Again, there are three human bodies and one microphone. She was trying to make sure that her voice was projecting in the microphone. If you have ever sung in a trio with one microphone, then you would understand positioning.
Exactly!...it just bothers me because i remember when i was in a male singing group. I was not the lead singer...but I remember looking at the others every now and again..just out of plain chemistry and if someone was just sounding so good helping me flow with the harmonies...id look at them with a smile.

The Andrews, in my opinion, sang the best, no matter how old, or how long they had been performing, because they really didn't have to try that hard to sing, it just came as easy as speaking for them.
IT'S NOT A MATTER OF WHO SANG BEST. THEY BOTH HAVE TWO DISTINCT STYLES. THE SUPREMES WERE A YOUNGER GROUP AND MORE ENERGETIC THEN THE ANDREW SISTER'S WHO WERE OLDER AND MORE SETTLED IN THEIR PERFORMANCE.
who care who was trying to outdo who all that matters is that they were all perfect together...i loved it its a one of a kind right here...thank you StuartLou!!
ITS PEOPLE LIKE YOU WHO MAKE FRIENDS LOOK LIKE THEY ARE ENEMIES. NO ONE WAS TRYING TO OUT DO ANYONE ELSE. AND IF SHE WAS, THEN THAT IS WHAT BEING A LEADER IS ALL ABOUT. GETTING YOUR POINT ACROSS. DIANA WAS AND REMAINED THE ALL TRUE LEAD SINGER OF THE GROUP.
Also, I would like to add; that The Supremes "Changed" an ENTIRE GENERATION!!! In 1959 when the Supremes formed;"Negroes" weren't even considered "Citizens"(They couldn't stay at White Hotels or eat at White Restaurants etc.)And "very few" Blacks were allowed on Television. The Supremes changed that and "Kicked" down Doors for other Black People in Entertainment. A Jewish woman once told Mary Wilson of the Supremes: I don't let my children watch Negroes on T.V.- except for the Supremes..."
Dude this was a great moment in music. I mean it was about 20 years difference between the two groups? Or maybe more. I love music and I am adding this to my favorites. This is music history. They both were amazing.
Well, The Andrews Sisters, as I previously stated, were not at the Prime of Life, nor the pinnacle of their careers in 1965- which why ONLY a MORON would dare compare them with The Supremes! Its REALLY No Contest; The Supremes were in their Prime, while the Andrews Sisters were about 15 years past theirs... They hadn't had a Hit since 1948! And Yes the Andrews Girls DID Ham It UP singing their rendition of the Supremes songs-But was there ANY other way for them to play it? Even though they DID keep a straight face during "Stop! In the Name of Love" but it went downhill from there... PLus Rock-n-Roll was still in its infancy; being ten years old in 1965-NO ADULT TOOK IT SERIOUS!
@zodiolestes - Actually, the Andrews Sisters last #1 hit was in 1950, not 1948 (they had NINE #1s in all). In all, they had just under 50 top 10 hits during their almost 20 year career.
@mkrobinson95 Thanx for the correction! I'll have to brush up on my "Hit Parade" knowledge. But it was MUCH Easier for The Andrews Sisters because they REALLY had NO COMPETTITION in the 1940s with their Movie contract(1940-1947) and all. (The Boswell Sisters came alot earlier, around 1930 and The McGuire Sisters were ushered in during the advent of Rock-n-Roll in the mid-1950s.) I'm just responding to an interview with Maxine:" By 1948, everything seemed to catch up with us at once!"...
@zodiolestes - For competition, are you only comparing them to other female *groups*? They weren't in competition with groups only ... there were many popular female singers during that time ... Betty Hutton, Marion Hutton, Doris Day, Judy Garland, Peggy Lee, Dinah Shore, Jo Stafford, Rosemary Clooney, Helen O'Connell, Vera Lynn, Margaret Whiting, Kay Starr, Deanna Durbin, Helen Forrest, Kate Smith, Frances Langford, Jane Powell ... to name a few!
@mkrobinson95 Oh my, yes, I was referring to Groups! Yes, I am familiar with all of those Nostalgic Names from the Golden Era of Jazz. But you DID Leave out IMPORTANT TRAILBLAZERS such as Ella Fitzgerald, Lena Horne, Ethel Waters, Valaida Snow, and THE GREAT BILLIE HOLIDAY! But since my Forte is in Rock-n-Roll/ R&B Music, AND WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THE SUPREMES? Lets stick to the subject at hand and lay off THE DINOSAUR MUSIC of the 1930s&1940s???
1st – This video is not only featuring the Supremes, but the Andrews Sisters as well. 2nd - I didn’t leave out anyone; I named several & said they were only a "few" of top performers from that era (which was the era of Big Band/Popular music, not Jazz necessarily as far as the names I mentioned, which were to compare to the Andrews Sisters "competition" during that time). 3rd - I am commenting here as a guest same as you - please don't dictate what I can talk about - you didn't post this video.
They ALL sound Good. The Supremes sound good, as Flo is in the middle (clsoer to the mich) you can hear her a little more on certain parts & she is taking advantage of it too. U can tell those girls had rivalry for Flo did not let Mary in closer & she did not edge in c;loser; yet Diana did a little when she was too far away at certain times, & that's when Flo got purposely louder. If Diana would do that & took the middle, then she would be called a BITCH BY BLACK FOLKS. HMMM, BUT Flo..u go girl
Oh, good damn grief!!!! Diana Ross was, is, and ALWAYS WILL BE THE TALENTED ONE OF THE SUPREMES!!!! Without her God given, natural-born talent, The Supremes would have gone NOWHERE!! The Supremes could not have done the Andrew Sister's harmonies without any two members of the Supremes it is 3 part harmony. What's the big deal about Florence Ballard? She was replaceable and that is why Cindy Birdsong took her place.
I think they all sound great--I think, vocally, the Supremes were way better than have ever been given credit for. I especially like the warmth in Mary's voice--it really blends Diana and Flos voices together nicely.
Diana looks ridiculous working overtime trying to outshine Flo, but you can tell she is desperate knowing that this time she can't. See how repeatedly keeps looking at Flo. But FLO looks regal and so dignified. This is the type of music that suited her voice to a T. This is FLO's moment sorry.
@kingnando I thought I was the only one who noticed her trying to outshine Flo... it is so silly because all of them bought something special to the group. You could clearly see Diana struggling to outsing Flo when they did Bier Mir Bist Du Shoen
Diana wasn't trying to outshine Flo. She was trying to make sure that her voice was projecting in the microphone. If you have ever sung in a trio with one microphone, then you would understand positioning. And what is wrong with a little competition? It takes place in any group, whether it be music or three friends trying to outshine each other. It is natural. Diana is the tops and still is. Accept it! You have no other choice.
Remember, at this time, Diana had led the group into stardom having already recorded a string of hits, so I don't know what you are talking about. Florence Ballard was dysfunctional and Diana wasn't trying to compete with that. She had already won and that is why she was the lead singer of the group.
I'm THE Andrews fan...however, my favorite part is that the microphone picked up Florence's voice so well. What a great voice Flo had. Many thanks for posting!
Maybe a Kennedy Center Honors producer gets this original film and incorporates it in a Supremes award segment... I know they gave the award to Diana Ross, but I think the legacy of her Supremes hits has been ignored, no?
okay so it appears that the big Supreme voice here WAS Florence! I Love Diana's voice mind you but the lead voice on these songs was Flo! They sound AWESOME!
