I haven't read Christina's book, but based on what I've heard of it and seen of this movie..Joan does appear to have suffered from some kind of mental disorder- likely bipolar disorder. Unfortunately, in her era, there was nothing you could take or do to treat it. That might also explain her heavy drinking- she did it to mask the pain. Just a thought. I <3 her anyway- alot of her contemporaries had their problems too- I think Garbo was clinically depressed.
