@Xeper1979 This is fairly common. People confuse what is audible with what is written. The contributor tried to express their thoughts with what they thought would be amusing if it were spoken. Remember that some concepts are not easily translated from what is heard and what is written. It is likely that the contributor lacks the vocabulary needed to express their thoughts in an adequate manner.
@Xeper1979 Thank you for clearing that up for me. Now that I think of it, I believe your contribution was rather amusing after all. Keep up the good work!
This was a worst-case scenario folks. The primary lead-out wire broke loose and started to arc with everything it came in contact with, eating up hardware and wiring. The fuses could not protect from this kind of event and so the heat started to build in the transformer. The mineral oil's pressure built up inside the transformer to where the blowout plug at the top of the vessel let go, making the big cloud and fireball. The bang was the main lead-in fuse letting go when the transformer died.
This was an oil transformer which looked like the controlling DC voltage failed which isused on the transformer temperature, the oil pressure, etc, and more importantly the the DC voltage feeding the SPAJ relay. If the DC was present, there would be a number of protective measures that would prevented this by tripping the circuit breaker
@TheFsb2009 ur an idiot...of course it's the oil that's burning what do you think ignited the oil???? huh????? big smart guy? ...........(electricity) lol lame...
@Acedog8 not really an idiot, the transformer was switched badly and that caused the ignition in the first place, the real explosion though after the cloud of co2 to kill the fire also isn't caused by the electricity, it's caused by the already existing fire that was not properly killed. and that reignited the oil inside.
umm seiffer641....I don't know of any fire department that would put water anywhere near a transformer when it's faulting. All of the stuff that you saw that looked like water was the askarel or whatever they're using in xformers these days.
@seifer641 I doubt the fireman were even near this thing during the video. You're probably seeing the fire suppression system activated and the explosion is a transformer or another component exploding. If they were putting water on this you would see one hell of an arc over to them and their equipment exploding into a fireball long before hydrogen became an issue. The firemen are likely letting this burn out and waiting for confirmation from the utility that it's safe to get near it.
@protonevent The liquid you see is the oil from the transformer tanks - it isboiling hot and was ignited by the arc once released from the tanks. The shotgun blast sound is a cutout or fuse opening under the worst possible conditions.
@omairgeforce: I don't know if it's still necessary, but the fuse opening is another term for the fuse blowing: a fuse for that kind of power is a very thick one, made out of special materials to prevent it from exploding when the wires inside of it burn through due to an overcurrent: In thise case an extreme amount of power had to be cut of: when the wires finally burn the fuse opens with an enormous bang.
@omairgeforce Could very well be true. But I think that in this case the fuse was at extreme temparature when it finally cut the power, so when it blew, the housing just bursted, creating the bang.
But to be honest, this is something that probably doesn't fit an explanation ;) The conditions are so rare that you can't build equipment to it.
@SanAndreasWars lol no, when I was in high school my friend used to say it all the time. and it kind of just stuck haha. He might have gotten it from Myth Busters tho.
thats a little problem they wont have power for months!!! but why didnt the fuse blow and the oil when it lit thats the best eletrical fault that i have ever seen its brill!!!
what u got there is a exploding fuse but i don't get it was supposed to blow befor it got that bad hmm i think the power company is going to go affter the fuse manufactre for damages
hey fyi if u make a stupid comment on someone elses comment that is mor than a week old is ignorance and u show it. no body is going to remember what the hell they said a week ago have some yt manners for god sake sheesh mate
Should have called 811 for a locate. By the explosion, looks like it was a 3 phase primary that blew. Because only the oil cooled transformers could cause something like this.
Just sooooooo satisfying to watch, and when the oil finally reaches boiling point the result is superb. The women think that it's the end of the world........even more gratifying.
It wouldn't make a difference what method was used to generate the electricity - this was a transformer substation, not a generator plant. (The explosion would have been much more impressive!) Right at 0:14, you see a large burst of liquid, which is the oil inside the transformer which keeps it cool. Unfortunately, when it bursts out the side of a transformer in direct contact with a high voltage arc, it becomes flamethrower fuel!
oh, I was talking about the amount of power going through those things. If it wasnt such an insane amount, a failure would not have such catastrophic concsequences.
That, and they dont need to use flammable contents to cool the transformers.
Oil vaporizes at a higher temperature, conducts heat more efficiently, and far less conductive than water. Also, I'd like to think that somewhere, a group of engineers went "Well, we could use X, but Y would make for a frikkin AWESOME youtube video one day"
Icouldn't explain why but There was some sort of power station near a place i lived in Massachusetts that had a transformer explode for some reason and it created a fireball and a large electrical fire similar to that.
Wehee. I read an article on this one. I think it was a 133KV primary sub (correct me if I'm wrong). The fuse for the switch control circuit was popped and when the station went down to earth (fault) it couldn't disconnect, becoming the 'Arc Welder from Hell'. The jet of liquid is the boiling insulating oil vapourising and blowing out the breather, a moment later reaching flash point. Some things you'd pay to watch!
The Voltage rating in there is like 200kv or more. Also it could have been an oil filled transformer. Oil is actually a great electrical insulator for the wire windings and iron core of a power transformer. It also is a coolant to carry the heat away from the electrical transformer windings and iron core to the cooling radiators on the side of the oil filled transformer. The heat is created by the flow of electrical current through the wire windings that are used to make a power transformer.

according to me , when the over current is flowed by the fuse , in a fraction of seconds in boils and melt and then vapourises ,
Metal turn into ashes or fumes in fraction of second "thats what it makes boom"
