Looks like this was filmed at the end of a waterbreak (brise-lame in French and golfbreker in Dutch), typical of the Belgian coast along the North Sea.
Hmmm ... those were the days, both in musical terms and location; when Belgium and its people better invested their resources and inspiration. Great quality recording. Thanks much for sharing.
It looks like they're having a little fun with the producer, who probably doesn't even know which of these kids really plays which instrument. Squire and Kaye's "acting" isn't even all that convincing.
And THIS is the beginning of the best rock ever... PROG-rock! Where the Beatles wanted to go went Syd Barrett with his Pink Floyd. But THIS is going faaar beyond even his genious...
I wouldn't say the Beatles wanted to go this way...nor Syd. It's brilliant fucking music though. And certainly more was to come. Funny how Steve Howe is in the video, though.
Sorry, I was probably in rush (or drunk). No, the Beatles didn't try to 'go the progrock way', just to go beyond the simple pop and rock (adding choirs, orchestra, elements of Hindu music), but one of them (don't remember who) was supposed to say that Pink Floyd went "where they tried to go, but failed". In Syd's music (and lyrics) there are quite obvious references to the Beatles songs.
I really admire guys your age who 'get' progrock and Syd. We had so much more time back... in my time, and (as you know)you have to be really patient and listen a lot to get this wonderful music. All best.
well, for me it's pure pop (listen to this chorus!), and it could have been a standard with a slightly different production (and, i admit, without the superfluous keyboard solo).
Well... last I heard, Michael Jackson was considered being the 'king of pop', and that's... a bit different (it's called progressive rock) But I think your eloquent comment illuminated all of us. Generally, I don't care about all those labels but... sorry bro, I hate pretentious people.
Pop's not just Michael Jackson and Britney Spears, there can be intelligent, well crafted and sophisticated pop as well. The Beatles come to mind. And this.
I don't think Steve actually plays on this cut for this album. Peter Banks was the guitarist then. This video must've been made just after he split. Love Bill's drums here.
I don't know about you, but I backed into Yes' music. "The Yes Album" and "Fragile" were really the first things we were heavily exposed to here in this area of the Southeastern United States. I did my homework and went to the record store and special-ordered (that's right kids, you had to pay up front and wait about 30 to 45 days for the order to come in) the earlier L.P.'s....WOW! It blew me away! Like fishing in a quiet stream, you pull out a couple of whoppers! Thanks for posting...
I know what you mean.I had to order almost all of my lp's to.I once looked in the window of a dept. store as i walked by and there in the bargain bin was a genesis live lp! the first one.Had to beat up my buddy to get it first!Had to be around 1976
There´s an interview about this episode. They´ve decided to swap the instruments only to film this. At the time, the weather was freezing, and they got to roll the film as fast as possible. I´ve trying to get the entire "Belgium TV" film with excelent quality (the same as we saw in the YESYEARS documentary, that put bits of "Astral Traveller and No Opportunity.."). Great prog band of all time.
yeah its wierd: They had gotten rid of Peter Banks whoplayed the guitar in the recording. I think they switched Chris and Tony (with almost no closeups of Tony ) because they were thinking of getting rid of him (Tony) at this point and didn't want him too visible. When he did leave, 2 albums later,
Rick Wakeman replaced him. I don't think it was a pleasant leavetaking. from the YesYears video I think Jon wanted Banks and Kaye out, because they didn't fit his "vision" of what the band should be.
@Bluesmen88 You are correct, part of the reason Kaye left was the rest of the band wanted him to use synthesizers on Fragile (especially Heart of the Sunrise), and he was loyal to his Hammond organ, so Rick Wakeman came in and re-recorded some of Kaye's parts, (especially Heart of The Sunrise).
Well the switching was most likely just an "in-joke" that the band decided to play and nothing more. There are actually quite a few shots of Tony on bass in this video. Tony and Peter were the "rock stars" of the band, they would go out and get drunk and grab chicks while the others were more serious at the time. Banks and Kaye were not so much fired as they were replaced. Jon saw Steve play and they knew Rick from his studio work. Kaye has stated he had no problem playing synth back then.
Randy, as well as your favorite YES CD's, don't forget about Chris Squire's "Fish Out Of Water", which has been re-released in the UK/Europe with a DVD that has promo video of two of the songs from THAT one! Enjoy!
yeah, Stratman, that album is a PERFECT Progressive Rock accomplishment. From the writing, the combination of playing by Squire/Moraz/Bruford -- it really IS the best album Yes never made!
Don't worry about them. I prefer Genesis over Yes also, but I do love Yes' music. Genesis are better writers than musicians, whereas Yes are better musicians than writers. Just my opinion.
When Bill Bruford joined Genesis for their 1976 tour, they really wanted him to stick around for the long-term. Phil Collins and Bill Bruford were and still are big fans of each other's drumming. Chester Thompson did andd still is doing a great job.
Depends on who you listen to, Banks was either 'fired' or 'quit.' This was mainly over his dissatisfaction of the final mix of Time. Plus, the sessions were rather heated as him and producer Tony Colton didn't get on too well. Eddie Offord was only the sound engineer, moving to the co producer's seat for The Yes Album. Steve Howe soon joined in order for YES to continue promoting Time.
There is an old Melody Maker interview that discussed this. It was their way of making fun of the miming process altogether. They wanted to do new material they were working on too with Steve. So they lost and won in a a way.
They were just goofing. Chris & Tony aren't really even playing. Underneath the cool sweet vocals this song really cooks. This is a classic great Yessong
It is his Rick. Chris doesn't even own a Fender Tele bass. Closest he has is a Jazz that he uses on Astral Traveler video though in the studio he again, uses his trusty 'ol Rick.

From what I've read, Kaye was a very traditional organ player and didn't really want to go in the direction of synthesizers the band wanted to.
