I was born in Coventry, UK in 1973 and grew up in the Warwickshire countryside. The climate was unsuitable for surfing and in any case we were at the furthest point from any coastline in the UK. Moreover most of the UK coastline is unsuitable for surfing, and I was born 20 or more years to late to take advantage of the California surfing boom. Was raised in the 60's when this song came out and was VERY popular. Now, I have raised my son (a Marine in his 20's) on this, and other songs, by the Beach Boys.

The organ solo essentially takes the major triad, goes to a flatted 7th (blues 7th), then a second inversion 4 chord, and then the triad. Brian Wilson used this configuration in several other of his early surf and hot rod hits.

To simplify, if you were in the chord of C, it would be CEG, C G Bb, C F A and C E G. Just try it on the keyboards. I cal it cascading thirds.

I lived in rural Ohio (Amish Country mind you) and encountered more open minded people. The California you speak of exists south of Sacramento. Up here you either have money or you don't.
