I think they put that in there to add realism but i like the maintenance theory.

Actually, after you started the second game, sometimes like 5 minutes after you got the lighting plasmid & get back to the pool, there's one (i think rosie) outside..

& after a big sister slices the glasses, you'll be outside too :D

thats not a easter egg big daddies were slaves to protect little sisters, they were made to fix leaks that made water come in before rapture got torn apart

Rosies and Bouncers are not mentally attached to the little sister as you said, only Big Daddies and the Alpha Series go into a coma (Or go insane) when not with a Little Sister

Look in the beginning of BioShock 1 when you're coming down in the Bathysphere. You can see a Big Daddy on a walkway doing maintenance.

Same in BioShock 2, you can see a Rosie using a reviet gun on a leaky wall.

In other words, you're right.
