, you can say whatever you want on here. it's an american free speech thingamee. If i was you, instead of succumbing, and getting all angry about it, you could, just, ignore it. You know, the guy that wrote "this sux" actually won because he made you get so upset that you started swearing and going on. The song is awesome man, just calm down, and let shit slide... Something to think about / Food for thought
There's nothing wrong with doing covers if you do them well, we all know UB40 are talented we can see here. Don't know why doing covers makes them bad? So what? At least they can play there instruments and can hold a live gig, covers are a complement to the original artist anyway.

being 18 in 1980 was simply the best time, music was live; clean and lyrics were meaningful; and didn't it seem like it was always summertime.. loved it; and love this group still :-)))
I love UB40 so much, ever since I was little :) I found an old tape in my drawer a few months ago, and it brought me back to listening to them. Whenever Im feelin down I just play a good feel-good tune from UB and the blues just melt away! Its incredible how their music, old AND new, is almost completely ignored by the radio; it's sad. I dont know how things will go over in Labour of Love IV w/o ALI, but Ive got faith that it will still be amazing :D And good luck to ALI also
Great music. The lyrics are simply awesome, and straight to the point. I first heard this song when it was released about 30 years ago, but it's only in recent years that I've understood what it is about.
0114owl, I couldnt agree more... 98% of new music is soleless.. idiots who cant sing or write just put on stage as they look good...... A bunch of self taught Brummies world famous as they had Tallent...........
ya alla Love ub40 reminds me my aunt - when I was 13 - she used to put the records of ub40 & terence trent d'arby and many more great artists...that song bring me back to that period - I have the ub40 cd - with that song, red red wine & 1 in 10 - love it - great music.......jasmine - Israel
yes yes go on my selectah with the original betamax rip!! either its betamax or a very old vhs played over bad head's.... but yeah they sounding like that when they were pissed and high on coke too ;) ..., gwaan birminghams very own talent!
Played this one countless times. Always made me feel good and sad at the same time.

The musical intro is now sung by Birmingham City football fans!!.
