They can learn tricks and be obedient, if they want to be. They are extremely loyal, which means that if you adopt one, it will still be loyal to its old family, not you.

Yes for everyone who says they are the dumbest dog....they are not. Personally I have 2 Afghans and one of the best dogs I have had and won't ever go back. Because they are .."self-made" ,aloof, and very independent. I bought an Afghan from a teen on the street years ago for $32. Really unusual-acting dog. I left it with a German Shepherd, in a factory bldg I had, and hit the road in a semi for a day. It broke down, and I was stuck for days. No-one could get in to feed them, and when I did, they got into a fight over the food. I never saw such a violent display. The Afghan was like liquid fury, and woulda killed the Shep in 20 secs if I hadn't got 'em apart! I truly believe no dog could've stood up to it!!!

If you read serious books about dog, you will find out that Afghan Hound are way more brighter than you may think. If you ask it to do something, it probably wont but, if you manage to get the dog to think he want to do it, it will... Btw, This dog Is Shiver from Sardula Afghan Breeder, he won lot of prizes. We know the owner, she has many beautiful one.

Beautiful dog, yes, but I can't imagine how hard/difficult it would be to keep the home clean considering how much fur that animal has. Seems like it would be everywhere. Plus, I don't think that breed should live in warm climates ... again, w/ all the fur, it would be inhumane to own it in hot/warm climates.
Afghans hardly shed at all. You want hair everywhere, get a lab or a retriever. They dump hair like you wouldn't believe!! As for the temperature... that's why they invented air conditioning. No dog should be left outside on a hot day. Hot temps are harder on dogs like pugs that have short noses and don't breath well.

Actually, the dumbest dog test was some idiot scientist putting a piece of kibble under a can, and seeing how long it took the various dogs to find it. All the scent hounds (OMG! FOOD!) and working dogs (OMG! A TASK!) did great, but the afghan said, "Kibble? You can't be serious. Filet... THEN I'll have the German Shepherd knock over the can and bring me the steak. Meanwhile, you can take your list and place it along with your head... up your bottom."

@Profingers13 no they're just aloof as in they don't train as willingly as other dogs and they are also very ancient so they weren't bred along with most dogs to be totally loyal and eager to please.. most sight hounds fall in the aloof category and also independent nature as opposed to waiting at your feet for a command.
Having an easy to train animal is great if That's what is needed and wanted. Dogs do Great work for us in So many ways, but an Af isn't for someone who wants Them to do what You say, but for enjoying what They are and what They do. Dumb, I Don't think so.. Beautiful And Entertaining, For Sure.. Loving All dogs and breeds to the max, they are at the Top of my list. Would be hard to own any others.. Maybe with a dozen Af's in the yard.

This commercial is soo cute!!!! and afghans are super beautiful. I have a 3 year old fawn-colored male. His name is Sticks. he is about 29 inches to the shoulders and weighs about 60 lbs. he loves to play in water and run and play. they are awesome dogs. and whoever says they are stupid like i have heard, is just plain stupid for calling this intelligent breed stupid

@QEeshen My "in-law" are breeding Afghan Hounds and they had some who were Obedience champions. If you read serious books about dog, you will find out that Afghan Hound are way more brighter than you may think. If you ask it to do something, it probably wont but, if you manage to get the dog to think he want to do it, it will... Btw, This dog Is Shiver from Sardula Afghan Breeder, he won lot of prizes. We know the owner, she has many beautiful one.

Beautiful dog, yes, but I can't imagine how hard/difficult it would be to keep the home clean considering how much fur that animal has. Seems like it would be everywhere. Plus, I don't think that breed should live in warm climates ... again, w/ all the fur, it would be inhumane to own it in hot/warm climates.

Afghans hardly shed at all. You want hair everywhere, get a lab or a retriever. They dump hair like you wouldn't believe!! As for the temperature... that's why they invented air conditioning. No dog should be left outside on a hot day. Hot temps are harder on dogs like pugs that have short noses and don't breath well.

(I wasn't speaking negative of the breed, just making an observation/comment ... I love all animals and have 2 dogs of my own ... the kind that do shed-Labs, but thanks to the Furminator it's manageable.)

Actually, the dumbest dog test was some idiot scientist putting a piece of kibble under a can, and seeing how long it took the various dogs to find it. All the scent hounds (OMG! FOOD!) and working dogs (OMG! A TASK!) did great, but the afghan said, "Kibble? You can't be serious. Filet... THEN I'll have the German Shepherd knock over the can and bring me the steak. Meanwhile, you can take your list and place it along with your head... up your bottom."

no actually they tested working intelligence and they tested how many repetitions it took for the dog to learn a command- the kibble thing is wrong and is not how they tested it
so, afghans are not necessarily stupid but just don't learn commands easily or don't have much desire to follow them

@Profingers13 no they're just aloof as in they don't train as willingly as other dogs and they are also very ancient so they weren't bred along with most dogs to be totally loyal and eager to please.. most sight hounds fall in the aloof category and also independent nature as opposed to waiting at your feet for a command.

Having an easy to train animal is great if That's what is needed and wanted. Dogs do Great work for us in So many ways, but an Af isn't for someone who wants Them to do what You say, but for enjoying what They are and what They do. Dumb, I Don't think so.. Beautiful And Entertaining, For Sure.. Loving All dogs and breeds to the max, they are at the Top of my list. Would be hard to own any others.. Maybe with a dozen Af's in the yard.
