Fortunately jokes like this sail right over the heads of little ones. Unfortunately some parents laughed like I did and some kids learned to repeat it with the same double-entendre tone. Sesame Street really should have quit while it was ahead - every adult in the room already knows what "gardener" means to a desperate housewife. ;)

Oh, come on. For kids, all it says is that plants need water and sun to grow. Parents can recognize the reference, appreciate it, and they might be more inclined to watch TV with their kids instead of leaving them alone with it. Sesame Street has always been like this---aimed to entertain kids without alienating adults.
